The Vulpro@Shamwari breeding season is in full swing here at our rehabilitation centre. These Cape vultures unfortunately cannot be released back into the wild due to permanent injuries. However, they can still breed successfully and their offspring can be released into the wild, increasing the ever so dwindling vulture populations. This pair is making sure their nest is well packed to protect their precious egg once laid.

Meet our newest patient here at WRC. He is a little wood owl that came in all the way from George with the help from an animal welfare organisation. He was found grounded on the road, so we suspect he was possibly hit by a car. Upon admission he was showing signs of a concussion as well as sensitivity to his left wing. After a few days in the hospital with some TLC, he has recovered very well which means he graduates from intensive care and has been placed in a larger enclosure for a flight test and before we know it, he will be back in the wild where he belongs!

Then & Now

Our three buffalo babies are not so little anymore! The end of 2022 marked the successful release our buffalo orphans back into the wild! We check up on them every so often to see how they are doing and it is safe to say they are doing extremely well. Successfully well integrated into the wild herd, they are growing leaps and bounds. This makes all the hardships that come along with wildlife rehabilitation so worth it! Releasing our patients back into the wild where they belong is our ultimate goal here at WRC.

Hi! I am a Bushpig! My mom and I got separated soon after she gave birth to me. Luckily, I was picked up by some good people who brought me straight to rehab. One day when I'm big, I will be released again. My caretakers tell me that I am doing very well. They also say I am a bit overweight because I eat everything I see, but I don't believe them! I don't respond to any names, but the other day one of my caretakers called me Dumpling, and it made me very excited.

Antelope moms will leave their young in long grass or shrubs to go and feed for a few hours before returning to give their baby milk. We often find that good Samaritans think they are doing a good deed by picking up the helpless baby and bringing it to a rehab centre. Most of the time that baby is perfectly healthy and becomes quite difficult to handle. If possible we do try and return the baby to the exact place it was found but unfortunately the mothers do not come back once they realize their baby is missing. Here are few guidelines to help you make the decision whether to intervene. If you are unsure of what to do, it is always best to call your local wildlife rehabilitation centre.

The overwhelming Joy you experience when you see your patients impove!

Healthy food and high quality milk ensures our patients to be "better, faster, stronger".

Our feeding programs are designed on a case by case basis to model a hands-off feeding approach. Some patients take longer than others to adapt to a specific feeding method, that is why we take our time to ensure a good outcome.

Book yourself into Shamwari Private Game Reserve to come and visit us.
