Monkey Matters is an organization dedicated to helping the public resolve issues regarding conflicts between human and non-human primates. We will rescue any injured, orphaned or displaced SA primate. Those that are healthy, but cannot be released back to where they were found, will be sent to Riverside Wildlife, in Limpopo for rehabilitation. There are no reputable rehabilitation centers in the Eastern Cape for rehabilitation and troop-forming.

And he owns it 😁 his mom was caught in a snare and died πŸ˜” luckily he was saved and arrived a few days ago. He is an energizer bunny and has settled beautifully.
Please remember the sooner they are brought to us the better, holding on because they are cute can be very detrimental to any primate. It may seem like you are helping, but in fact, you are making things worse for them. All the changing hands and diet changes are no good, and they belong with their own kind. Monkeys are not babies and do not belong in nappies. Please do the right thing.

It is that time of year again, where babies and juveniles are injured or orphaned.
Please call us: injured primates, orphaned primates, or knowledge of primates being kept illegally as pets. πŸ’ Vervet monkeys & baboons are often hit by cars, attacked by dogs, or shot by humans. In this event, please call us so we can assist with attending to injured or orphaned primates.

Sad but true πŸ˜”πŸ’

"Don't you see, you took my home,
My forest, my trees, my place to roam,
Don't you see, you took my food,
My fruits, my leaves, my means to be good.

I have a family to provide for,
Kids to feed, a troop to lead,
But it's just you and your bullets,
Hurting me, my kids, taking my family, so brutally.

Why can't you be kind? Why can't you care?
By the roadside, that's where you left me to die, with no one to spare,
What did I do to deserve this fate?
Was it just for being a monkey, a primate, a creature to hate?

I didn't harm you, I didn't steal,
I just lived, breathed, and loved, like you, I feel,
But your bullets, they cut short my life,
Leaving my family, my kids, to struggle and strife.

Oh, the pain, the suffering, the fear,
You brought upon me, my family, my troop, year after year,
Can't you see, we're just like you,
Trying to survive, trying to make it through?

So I ask you, please, have a heart,
See us as living beings, not just a target to part,
We're vervet monkeys, just trying to live,
Not pests, not problems, just a family, trying to give."

Meet Never πŸ’™
He will NEVER be subject to confinement in horrible conditions, NEVER be captive by humans, and NEVER have to worry about his future or safety again.
He was confiscated by SAPS and SPCA Uitenhage after a raid on a property.
The "owner" said he was the only one who could handle him as he is very aggressive. Well, the "owner" is now in hospital after being attacked by NEVER.
As you can see in the clip, he is the softest, sweetest soul who just needs love and safety.
He is now safe and sound and enjoying his life πŸ’™πŸ’

When you visit people and see this, please report immediately to us, your nearest SPCA branch, or the police. This is illegal and cruel.

Wildlife should be allowed to live freely in their natural habitat, keeping them caged, or as pets can lead to various forms of injustice and harm. This can lead to physical and psychological suffering for the animals.

Caged wildlife often face cramped living conditions, inadequate diets, and lack of mental stimulation. They may develop behavioral issues such as aggression, depression, or self-harm due to the stress of confinement. Additionally, captive wildlife are at risk of being exploited for entertainment purposes, such as in a circus or zoo, where they may be subjected to cruel training methods or constant handling by humans.

Furthermore, the illegal wildlife trade and keeping exotic animals as pets contribute to the decline of endangered species and threaten biodiversity. Many wild animals are poached from their natural habitats or bred in captivity for profit, leading to population declines and ecological imbalances.

It is important to raise awareness about the injustice to wildlife when kept caged or as pets and to advocate for the protection of their natural habitats. Conservation efforts, responsible tourism practices, and ethical treatment of animals in captivity are essential steps towards ensuring the well-being and preservation of wildlife for future generations.

Monkey Matters has been caring and rescuing primates for more than 18 years and does not often ask for donations. We try to be as self-sufficient as possible but sometimes do need some help to achieve our goals. We have a fundraiser coming up, which will help raise funds for our busy time of year and request the help of our supporters. 🩷
We are also busy with some awesome initiatives, and every bit helps.
Please show your support and help us to continue to make a difference for our primates πŸ™πŸ’
Your support will be greatly appreciated ❀️

I really wish more authorities would adopt the same concept when it comes to protecting and saving our wildlife.

❀️ A Baboon Tale, with a Happy Ending!

Most of the news stories you will read about the Cape’s baboons tell a grim picture for the future of this enigmatic species, but the Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Department continues to help our troops in trouble.

Shot at, poisoned, attacked by dogs, hit by speeding cars; the types of baboon injuries that the SPCA documents monthly reads like the casualty list from a war zone.

One such recent incident involved an adult female baboon who appeared without her troop, lying on the rooftop of a home looking poorly. A wildlife officer was dispatched to go and assess her condition, and it was clear to him that she would need to be captured and admitted for further veterinary testing to find out what was wrong. She was barely moving, underweight, not able to keep up with the troop, and shaking visibly at every movement. Read the full story here: https://pulse.ly/6b70qmwyvg

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Department is equipped to respond to all cases of sick, injured or compromised wildlife, including baboons of all ages, 24-hours a day, every day of the year. Contact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA on 0217004158/9 or email [email protected] to report sick or injured birds.

Another beautiful soul robbed of freedom and a chance at life πŸ’”πŸ’
We were called about this boy and spent days planning his rescue and move to the rehab centre. The permit had reached the approval process, and all was ready to go, and he was set to join his own kind. Being quite far from us, we decided it best for the baboon to go straight to the centre instead of coming to us first.
We contacted Brendan Owl Rescue Centre who was happy to assist with the transport.
We were then informed a decision was taken to euthanize the boy, and this was done before any of us could react. Politics and outside interference played a role here, and we are not going to stand by and let this happen any longer. Conservation means to preserve and protect and this was definitely not done! So sorry we didn't save you, my boy, but we will make sure it doesn't happen again. πŸ’”

She was reported to be paralyzed and pulling herself along the ground. It was determined after a vet visit that she had somehow been electrocuted, and after trying our best she succumbed to her injuries. RIP little one.
