This is what it looks like when you surrender your dog to a shelter. This is from a dog who was dropped off to the shelter after being in a quiet home, with a bed, with a family. This is diarrhea from having an upset stomach. Have you ever been so anxious to the point where you get sick to your stomach? This is a 24/7 feeling for a dog who has been surrendered.

“Where is my family?”
“Why am I in a cage?”
“Why are all these dogs barking at me?”

Imagine one day you’re taken from your luxurious life and thrown in prison for no reason, never to see your family again.

Did you know 50% of dogs who are surrendered to a shelter don’t make it out? Pets are a lifelong commitment. Do not get an animal if you cannot financially, emotionally, or physically care for one.

Newsflash, there is no such thing as a perfect dog or cat. They are expensive and a lot of freaking work. The loyalty of an animal is unmatched. They would never do it to you, so don’t do it to them.

Juanita's Rescue

Let me introduce you to Juanita Marais. This lovely, unselfish lady works in the vicinity of Pretoria West, South Africa. She is retired and provides for numerous dogs and cats on her small SASSA (retirement grant). On a daily basis she feeds 21 dogs at 13 sites, does inspections, and clean cages.
The sites are mostly scrap yards owned by citizens from Northern African countries and are based in high risk areas. Over weekends she has someone that helps her with the feeding, inspections and cleaning of the cages and surrounding areas. During the week she is on her own. Currently she is also looking after 15 puppies. 2 of the pups' mom unfortunately died, 1 pup is healthy. However, the other one is currently at the vet on a drip and has Lyme disease. The other pups had to be taken away due to the dangerous circumstances and minimal chance of survival.

Over and above her looking after 21 animals she rescues on a daily basis under the most horrendous circumstances. She treats wounds where there is need, takes injured animals to the vet and is currently busy with a lawsuit where a dog was beaten to death. She ventures into dangerous situations where animals are being stoned and on numerous occasions were under attack herself. She will stop at nothing when it comes to the safety of an animal.

Needless to say, that the vet bill is in the red, there is a massive need for dog, puppy, cat, kitten food as well as blankets. Juanita cannot do this alone; she needs our support.

Updates to follow.

A six-year-old basset hound-Labrador retriever mix named Teddy was one of several comfort dogs deployed to the scene of the Surfside Condominium collapse from Crisis Response Canines. On Tuesday, Teddy was on his way back home in a private jet after he suddenly lost his ability to walk.

Teddy and his canine companions spent several hours a day comforting families who lost loved ones in the collapse and searching for human remains in the massive pile of rubble since the June 24 tragedy.

When Teddy’s story hit social media, an online campaign to fund the dog’s treatment raised more than $46,000 and included a private flight from a New Jersey based Titan Aviation Group out of Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday to Philadelphia where the dog is being treated.

Teddy’s owner, Sophia Barrett, believes her dog may have suffered a hip injury before arriving at Surfside and his condition became worse as he walked amid the rubble. According to the NYPost,

“It appears that he has a possible herniated disc, as well as a partial tear of his cranial crucial ligament in his knee,” Dr. Beth Hirschfeld, a veterinary acupuncturist reported.

Teddy is receiving laser therapy and acupuncture to relieve his symptoms along with other therapy.

It is not known if Teddy will be able to walk again, but his owner and his supporters are sending their love.

22/07/2021

A Florida woman who claimed to be a pet rescuer has been sentenced to jail time for allowing multiple cats to starve to death inside of her apartment. According to sources, 56-year-old Cheryn Smilen was sentenced to 364 days in jail, and 15 years of probation, and she is forbidden for owning or rescuing any more animals.

The sentence follows a grim discovery inside of Smilen’s South Florida apartment, where investigators found dead and dying cats inside of the unit. A Miami-Dade police detective said that there were, “dead cats over dead cats over dead cats.” The apartment had an air-conditioning unit, but it wasn’t being used, and investigators found plenty of cat food at the residence, but it was not given to the cats, who resorted to eating each other in an attempt to survive.

The 2018 discovery was made after neighbors reported a foul smell coming from her apartment. Some neighbors told the authorities that cats could be seen and heard crying and scratching at the windows trying to escape. According to the New York Post, Smilen was “well-known” in the rescue community as a woman who fed stray cats and took them in with the hopes of finding them “forever homes.”

At sentencing, the judge admonished Smilen, stating:

“It’s hard for me to believe how humans can be so cruel.”

Please share this handsome pair!!! Let us help Zane and Bingo find their forever, loving home!

A bonded pair of dogs, surrendered by the owner who said that they were “moving,” have been waiting for someone to take them in since April. On Tuesday, a social media post was made on behalf of the dogs, named Bingo and Zane:

UPDATE 7/20: No rescue or adoption holds. The shelter is over capacity. Let’s get them out!!
no one wants a large bonded pair…
they’ve sat in their kennel confused and alone for 7 weeks 💔
Bingo 47532438 is 3 years old, 74 pounds, neutered, and heartworm positive.
Zane 47532418 is 6 years old, 147 pounds, neutered, and heartworm negative.
Owner surrendered on 4/13 for ‘moving.’

With notes about their personalities:

I finally took these boys out in the yard this past weekend, once for pictures, and the next day to just let them run around. I fell in love!! Bingo is a big baby. When I had him on a leash, he leaned on me the entire time. Zane the GSD is huge. He could definitely lose some weight but he is so playful outside and tries to engage in play with Bingo. He can be intimidating in his kennel and with new people so breed experience would be best. Notes say he doesn’t like to be restrained but I had no issues leashing and unleashing him when a kennel tech was with me. I really worry about these two.
** They were dog tested and need to be the only other dogs in a home.

Not everyone can take in two, large breed dogs, especially when they need to go to a home with no other dogs. But there has to be someone out there that is in the right position to take them in. Sharing their information will help them find that one special person who can make a difference.

DO YOUR RESEARCH AND KNOW THE RESCUES YOU SUPPORT!

Fake rescue groups are a danger to the welfare of many abandoned animals. Sadly, there has been an upsurge in investigations of “self-proclaimed rescues.” These rescues are often charged with hoarding, unacceptable living conditions, neglect and even abuse.

The true tragedy for the animals who end up at these self-proclaimed rescues is they suffer more there than they did at the shelters or even living on the streets. And the other tragedy is the people who naively donate money and supplies to these fake rescues are unwittingly allowing the abuse and neglect to continue, believing the animals are in a loving, nurturing, healthy environment.

According to a news article in the Daily News:

“It remains a mystery how someone goes from trying to rescue animals to stockpiling them in inhumane conditions without food, water or basic care. No single trigger has been found, but dementia, addiction, attachment disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other psychological problems are often blamed.”

One Georgia rescue known as GARD (Georgia Animal Rescue and Defense Inc.) located in Pembroke, Georgia has been under scrutiny by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Inspector General.

According to an article written by Casey Anselm, GARD was founded and run by a woman named Joy Bohannon who was convicted on February 10, 2014, of seven New Jersey animal welfare violations including failing to remove excreta, failing to frequently clean animal enclosures, failing to observe animals for disease among multiple other charges.

Prior to the New Jersey charges. Bohannon was also found guilty in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on May 23, 2012, of dealing dogs as an out of state dealer and failure to have mandated health certificates for the animals.

There are also many complaints lodged by people who have adopted from GARD according to the Better Business Bureaus site where the rescue received only 2 out of 5 stars. There is one positive review at the top of the page followed by four negative reviews citing GARD as a scam that adopts out sickly animals.

Valerie Bass who adopted a dog from GARD in 2021 told her story to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Valerie lost her own dog, a 16-year-old toy poodle the previous November. She found a mini poodle at GARD and drove three hours to adopt the dog. When she arrived to pick up “Belle” she was shocked at the little dog’s condition.

“Belle smelled awful. Her fur and claws were matted with f***s. She had not been microchipped.”

Undeterred, Bass paid the $400 adoption fee, waited for microchipping and the following Monday, she took Belle to the veterinarian.

“Heartworm positive was the only thing that was supposed to be wrong with her,” Bass said. “But the vet diagnosed an ear infection, a permanent eye infection which requires daily cleaning and medication”

The vet told Bass the dog was closer to eight years old than four years old.”

“They lied,” Bass said. “I would still have adopted her even if I had known about her eye condition.”

An animal should never leave a rescue in worse condition than when it went in.

On August 11, 2020, several investigators from the Georgia Department of Agriculture went to inspect GARD and take photos of the animals and their living conditions. Photos taken by GDA inspector Joey Brooks can be viewed here .

Another person, Beth Miller took numerous photos of the living conditions as well during the August 11 inspections. Her photos can be viewed here.

More photos of the August 11 2020 inspection were published November 29, 2020. It is unknown who the photographer is, but it was one of the four inspectors who responded.

Apparently, GARD failed the August 11, 2020 inspection based on violations in several critical areas. Photos allegedly taken during the inspection show animals housed in stacked crates, some of which were partially or fully enclosed with sheets, and others housed in dirt pens and concrete kennels, some of which were filthy. Due to these conditions, the Georgia Department of Agriculture issued a stop order prohibiting GARD from acquiring more animals.

Then on February 1, 2021, Joy Bohannon’s good friend Vicky Crewe Buck was arrested on 74 counts of animal cruelty in Candler County Georgia. . Read the news story here.

Despite the stop order issued earlier by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, an unknown representative of that department advised Sheriff Miles from Candler County that it was okay to take the 74 dogs and cats from Vicky Crewe Buck’s property to GARD. There were three reputable organizations standing by to take the animals

Sheriff Miles claims he does not know who he spoke to at the Georgia Department of Agriculture to give the okay. Vicky refused to sign her animals over to Sheriff Miles but insisted they go to GARD.

Even People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s (PETA) got involved by writing a strongly worded letter on March 2, 2021, to Mark Murrah, Manager of the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Companion Animal/Equine section regarding concerns about the 74 animals being transferred to GARD when so many complaints have already been lodged against them. Despite all the complaints lodged and the photographic evidence a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Agriculture Julie McPeake told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“While the Companion Animal division does not have any open complaints against GARD, the Inspector General’s investigation of the rescue is ongoing with several steps to complete before the investigation is closed.”

According to a blog post, there is a personal lawsuit pending against Joy Bohannon and GARD by a woman named Fonda Bray. It was filed on December 9, 2020, in Bryan County Georgia under case number SUV2020000497. A pre-trial hearing date was scheduled for July 2021.

There isn’t any further details on that as of this posting.

When working with any rescue group, it is imperative to do some investigating and make inquiries. Ask to see their 501(c) 3 status paperwork from the IRS. They are mandated to furnish that paperwork to anyone who requests it. Also, ask to walk through the areas where the animals are kept. If the rescue refuses, then chances are they have something to hide.

Check with the county or city animal control and the local law enforcement agencies to see if there are any complaints against them. Also, ask what vet they use.

There are several social media sites dedicated to exposing fake rescues:

https://www.facebook.com/RescueAbuse/

https://www.facebook.com/GeorgiaAnimalRescueDefenceGARD

https://www.facebook.com/DogRescuesthebadandtheugly

https://www.facebook.com/InspectorBark

Fake rescues are a blight on the world of animal rescue and not only need to be thoroughly investigated but shut down completely, or countless animals are destined to suffer at the hands of these monsters who disguise themselves as someone dedicated to the welfare of animals.

True rescue groups will dedicate their time, resources, and their lives to saving animals, not exploiting them for their own personal greed or agenda.

A man from New Smyrna Beach was arrested on Tuesday and charged with felony animal cruelty after cell phone video showed the man kicking and dragging a malamute-mix puppy.

According to Click Orlando, Danny Brandner, 37, was captured on video outside of the Venetian Bay Apartments kicking, dragging, jerking the dog by his collar and leash and hitting the pup. The neighbor who recorded the disturbing incident was appalled by the man’s treatment of the puppy.

The puppy could be heard yelping in fright and pain during the two-minute video. The neighbor, who asked not to be identified, stated Brandner was a bigger man than him, and there was no way to know if the man had been carrying a gun.

When authorities arrived, Brandner denied hurting the dog and told authorities he had purchased the dog in May 2021 as an emotional support animal.

The puppy is currently in the care of the Southeast Volusia Humane Society. He is being examined by a veterinarian.

A crowded Texas animal shelter has put the life of a “calm, patient dog” at risk. The young, mixed breed dog, dubbed Harvey, has been waiting for someone to love him since June.

The Houston Save Lives is our Mission page reveals the lack of interest in Harvey:

A senior dog, 11 years of age, is one of 14 dogs who was abandoned this weekend outside of an animal shelter in Pasadena, Texas. Ironically, the Pasadena Animal Shelter has stated that the abandoned dog had been adopted from them 10 years ago…

On Monday evening, the animal welfare agency wrote:

This was one of the 14 dogs abandoned outside our shelter this weekend. In this senior’s case, the individual who dropped her off seemed to be *trying* to do the right thing. At least there was a note about finding her stray…

Describing her current state of health, and their lack of success in finding her owner:

We last saw this dog 10 years ago, when we adopted her our as a young pup. Now she’s 11. She appears to have eye infections, skin issues, and the usual stiffness that comes with age. Of course, we’re treating her issues. And yes, we’ve tried to reach out to her owner (without success).

And their hope of getting her out of the shelter environment:

Ultimately, we would like to find this sweetheart a rescue, foster placement, or forever family where she can live out her remaining days in peace.

Against all odds, a family in Texas has been reunited with a dog who disappeared eight years ago. As reported by Fort Wayne NBC News, the dog, named Kemo, belongs to Cara Seiler and Kailey K***z, who got him when he was just a puppy.

They told the news agency:

“We never really stopped looking, we always hoped, always looking at missing pet posts.”

Their hopes of seeing Kemo again were fulfilled last week when they got an unexpected call from the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control facility. Kemo had been brought in as a stray, and his microchip led staff to Seiler and K***z, who said:

“Kaliey and I were crying the whole way from Auburn to Fort Wayne. It was surreal. When we walked in the door, he knew it was us.”

The animal shelter posted photos of the happy reunion, writing:

We are over the moon happy that Kemo was finally reunited with his family! This was such a heartwarming moment to watch and we’re so glad Kemo had a microchip to make this moment possible.
We hope this story inspires anyone who is missing a pet to never give up hope! We also urge everyone to please get your pets microchipped just in case they were to ever get lost. We do it here for you at the shelter for just $15!
Welcome home Kemo!

Remember, if you have your pet microchipped, keep your contact information up to date!

20/07/2021

Recently, a young bear cub was killed by a speeding car in Yosemite National Park, and the mother bear’s grief was witnessed by a wildlife official who shared the heartbreaking details in a social media post. The recount of the cub’s tragic death begins:

We get this call a lot. Too much, to be honest. “Bear hit by vehicle, dead on the side of the road.” Sadly, it’s become routine. I log the coordinates into my phone, gather the equipment I may need, and head to the location. This call came in cold; it sounds like the collision happened sometime around noon and it’s 4 pm now.

The official details what happens next, noting that it takes an hour to reach the location, and the ranger’s responsibilities after finding the deceased cub:

My job here is easy, really: find the bear, move its body far away from the road to prevent any other animals from getting hit while scavenging on it, fill out a report, and collect samples and measurements for research. Then I’m off on my way again with another number to add to the total of bears hit by vehicles this year—data we hope will help prevent future collisions. Pretty callous. However, the reality behind each of these numbers is not.

The ranger describes the search for the cub, and the grim reality of locating the body:

I turn my gaze from the car part down the embankment on the side of the road and there it is.

A cub. Its tiny light brown body laying just feet from me and the road, nearly invisible to every passerby. It’s a new cub—couldn’t be much more than six months old, now balled up and lifeless under a small pine tree. For a moment I lose track of time as I stand there staring at its tiny body, but then the sound of more cars whizzing by reminds me of my place and my role. I let out a deep sigh and continue on with my task.

Adding:

I pick up the cub—it couldn’t be much more than 25 pounds—and begin carrying it off into the woods. I have no certain destination; I’m just walking until I can no longer hear the hiss of the road behind me. I see a grassy spot surrounded by a semi-ring of down logs and gravitate towards it. The least I can do is find it a nice place to be laid. I lay it down in the grass protected by one of the nearby logs and sit back on the log opposite of it, slightly relieved that it looks far more in place now than when I found it earlier. I take another moment and then continue with my work.

The ranger describes taking notes on the cub – determining that it’s a female, and pondering the life she may have had if not for being killed by the vehicle in the park. Moments later, the ranger hear something nearby:

Just beyond the ring, there’s a familiar figure intently staring back at me. It’s another bear. Surprised, I stand up quickly and the bear runs off into the brush but stops not far off and looks back at me. Acting on instinct, I pick up a stick and smash it over a tree to scare the bear further away. I stand there quietly, listening as I hear the bear’s footsteps tapper away.

At first the ranger thinks that the bear might be there as a scavenger of the body, but a sound reverses that thought:

I hear it, and it changes my mind completely. From behind me there’s a deep toned but soft sounding grunt. I immediately know what it is. It’s a vocalization, the kind sows (female bears) make to call to their cubs. I turn and look in its direction and there she is, the same bear from before intently staring back at me. It’s no coincidence. I can feel the callousness drain from my body. This bear is the mom, and she never left her cub.

Sharing thoughts in acknowledgement of the mother’s incredible grief:

My heart sinks. It’s been nearly six hours and she still hasn’t given up on her cub. I can just imagine how many times she darted back and forth on that road in attempts to wake it. It’s extremely lucky that she wasn’t hit as well. The calls to the cub continue, sounding more pained each time. I glance back finding myself hoping it would respond to her call too, but of course, nothing. Now here I am, standing between a grieving mother and her child. I feel like a monster.

And describing why it is time to leave:

I get up, quickly pack my bag, and get out of there. It is time to go even though my task is not done. Quickly, I set up a remote camera. Why? Every year we report the number of bears that get hit by vehicles, but numbers don’t always paint a picture. I want people to see what I saw: the sad reality behind each of these numbers.

With a final thought on the importance of driving slow in the park, to save lives:

So please, remember this. Remember that when traveling through Yosemite, we are all just visitors in the home of countless animals and it is up to us to follow the rules that protect them. Go the speed limit, drive alertly, and look out for wildlife. Protecting Yosemite’s black bears is something we can all do.

Recently, a young bear cub was killed by a speeding car in Yosemite National Park, and the mother bear’s grief was witnessed by a wildlife official who shared the heartbreaking details in a social media post. The recount of the cub’s tragic death begins: We get this call a lot. Too much, to be h...
