How the Lop-eared gene works: tip for today

Lop doesn't have a gene specifically allocated to them it's a trait
The Lop-eared trait is caused by a mutation in the ROSS Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus Syndactyly gene, which codes for the development of the ears. The mutation leads to an abnormal development of the ear cartilage, resulting in the characteristic lop-eared phenotype.

Inheritance Pattern:
The Lop-eared trait is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning that a single copy of the mutated gene is enough to express the trait. This means that a rabbit only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene/trait (either from its mother or father) to express the Lop-eared trait.

Genotype and Phenotype:
The genotype of a Lop-eared rabbit

- *Ll* or *Ll* (homozygous dominant): Expresses the Lop-eared trait
- *ll* (homozygous recessive): Does not express the Lop-eared trait (normal ears)

The phenotype of a Lop-eared rabbit is characterized by its distinctive ear structure, which can vary in severity depending on the individual rabbit

Tip for today:

When two "true dwarfs" (a buck and a doe) are bred, their genetic pattern (Dwdw) guarantees that 25% of their offspring will inherit the lethal dwdw combination. These offspring, commonly referred to as "peanuts" by rabbit breeders, they struggle to survive and typically die within 1–3 days after birth.

Tri-color Rex rabbits are considered rare.

1. Genetics: The tri-color pattern is a specific genetic trait that requires the presence of particular genes. Not all Rex rabbits carry these genes, making the occurrence of tri-color individuals less common.

2. Breeding Practices: Many breeders focus on specific colors or patterns, which can lead to a limited gene pool. If breeders prioritize certain traits over others, the tri-color trait may not be passed down as frequently.

Understanding Flemish Giants: A Visual Comparison

In the image presented, we can see two rabbits for comparison:

- *Rabbit A*: Marketed as a Flemish Giant.
- *Rabbit B*: A true representation of what a genuine Flemish Giant should look like.

Regrettably, not all breeders have the essential knowledge of this breed, leading to instances where rabbits are mislabeled as Flemish from unreliable sources.

The Flemish Giant is distinguished by its specific type and shape, featuring a broad, heavy-set body, a large, rounded head, and a strong, muscular build long in body longer legs then a meduim animal rabbit should not be narrow.

shape Mandilon long ears shall be in proportion with the body The visible differences between the two rabbits emphasize the necessity of understanding breed standards and the importance of ethical breeding practices.

When individuals voice concerns about prices, they often end up with Rabbit A, which does not accurately reflect the breed. This situation is disheartening for both the client and the breeder, who may have believed they were providing the real deal.

This poster aims to educate: a rabbit is not merely a rabbit; understanding the breed is crucial.
