As part of our International Day for Biological Diversity commemoration, our learners were given a rare and unforgettable opportunity, to come face-to-face with one of nature’s most misunderstood creatures: snakes.

Through this hands-on learning experience, the children didn’t just learn about snakes, they learned to unlearn the myths. Fear was replaced with curiosity. Ignorance was exchanged for understanding. And in that moment, biodiversity became more than just a big word, it became personal. Because true environmental education is not just about planting trees; it’s about uprooting misconceptions, too.

In protecting our ecosystems, we must also protect the truth, every creature, even the slithering ones, plays a vital role in the balance of life.

We had the joy of hosting little ones from various Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) as part of our Schools-Environment Program, and what a beautiful reminder it was that the journey to a greener future begins with the smallest hands and the simplest lessons.

In our view, environmental education should start as early as yesterday. Biodiversity, clean air, healthy soil, waste separation, these aren’t "later" conversations. These are now conversations, and our children deserve to be part of them from the beginning. Because if we want a generation that protects the Earth, we must raise one that understands it.

Through our Schools-Environment Program, we proudly Petco Producer Responsibility Organisation NPC , the City of Tshwane | Official (Page) , and Pick n Pay School Club to commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity.

Together with passionate learners from various schools and early childhood development centres, we celebrated the richness of life on Earth, not just in theory, but through practice, awareness, and environmental action. It was more than a day of learning; it was a call to protect, preserve, and pass down our planet's natural heritage to generations yet to come.

In the heart of our informal settlements, illegal dumping has become more than just an eyesore — it’s a biodiversity crime. That litter doesn’t just stay put: it chokes our rivers, kills marine life, clogs drainage systems leading to destructive pipe bursts, and emits methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas fueling climate change. It even kills animals that roam our communities.

We’ve begun enlightening our people, pollution is not just waste, it’s warfare against creation. Let’s protect our communities, our wildlife, and our climate.

In the face of a changing climate, we plant. On Afrika Vuka Day in Mamelodi RDP, our garden demonstration was more than symbolic, it was strategic. Backyard and community gardens are not just about food; they are climate solutions. They cool our spaces, restore our soil, absorb carbon, and reduce the emissions tied to food transport. They help communities adapt to harsher seasons, and mitigate the harm by healing the land. With every seed we plant, we’re building resilience and reclaiming control. This is what local climate action looks like—hands in the soil, rooted in purpose. Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development 350 Africa

On Afrika Vuka Day, we stood shoulder to shoulder with the climate justice movements, not by raising banners, but by raising awareness. In the heart of Mamelodi RDP, we brought the fight home through education, dialogue, and grassroots monitoring. At Backyard Farmers, our approach may be quiet, but it is never passive. We honour those who march in the streets, just as we honour those who teach in the dust of informal settlements, because we are one movement, with many voices, all rising for the same cause: justice for our Earth and our people. 350 Africa 350.org

In partnership with Afrika Vuka, Backyard Farmers invites you to stand with a new generation rising for a climate-smart Africa—bold, united, and rooted in justice. On Afrika Vuka Day, we gather in Mamelodi not just to clean our environment, but to reclaim our power: our right to clean energy, a healthy planet, and dignified communities. Through dialogue, storytelling, and local art, we’ll echo a collective call—"I will not litter"—not as a slogan, but as a vow to honour our land and shape our future. This is more than an event. It’s a movement to awaken Africa's voice, one action at a time. Let’s rise together.

Backyard Farmers, through its transformative Schools-Environment Program, in partnership with PETCO, Pick n Pay School Club, and the City of Tshwane, will join hands with various schools to commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity on 20 May 2025 at Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

As stewards of the earth, we believe it is imperative to educate our young minds about the richness of biodiversity and the urgent call to preserve it. This day is not just a celebration—it's a classroom beneath the sky, where nature becomes the teacher and our learners, the future custodians of creation.

Backyard Farmers is a community-rooted movement advancing climate justice through education and awakening. In a global landscape where many changemakers take to the streets with powerful protest and direct action—an essential voice in the climate conversation—we walk alongside them, offering a complementary path. Ours is the path of environmental literacy: slow, steady, deeply rooted in local schools and communities.

We believe lasting change is cultivated when people understand their environment, connect with it meaningfully, and are empowered to take ownership of it. That’s why our initiatives focus on engaging young learners and township communities—where climate injustice often hits hardest, yet environmental education is most absent. By planting gardens, greening communities, and teaching sustainability, we sow seeds that grow a just, resilient future—one township, one school at a time.

Too often, Ministers and government leaders come across as distant—disconnected from the everyday struggles and urgent realities faced by the people they serve. But meeting Brazil’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, was a refreshing exception. Her humility, deep sense of purpose, and unwavering patriotism stood out. A former activist who walked the hard road herself, she remains grounded in the very values she once fought for. Today, she continues to champion a protected environment and places the just transition at the heart of her mission. Her leadership reminds us that true power lies in remaining connected to the people—and the planet—we are called to serve.
