Celebrating Wildlife Vets on the International Day of Veterinary Medicine

Today, we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of wildlife veterinarians—the unsung heroes working on the frontlines of conservation and animal care. From protecting endangered species to managing wildlife health, their work plays a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance.

Wildlife vets are not just caregivers; they are innovators, conservationists, and advocates, often working in challenging and remote conditions to ensure the survival of iconic species. Their efforts inspire us to continue supporting the health and wellbeing of our planet's incredible wildlife.

To all the wildlife vets out there: thank you for your bravery, dedication, and compassion in safeguarding the natural world.

A recent wildlife conservation effort saw impalas being released into a secure eco-estate. This initiative ensures these graceful antelopes will thrive in a protected and natural environment, enhancing the biodiversity of the area.

Releasing wildlife into eco-friendly spaces like this demonstrates the importance of safeguarding nature and creating habitats where animals can live and roam freely. It’s a meaningful step forward for conservation and sustainable living.

Let’s appreciate the dedication of everyone involved in making this possible. Efforts like these are crucial for building a healthier planet for all species.

🎯 Precision & Durability: New Dart Tails for 11mm & 13mm Darts!

We’re excited to introduce new, thicker dart tails designed to capture more gas for improved stability over long distances and thus improved accuracy and reliability. These enhanced tails are stronger and more durable, making them reusable and long-lasting.

What’s new?
🎯Thicker tails = more gas captured for improved accuracy
🎯Stronger material and design for better performance and longevity
🎯The new fibres minimize the drag which reduces the loss of speed over long distances
🎯Available on both 11mm and 13mm darts

The feedback so far has been fantastic! Our new dart tails are setting a new standard for precision darting in wildlife management. Try them out and experience the difference!

Innovating Wildlife Care: The Motsumi Marking Dart 🐘

Originally designed to vaccinate Kudu in Namibia to protect them from rabies outbreaks, the Motsumi Marking Dart has revolutionized how we vaccinate and dose wild animals. Its success has expanded far beyond kudu, with proven applications in administering contraceptives to elephants and more.

What makes the Motsumi Dart special?
The marking and feedback system ensures that 95% of the dose is delivered before marking the animal, providing veterinarians, pilots, and farmers the confidence that the full dose has been administered.

Whether for vaccinations or contraceptive dosing, this technology ensures precision and efficiency in the field.

This innovative tool enables veterinarians to treat wildlife from a distance, improving animal health while minimizing stress. The Motsumi Dart has truly transformed the approach to wildlife veterinary care!

🦏 Rhino Conservation in Action! 🦏

We’re proud to be part of an incredible conservation effort—darting and translocating rhinos for their safety and to protect endangered populations. Today, we successfully darted a rhino from a helicopter, a critical first step in its safe relocation to a protected reserve!

Why is this important? Translocating rhinos helps ensure their safety from poaching and supports genetic diversity across different reserves. Each relocation is a carefully planned operation, and using a helicopter allows us to minimize stress on the rhino while navigating challenging terrain.

The rhino is safely sedated, transported with the utmost care, and monitored every step of the way by our expert veterinary team to ensure its health and well-being.

This is what wildlife conservation looks like — protecting the future of rhinos, one move at a time!

Wildlife Vets Namibia explaining how to use Motsumi Darts.

Check out the link below for our September newsletter! 👇

💉🎯 We explain what darts we use (Pneu-Dart Inc. & Motsumi Darts), and how they work.
🐃🤧 The Namibian Chamber of Environment wrote an interesting blog about Snotsiekte (Malignant Catarrhal Fever). The blog, called ‘Ineffective and unscientific wildebeest regulations are harming Namibia’s economy’ goes deeper into the problems caused by regulations for wildebeest owners.
⚡🔋 Farmers frequently call to ask why their animals, in spite of being fed grass hay and lucerne, still loose condition and often die. Grass and lucerne are relatively poor in energy, and energy in food is what powers the body to do everything. We give some additional options you can add to the supplemental feed. If you have tips for farmers, we love to hear from you!

Thank you very much to David Pretorius and Motsumi for assisting me at very short notice to make darts that fit perfectly on my transmitter dart tails. They flew better than any of the previous ones and stuck in the neck and shoulders of the hyaenas, allowing us to track them in the middle of the night.
