Why are vultures circling?

It’s not always what you think...
Vultures ride rising warm air currents called thermals to soar effortlessly while scanning the ground for food. Sometimes, they’re just catching a free lift — other times, they’ve already spotted a carcass below.

Nature’s clean-up crew, doing their job from above.

Today we celebrate World Giraffe Day

At Motsumi Darts, we work closely with vets and conservationists to protect these iconic animals.

Although giraffe populations have shown some local growth, the species as a whole remains under threat, facing habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Conservation is not just about numbers, but about securing healthy, sustainable populations for future generations.

Every dart, every collaring, every relocation — it's all part of a bigger mission.

We’re proud to play a role in their protection.

Wildebeest darting ahead of auction day!

Dr David Pretorius and the Motsumi Darts team were recently out in the field, safely darting wildebeest in preparation for an upcoming wildlife auction.

This process enables thorough health checks, safe transportation, and stress-free handling, ensuring the animals are in optimal condition before the big day.

Another smooth and professional operation by the team!

Dr David Pretorius and the Canadian Veterinary Technicians in action!

During a recent field session, the team treated a wound on the back of a stunning Saddleback Blesbok — a great hands-on opportunity to combine wildlife care with practical training.

Moments like these highlight the importance of skilled teamwork, ethical handling, and international collaboration in wildlife veterinary work.

Thank you Wildlife Vets Namibia. A great explanation of the darting process and tracking methods in the field! The use of marker darts is such an efficient way to keep track, especially when working with large herds like kudu and eland.

Rabies prevention is critical, and it's impressive to see this level of precision and care in action.

When Should You Use a Prodder in Wildlife Work?

At Motsumi Darts, we advocate for safe, ethical wildlife handling, using the right tools at the right time.

A prodder can be effective in certain high-pressure situations, but it should always be used with purpose, training, and respect for the animal.

When is it appropriate to use a prodder?
✅ To prompt an animal to stand after reversal of immobilisation, especially if prolonged recumbency could lead to complications.
✅In tight or high-risk settings where controlled movement is critical to prevent injury.
✅To reposition an animal safely and minimally, particularly in situations where quick intervention is necessary for circulation or breathing.

When not to use it:
🚫As a first response or routine handling method.
🚫On highly stressed or compromised animals.
🚫Without adequate training and judgment.

The prodder should never replace good field technique. It’s a backup tool, not a primary solution, and must be used only when absolutely necessary, with the animal’s welfare in mind.
