Lola was adopted last year. She was with us for a long time. She had some aggression issues we had to sort out and was adopted not long after she came in. But she was sent back within a month or two. This girl was so broken when she arrived back. It's as if they know they were not good enough or they feel thrown away again. She would just lay in bed for days with a very sad expression. And when the aggression showed itself again it was way way worse. So we worked with her for a very long time. Hoping for the right home to come along. You will notice she is also our profile pic. This girl went through so much. Until Marion Werner came along. We had long conversations over the phone and she decided she would take the chance on Loula. Just look at the Happy Hound she has become. She loves playing with her Ridgeback sister and fits in so well. While we eagerly wait for rain so our grass can hopefully come in again after the cold winter. The dogs seem to enjoy kicking up sandstorms that can put the desert to shame🤦 And they mine (as evidenced by the holes everywhere) better than Sibanye Gold's best miners🤣. We can't wait for everything to be green again. But all and all Buddy seems to be getting to a point where he likes to play and engage with the others. Phew! Finally got home after a very long day in the city. One of our awesome vets gave us some free dentals. We left the house at about 6 am this morning and returned just after 7 pm. Which reminds me why I don't live in the city🤣 There's absolutely no reason for traffic to be going slower on a highway in the middle of nowhere, but still it happens. When you get to the front of the congestion there's nothing and it just starts moving again. Why?🙈 It makes for some good sightseeing though. Nikki and Roy are very happy to be home and in bed after they had some well deserved meat for the sore gummies. Now we can all have a good night's rest! It has been more than a week now and we have yet to see Mr Abuti's aggression. He just decided Buddy needs to be his new best friend and won't leave him alone. So we are trying to get him to calm down a bit before he annoys an oldie and they try to snap at him. Abuti (or Bobotie as he is called now due to a hilarious slip of the tongue yesterday🙈) seems to be settling in quite well. We have only had about 3 incidents in the last two days. His foot got caught in his harness and whilst aunty L was trying to free him he had a bit of a snappy moment. But that was to be expected. He had just arrived and was unsure and got stuck properly so she was struggling to free him. Then he didn't want to come inside last night as he isn't used to sleeping inside the house. So he got a little agitated when I picked him up to carry him inside. But as soon as he realized he was allowed to be inside he jumped on the bed and right on top of my stomach and snuggled most of the night. I just had to move him after a while because he is a big boy and hampered my breathing🤣 But he had no issues with being moved gently. And he definitely has some food aggression, but that's not new for some of these Bassets. That can normally be corrected easily. So for now we have not had any Boogeyman episodes. We are cautiously optimistic about him. He is a velcro dog for now and does whine when he doesn't see either of us. And he even tries to play with the other dogs. He has an ear infection that doesn't look good but we were warned that it's a recurring problem. So he has been started on medication for that to try and get some relief then we'll do a smear and see what we are dealing with. Jess and Hennessey have hit the jackpot today. They will be going to Ilse, their new foster Mom. We will miss them so so much. But with Hennessey's hip dysplasia and Jess' glaucoma they need to be closer to specialists to monitor them. Our vets are not orthopedic or eye specialists and in an emergency we would need to drive over an hour to get them the care they would need. They both will be kept a close eye on and looked after wonderfully. The worst part of dealing with the seniors is the loss we experience constantly. You always feel like you have failed the dog and SABA if you couldn't save one of them. While we know it's a part of life especially with the age range we have, it breaks you every time. My worst loss whilst doing this was losing a boy that was only here for 2 days. He had cancer and his lungs were riddled with tumors, he had so much difficulty breathing. I had to take a time-out for 7 days. While losing a dog that has been with you for years is devastating, you can't help but feel immense sadness when you have to hold one that doesn't know you from Adam. He hasn't had time to trust you yet, he doesn't know that you actually had to do this to help him, he doesn't know you would go to the ends of the earth for him yet. It is so so heartbreaking. But we try and do better for the next one and try and be more informed and try and be more vigilant with certain symptoms or reactions. We know this isn't a basset. But sometimes you actually need to open your horizons when you see something in need. Whilst out getting food for dogs as well as our farm animals yesterday we had to go past auction premises. We noticed this little guy in a pen with an ewe that clearly wasn't his mother. He couldn't be more than a few days old and the ewe showed no signs of having lambed in the last few days. Everyone was looking for the farmer that brought them in to try and ascertain what happened to the mom, as this little guy won't survive a day without being fed and cared for properly. But the guilty party was nowhere to be found as often is the case when people are up in arms. One of the managers seems like they knew we were suckers for punishment and approached us to find out if we would help🙈. So Lelani negotiated the release of the dehydrated little lamb to us. By then all the co-ops had closed and we couldn't get the milk replacer he would need. But a very generous Samaritan came to us and had some milk replacer in his car that he was using to raise his own lambs. He gave us enough to keep us until we can get more on Monday. Farm animals are so misunderstood most times. It breaks your heart when you see things like this. Proper farmers care about the health and safety of their animals. Little Devanté at least made it through the night and we hope we can get him healthy and happy. Please spare a thought for this boy and what he has been through. While I've always had a deep love for animals as all of us do. I don't think I could have ever dreamed of doing what I am doing today. It's a thankless job some days, it's a hard job most days, but it is also the most rewarding job every single day.
