McKaynine Mobility

McKaynine Mobility Private & Online Canine Conditioning lessons for Rehab, Prehab & Sports Performance! I couldn’t get enough information fast enough!
(4)

Motivated by the welfare of the dogs while competing in dangerous sports like agility, dry-land sledding and working trials, I began learning about canine conditioning in 2016. The more I learned, the more I realised that every dog, no matter what age, fitness level or activities they participate in, should be doing therapeutic exercises. In January 2018, I started teaching classes at McKaynine Ho

neydew. Thanks to K9 Yoga, I’ve seen phenomenal progress in dogs with various physical and mental challenges! All of my success in dog agility is due to canine conditioning, and my retired dogs also live happy, comfortable, active lives thanks to their exercises. I want every dog owner to share this success! McKaynine Mobility brings K9 Yoga to more dogs, even those who cannot attend lessons in person due to behavioural issues or travel distance. I offer the following:

- ‘Prehab’, for healthy dogs who’s owners want to train the behaviours they may need one day in the event of an injury.

- Assistance with physio-prescribed rehabilitation exercise programmes following diagnosis of imbalances, illness and injuries.

- Maintenance programmes for dogs who have recovered from illness or injuries.
- Sport Specific exercise programmes to enhance performance and improve safety of the sport. For example, programmes to improve specific aspects of:

> Competitive Obedience, like straighter sits and downs, more reliable stays, more energetic and precise heal work.

> Breed Shows, like building muscle mass or improving gait.

> Agility, like Weave Pole programmes, Dogwalk workshops, Jump courses to improve jump efficiency and reduce knocked bars.

> Flyball, like box turn safety and power.

- Doggy Zen programmes for hyperactive or nervous dogs who battle with focus, stimulus control or being touched.

- Fun, for owners who want a safe and enjoyable bonding activity with their pets. Can’t wait to help you and your dog on your canine conditioning journey! Kind Regards

I have 4 of these foam blocks in stock. More available on pre-order.

They are slightly unstable so a perfect solution for dogs who are ready to progress to less stable items but not yet ready for very unstable items. Because they are soft, your dogs nails will make some marks.

How long will it take for my dogs injury to heal? How long will it take for my sport dogs performance to improve? How long will it take for my older dogs arthritis pain to improve?

It all takes time, but more importantly, CONSISTENCY! The more consistent you are with appropriate exercise, appropriate progressions and appropriate management, the less time it will take!

Backchaining Crescent Moon with Keidis

Keidis has a few degenerative spine issues which are causing his spine to lose lateral flexibility and his hindlimb to atrophy rapidly. He is very reluctant to laterally flex his spine and often yelps in pain while trying. His hind legs also tend to collapse. His physiotherapist has recommended doing this exercise daily. Here's how I convince him to do it.

Step 1: Front Touch

I warm up his hind legs by asking him to stand with his front legs raised. I try to get him as neutral and stacked as possible by changing my treat position. I jackpot him for holding the most correct position possible and give him an extra snack for releasing on cue.

Step 2: Back Touch

To improve his hind leg awareness and hind limb adduction, I lure him to stand with his rear legs on a platform as high and as close to hip width as possible. Some days he struggles more and I need to make the platform lower or wider to help him. Some days he does very well and I can use smaller items, like bricks, to encourage better posture. I use my shoulders and treat position to help him get both feet up if he is struggling with adduction.

I jackpot him for holding the position with good posture and give a release cookie for releasing on cue. If he self-releases, I use a No Reward Marker to let him know that was not what I wanted.

Step 3 and 4: Place Position and Side Bends in Place Position.

Keidis is very wobbly and unstable on his hind legs. His back legs often collapse when I ask him to bend his spine.

Getting him to stand between my legs allows him to lean on me a bit before he is warmed up enough to stabilize himself. I can use a hand under his belly to help keep his knees straighter, and he can lean on my leg as he bends to the side.

Step 5: Side Bends against a wall

Once Keidis is warmed up enough that he does not lean on my legs as much, I move him to a wall and get him to bend to each side while leaning against the wall or my hand. This continues to warm up his lateral spine flexion and balance without making it too hard / painful too soon.

Step 6: All Up

Using targets as small as possible to encourage a good neutral posture, and a front foot target as high as possible to improve hindlimb strength, I get him to stand with all 4 feet up. If he is struggling with rear limb adduction, I will use a wider rear foot target. If he is struggling with hip extension or if his hind legs are collapsing, I will use a lower front foot target.

Step 7: Crescent Moon with Front Feet Raised

With all 4 feet up, with front feet raised as high as possible, and using targets as small as possible to encourage perfect posture, I lure Keidis head as far to the side as possible. With each shift of his head to the side where his feet stay still, I use a Reward Marker and reward. If his feet move, or begin to move off the targets, I use a No Reward Marker, withhold Reward, and reward for returning the offending foot to the correct position. If he is losing balance or collapsing, I know I'm asking for too much and return his head to where he previously had success. If he is really struggling, I might return to one of the previous steps to warm him up more, or just do more reps if that step. I do an even number of reps on both sides.

🐾 Attention, K9Yogi's! 🐾 Did you know that just like us, our furry companions also benefit from a healthy balance of neurotransmitters? Serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins play a crucial role in boosting our pups' happiness levels.

Serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter, helps regulate mood and promotes feelings of well-being in our canine friends. Dopamine, the reward neurotransmitter, is responsible for that tail-wagging excitement they show when they see their favorite toy or receive a treat. Oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," strengthens the bond between us and our dogs, fostering trust and affection. And let's not forget about endorphins, nature's painkillers, which not only alleviate discomfort but also contribute to that joyful bounce in their step during playtime.

Ensuring our dogs have plenty of opportunities for exercise, socialization, affection, and a balanced diet can help maintain optimal levels of these neurotransmitters, ultimately leading to a happier and healthier furry friend. Let's give our pups the love and care they deserve, inside and out! 🐶💕

Tell us you train huskies without telling us you train huskies. 🤣😅

Today's K9Yoga buffet for Saz, Bu, JJ and DD includes roasted chicken, venison, beef, and chicken hearts, pets elite dried raw, plus various breads baked with liver, fish and blueberries. If we are lucky, they'll accept one or two of these and maybe be willing to do the exercises.

EQUIPMENT:
> 1 stable, non-slip foot target.
> Flat, stable, non-slip ground.

PREREQUISITES:
> Back Touch Stay.

THE EXERCISE:
> Start your dog with rear feet raised on a stable, non-slip platform and their front feet each on flat, stable, non-slip ground.
> Tell your dog their 'stay' cue and then lure them to step forward slightly with their front feet.
> If their rear feet stay on the target, give a Reward Marker and reward, then lure slight further forward on the next rep.
> If their rear feet move, then give a No Reward Marker and do not reward, then lure slightly less forward on the next rep.
> Be consistent in your criteria of rear feet remaining still.
> Only progress further forward if you are having success with no rear foot movement. It will vary according to each dog's flexibility and understanding.
> Lure them backwards to their original position, again with no rear foot movement, and repeat.
> Never release your dog, or allow them to self-release from the extended position as this could result in injury! Always return your dog to flexion / the original position before releasing them.

PROGRESSIONS:
> Low, wide rear foot target is easier.
> High, narrow rear foot target is more strenuous.
> Pay attention to quality and signs of fatigue. Never progress at the expense of quality or comfort.
> Only increase one criteria at a time.
> Do not use unstable equipment if your goal is flexibility.

BENEFITS:
> Improves flexibility of the iliopsoas, quadriceps and sartorius and strengthens the glutials and hamstrings on the stretch.
> Strenthens the shoulder stabilizers throughout the exercise.
> Strengthens the iliopsoas, quadriceps and sartorius during flexion to the original position.
> Dynamic stretch, perfect for a pre-activity warm up.
