Intermediate: use progressively smaller and/or less stable items, such as foam blocks, scatter cushions, folded towels, bricks, etc.
Advanced: use progressivley smaller and/or less stable items, such as balance pods, shaped foam blocks, small bean bags, etc.
Goals
1. Shift weight to the hindlimb.
2. Increase hip extension.
3. Encourage stillness & calmness.
4. Improve body awareness.
5. Improve handler skill.
Success Criteria
1. Topline straight.
2. Hocks parallel to each other, perpindicular to the ground and hip width apart.
3. Pasterns parallel to each other, perpindicular to the ground and shoulder width apart.
4. Dog maintains position in a calm manner for a few seconds and only dismounts on cue.
Exercise 2
↙️ Back Touch. Lure your to stand with their rear feet on a raised surface and front feet on the ground. Keep your hands low to keep the head low (this will protect the neck and help stop them from sitting). Repeat the verbal cue while jackpotting, and end with a release cue and a release treat.

Backchaining Crescent Moon with Keidis
Keidis has a few degenerative spine issues which are causing his spine to lose lateral flexibility and his hindlimb to atrophy rapidly. He is very reluctant to laterally flex his spine and often yelps in pain while trying. His hind legs also tend to collapse. His physiotherapist has recommended doing this exercise daily. Here's how I convince him to do it.
Step 1: Front Touch
I warm up his hind legs by asking him to stand with his front legs raised. I try to get him as neutral and stacked as possible by changing my treat position. I jackpot him for holding the most correct position possible and give him an extra snack for releasing on cue.
Step 2: Back Touch
To improve his hind leg awareness and hind limb adduction, I lure him to stand with his rear legs on a platform as high and as close to hip width as possible. Some days he struggles more and I need to make the platform lower or wider to help him. Some days he does very well and I can use smaller items, like bricks, to encourage better posture. I use my shoulders and treat position to help him get both feet up if he is struggling with adduction.
I jackpot him for holding the position with good posture and give a release cookie for releasing on cue. If he self-releases, I use a No Reward Marker to let him know that was not what I wanted.
Step 3 and 4: Place Position and Side Bends in Place Position.
Keidis is very wobbly and unstable on his hind legs. His back legs often collapse when I ask him to bend his spine.
Getting him to stand between my legs allows him to lean on me a bit before he is warmed up enough to stabilize himself. I can use a hand under his belly to help keep his knees straighter, and he can lean on my leg as he bends to the side.
Step 5: Side Bends against a wall
Once Keidis is warmed up enough that he does not lean on my legs as much, I move him to a wall and get him to bend to each side while leaning against the wall or my

EQUIPMENT:
> 1 stable, non-slip foot target.
> Flat, stable, non-slip ground.
PREREQUISITES:
> Back Touch Stay.
THE EXERCISE:
> Start your dog with rear feet raised on a stable, non-slip platform and their front feet each on flat, stable, non-slip ground.
> Tell your dog their 'stay' cue and then lure them to step forward slightly with their front feet.
> If their rear feet stay on the target, give a Reward Marker and reward, then lure slight further forward on the next rep.
> If their rear feet move, then give a No Reward Marker and do not reward, then lure slightly less forward on the next rep.
> Be consistent in your criteria of rear feet remaining still.
> Only progress further forward if you are having success with no rear foot movement. It will vary according to each dog's flexibility and understanding.
> Lure them backwards to their original position, again with no rear foot movement, and repeat.
> Never release your dog, or allow them to self-release from the extended position as this could result in injury! Always return your dog to flexion / the original position before releasing them.
PROGRESSIONS:
> Low, wide rear foot target is easier.
> High, narrow rear foot target is more strenuous.
> Pay attention to quality and signs of fatigue. Never progress at the expense of quality or comfort.
> Only increase one criteria at a time.
> Do not use unstable equipment if your goal is flexibility.
BENEFITS:
> Improves flexibility of the iliopsoas, quadriceps and sartorius and strengthens the glutials and hamstrings on the stretch.
> Strenthens the shoulder stabilizers throughout the exercise.
> Strengthens the iliopsoas, quadriceps and sartorius during flexion to the original position.
> Dynamic stretch, perfect for a pre-activity warm up.

During this week's session with little Nirvana the Italian Greyhound, we focused on rear foot targeting. Since Nirvana has some discomfort in her lower back, a weaker hind right, and patella luxation, these exercises will help to strengthen her hindlimb, mobilise her lumbosacral junction and improve her hindlimb awareness. She's learning super fast! She's so cute, I want to steal her.
