When a CAT GOES MISSING you have to act immediately
You have to ask neighbours in a 10 block radius, flyers, posters, physically go to as many SPCA’s as possible, go to vets, go out late at night & call their names, while moving slowly through the streets
A newly moved cat is bewildered & scared and there are no familiar smells & will run off if you don’t follow the proper protocol of keeping him/her inside for at least 3 weeks
When a cat goes missing, he/she could have landed up in someone’s garden
People drop cats off at vets and SPCA’s & rescue organisations the second they spot a cat - they don’t bother to ask around - so you have to ACT FAST & COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS
When you go to an SPCA branch take along a missing poster to be put up on their notice board (no bigger than A4) with all the relevant info under the photo: GENDER / DATE GONE MISSING / AREA / CONTACT INFO / CHIPPED - NOT CHIPPED / STERILISED
Also give staff an A5 printed photo of your cat so they can show kennel hands
When you call vets, it has to be vets in at least a 20km radius, which will entail googling as many vet practises as possible because people can take cats out of the area to drop them at a vet far from your home
Speaking with neighbours is what is vital: cats can get into a storeroom, a garage, an empty room, go and hide somewhere in that space & then get trapped there
You have to IMMEDIATELY make social media posts BUT YOU CANNOT RELY ON THIS ALONE
YOU HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE
YOU HAVE TO THINK BEYOND YOUR IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS
Broaden your scope of search - there are unique stories where cats have been found in different provinces - so search groups in other areas, check as many SPCA pages around the country
DON’T WAIT DAYS BEFORE YOU START ANY OF THESE STEPS
ACT IMMEDIATELY
