**Important Notice**

With a very heavy heart, we at Dog Challenge have decided to stop all our group classes, including Puppy Classes.

I have been given the opportunity last year to join forces and go into partnership with a elite K9 missing pets search and rescue unit. The very first of its kind in South Africa.

We will still be available for Private one on one lessons.

We would like to thank each and every one for their support, kindness and love.

A SPECIAL thanks goes to Muldersdrift Animal clinic for allowing us to be able to run our classes at their practice. We started there in 2008 and became part of the furniture. Thank you for everything!

Palm Gardens Veterinary Clinic thank you for allowing us to run our classes at your practice for the past year.

Last but not least, Hill’s Pet Nutrition thank you for making the puppy classes a success. We could not have done this without your support!

A huge thanks goes out to all our sponsors over the years. We truly appreciate you.

If you have ANY dog behavior problem, the first step is simple. STOP Feeding your dog from a food bowl! Food is so valuable for modifying your dog's behavior, but not if you dump it into a bowl and walk away.

Download this document, sign the Pledge, and start harnessing the power of your dog's food today!

We can show you how to work MAGIC with your dog's food, but only if they care about it. If your dog eats their food, for free, with zero effort, from a bowl, they're not going to care very much about your food and you've lost the magic.

You can use food to teach your dog to feel calm and confident in any situation, and perform behaviors on cue, promptly and reliably. We can even show you how you can USE YOUR DOG'S FOOD TO GET THEM TO TRAIN THEMSELVES when you are busy or away!

But not if you feed your dog from a bowl.

What should socialisation look like? Well. Hopefully with a well researched owner, the first part is easy. The first part is calculating what is possible. With thorough research and an experienced breeder this comes under ensuring the puppy is correct for the home. Who the puppy is gives you a clue as to what is possible and appropriate and ethical. A rural bred stock guarding Tibetan mastiff is unlikely to make a good candidate for an easy cafe/urban family pet to take to the dog park. For many individuals of this breed that reality would never be comfortable and shouldn’t be attempted.

If the owner has not had the benefit of plenty of research and a decent breeder whose given the right puppy for their lifestyle then we as professionals can helped work out the parameters of what is going to be realistic and appropriate for the puppy.

However, it’s not necessary for every dog to be socialised in every environment. Dog trainers often get stuck on this idea of blanket socialisation. I don’t put too much emphasis on taking my sports bred mondio malinois puppy to dog parks or to chill and watch kids playing unless I’m working her. I want to be able to work her around these things but I’d never expect her to relax around them or to play with strange kids or dogs. I don’t need that and she doesn’t need that. Countryside dogs don’t always require city training and vida versa.

Each socialisation is and should be different based on what’s possible and fair for that dog (genetics and early puppyhood dependant) as well as realistically what’s needed to help the puppy fit in with the life they’re going to have. The whole process choice should be about selecting the right hand for the glove and doing everything to enhance confort and longevity: choosing appropriate dogs and the creating resilience and training for comfort all based on the life they’re personally going to live.

:There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Chanum Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

From the bottom of my heart, I love this breed. I know what's coming and so do the shelters and rescues."

Not guilt, not naughtiness, not relaxed, not happy, not satisfied, not proud of herself, not sheepish, not 'she knows what she did wrong', not spiteful, not revengeful...just FEAR!

Ears down
Stiff gait
Tense jaw
Looking away
Whale eyes
Rolling over
Cowering posture
Trying to be invisible

Yesh it's not funny...😔

GET A PLASTIC PLANT RATHER...

It's unfair to expect our dogs to NOT exhibit certain behaviours which may be natural to them or express emotions which can be improved with emotional support, training and enrichment:

1. Barking at random noises, people, dogs and falling leaves
2. Chasing moving targets
3. Digging holes
4. Chewing household stuff
5. Urinating inappropriate places or on things
6. Jumping up on people and furniture
7. 'Stealing' food left out
8. 'Stealing' your slippers and other household stuff
9. Not coming when called as there is something better to do
10. Rolling in stinky stuff
11. Playing in mud
12. Eating nasty stuff
13. Licking or scratching themselves in front of guests
14. Then licking your face
15. Burying stuff and digging it up 2 minutes later
16. Pulling your plants out
17. Nipping your fingers in excitement
18. Guarding the bed, couch, toys or their humans
19. Begging for food
20. Vocalising in excitement when they see you after a long day or when getting ready for a walk
21. Growling at strangers
22. Refusing to play with children
23. Being afraid of being left alone
24. Being boisterous
25. Not sitting when asked every 2 minutes
26. Pulling on a leash
27. Lunging at people and dogs while on a walk
28. Too 'clingy'
29. Too independent
30. Too grumpy
31. Too naughty
32. Too 'stubborn'
33. Staring at people or dogs or cats or birds
34. Chasing their tails
35. Herding children or other pets
36. Fear of thunder or lightning
37. Mounting
38. Etc..

Rescue dogs are not the only ones that exhibit these behaviours...even dogs from backyard breeders and fancy breeders do these things.

If any of the above irritates or angers you, then try and understand why they are doing it and their emotional state. Try and provide training, enrichment, environment management and emotional support for them to improve these behaviours or cope better.

If you can't take the time to understand them, respect their individuality, unique personalities or make time to provide physical and mental stimulation, and emotional support, then please get a plant. A plastic one.

Having a living, breathing pet means dealing with breed specific behaviours, as well as complex feelings and emotions. It's not fair to expect perfection or conformance to your ideal of what a dog should be.

DOORBELL OR DOOR KNOCKING TRAINING

A common problem between dogs and the door is excessive barking, particularly when the doorbell rings or if something knocks.
The key is to desensitize your dog to the sound of the doorbell or knocking:

Sit somewhere near your front door and ask a friend or neighbor to ring the doorbell or knock. When it rings or there is a knock, completely ignore it as well as your dog’s barking. Do not stand up, speak, or open the door.

Wait till your dog is completely silent before getting up to open the door. You can ask for a sit if you want. Reward him for calm behaviours.

Allow your dog to greet your guest as his reward. Also add a treat if all 4 feet are on the ground and if he is calm.

Repeat this process until your dog becomes desensitized to the sound of the doorbell or knocking. This may take multiple 10-15 minute sessions.

Be patient! Some dogs learn more quickly than others.
