To everyone who enjoyed their New Year Celebrations with loud bangs... My sister, nephew, 2 sons and the rest of the Manderston Kennels. Team, who brought in the new year comforting dogs traumatised by the fireworks in Midrand last night. 😔😡

Copied...
I want to thank my tireless team for their hard work and dedication, last night, during the fireworks. The worst year ever.

Lisa, Polite, Thomas, Russell, Rowan, Isaac, Petrus, Shorty, John and Jean.

They were in the Manderston Kennels. from 22.30, when the fireworks started and finally went to bed at 1 30am. They nursed, cuddled, held your dogs. They treated them with rescue medication. Russell even slept with the Bostons, in their run. Just before midnight we gave them all treats to chew. Hopefully creating a distraction. We had a number of the very serious cases in crates, in the house, treated and covered with blankets. Music playing to assist in drown out the noise.

Thomas sat with my dogs on their area to insure they were all safe. I was the inside person wth petrified rescue dogs.

The staff rotated continually. To ensure their safety.

Our hearts go out to the animals who were not so lucky.

Please consider the animals around you. It is no joke to see how these poor
Animals go berserk. They do not understand.

To all who sent off fireworks.

SHAME ON YOU. YOU ARE INVITED TO SPEND TiME IN OUR KENNELS NEXT YEAR AND WITNESS WHAT YOUR SELFISHNESS DOES.

For those who support the selling and use of fireworks, may your 2023 bring you a terrible itch you just can't scratch. 🤔

I am extremely proud of Avril and Bella who passed Canine Good Citizen Bronze level this past weekend. Avril came to classes saying "I'm just here for fun, Bella won't learn anything". Well Avril, Bella has taught you that old dogs can learn new tricks. 💞

This is incredibly sad, but something that will happen on occasion, so it doesn't come as a surprise to me. I'm not saying the child here w at fault, or even that the dogs were at fault. There must've been certain circumstances to have happened to have 2 family pets turn on a member of the family. But they acted true to their DNA. Be it Pitbulls, Rottweilers, Boerboels, German Shepherds... There have been maulings. These breeds are bred for specific purposes and if not treated with the respect that they deserve, these incidents are going to happen. It's in the DNA!

Remember Siegfried and Roy... The tiger killed Roy... (and I hear the gasps of "it was a tame tiger"). No, the tiger did what was in it's DNA. Us humans are puny and are no match for a tiger's claws or teeth, nor that of a chihuahua or Pitbull. They will inflict damage.

Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray, the ray didn't look at him and think "oh that's the guy who calls himself 'The Crocodile Hunter', he won't harm me... No, he got too close, the ray acted defensively as is within it's DNA, and he paid with his life.

Sadly, pitbulls are being bred with no restriction and what is resulting is not the Pitbull that they were meant to be. If you take care and raise that Pitbull with strict obedience, socialisation and understanding you may get a wonderful loving, social dog. But I've experienced that many pitbulls (not all), do start to act more like they were bred to be. Become aggressive towards other animals, and sometimes people (but this is not the norm for a Pitbull) and this is where your obedience which has been made to become second nature to the dog comes into play. A Pitbull needs a strong, understanding owner, who has experience with the breed.

Sadly, in the poorer areas we see the trend of teenagers, coveting pitbulls. It's a "gang mentality"... Look at my big, strong Pitbull... Just like a muscle car... I wonder what they are compensating for?

I've watched young children pulling the ears of puppy pitbulls, to tease them into biting, and true to their DNA, they react. These children have learned this behaviour from their elders and peers 🤔. So it certainly doesn't come as a surprise when a mauling does occur.

You wouldn't leave a loaded gun around children (well, you shouldn't), so don't leave your children unsupervised around an unpredictable power breed.

A 10-year-old boy was mauled to death by two pit bulls in Gelvandale on Monday afternoon.

In the last few years, I’ve watched “dog culture” explode into a phenomenon I’d never seen as an early dog trainer. When I first started training dogs, people didn’t come to me with requests for their dogs to be able to handle things and expectations we put on them so heavily today. Nowadays, it’s amazing what we ask of our dogs because of this culture that emerged. And then we wonder why dogs are going downhill behaviorally so quickly.

1. Dog “groups” where people get together with dogs on leash and do activities and social events. Including birthday parties, Halloween parties, etc etc

2. Dog daycares where dogs are kept in large groups to play

3. Dog parks where humans AND dogs interact in groups

4. Behaviors like perfect heel on leash, sit stays on beds, ignoring environmental enticement in the name of “training”

Then there’s dog sports, dog classes, therapy dog work, service dog work, dog shows, trail walks, public outings, restaurants, breweries, and farmers markets and parades and town days and family over (with their dog) for every holiday and apartment complexes and car rides and pet stores and all these places we’ve been made to believe dogs SHOULD go and should WANT to go to and if they don’t then you need to do more and more work with them and help them like it and if you don’t then you aren’t fulfilling them or meeting their needs and your dog isn’t happy and you are failing or they just haven’t been raised right.

Please. Take a breath.

For 20,000 years dogs existed beside us doing none of that. For 9,000 years they were created for purpose and work, not for pets (with the exception of a few toy breeds) We didn’t expect ANY OF THIS during that time unless they were designed and created for it: now it’s what we want all the time. From all dogs. That’s not fair.

Our culture has changed SO much and dogs haven’t had a chance to catch up. We want all this new stuff because it’s part of OUR new culture, but we need to pause and realize it’s not a part of most of theirs. People coming over? Not really what most dogs were created to enjoy. Going new places all the time? Not what most dogs were created to handle. Hanging out in groups and put in costumes and having their pictures taken? Not normal to a dog. Riding calmly in a glass box going past all these distractions at 35mph? Not part of their DNA either.

We would NEVER expect this of any of our other animals either. Why are dogs taking the brunt of this. Because dogs are extremely adaptable and truthfully, they love us so much they will try so so hard to make us happy and do what we ask of them. But, can we for a second stop and think that maybe it’s too much sometimes? Can we please take some accountability for their stress and mental health as part of OUR unrealistic expectations that we’ve been led to believe make for a good dog vs a bad dog? I’m not talking about not working with them and helping them learn to live in todays world. That’s important. I’m talking about taking a step back and having respect for who they are and why they originally ended up with us. I do this all the time before I put any of my dogs in a situation, and that means sometimes I don’t bring them.

If the culture is changing; let’s add human education and understanding of basic canine ethology, body language and respect into it too. It’s only fair to honor the animals who have stood beside us for so so long.

Yes, we had training on Thursday afternoon... 👀 Mayhem though decided a game of "catch me if you can" with the Beeno box was more exciting. Milo and Zola thought so too, although a bit shy at first... Much better than school 😂❤️

Socialisation and group play is such an integral part to raising a well balance companion.
