This mare has been struggling with right front limb lameness for quite a while now. She has seen specialist vets and is in the care of great farriers, but her lameness is still questionable as to where the origin might be.
We were called in to examine this mare and what was found was that her scapula muscle complex as well as the muscles that has a connection between the neck and scapula and the lower neck joints, is quite tight and movements of the scapula and shoulder is restricted and painful. With weekly treatments, her lameness, fitness and performance has improved significantly.
Before the show of this weekend, we applied kinesiotape to her sling muscles and the muscles that are mildly atrophied for support and muscle activation before the competition. This is her first show in a year now again and we will be there to support her all the way with one more treatment before her classes.
See you all at the RGO show! 🤩
To all our friends and followers a long awaited update!
Wow! We have been quite for some time as there has been MAJOR changes! But all is good to go again!
All our clients are aware of this, but earlier this year we had to say goodbye to Nicola Liversage who was an amazing therapist at Rehabit, to her new life in Dubai! How exciting!? She continued to chase her dreams and with that we had to make the decision to relocate the business Namibia where the Rehabit could continue once again with Chrizel (the original owner and therapist).
Chrizel relocated to Namibia early 2023 to persue a life with her now husband, Christiaan Cronje. Now Rehabit is in action again, but only in Namibia, Otjiwarongo district. We are thrilled to be working with Elvira's Veterinary Practice and have some exciting ideas for growth of this business, so keep an eye out!
The email address is still [email protected] but the new number that is available for Whatsapp is +264 81 563 2985
Our website is www.rehabitvetphysio.co.za (error in advert), but the website is still being updated!
We are looking forward into making a difference in the wellbeing and comfort of animals in Namibia! 🇳🇦

How adorable is this 4 week old puppy🥹
This is a fantastic example of how swimming can help dogs!
Shared from Southern Canine Imaging UK
"Today we had a 1.5 year old dog return to the clinic to x-ray his hips again. 6 months ago, we x-rayed him and gave the owner the advice to have intense hydrotherapy with him for 6 months to encourage the hip to tighten into the socket. We advised her to come back after 6 months to see the improvement. It was great to see the reward the owner got from all her hard work and effort"
The photos were taken 6 months apart and you can see noticeable improvement.
Case update - showing more wonders of LASER, taping and controlled exercise.
This foal started rehab 5 weeks post distal check ligament desmotomy due to Flexural contracture. Photo on the right was taken on the first session post surgery, photo on the left was taken on the fourth session with marked decrease in swelling.
Treatments involved Laser, cross fibre massage, taping, stretches with toe gradually elevated, and gradual hill work and of course extremely compliant owner.

Flexural limb deformities in equines 🐴
There are 3 types of deformities:
1) Club foot
2) Fetlock flexural deformity
3) Carpal contracture
The case above is a type 2, fetlock flexural deformity. The aetiology of this type involves the contracture of the Superficial Digital flexor tendon. The pathophysiology for the contracture development is either congenital, that occur in new-born foals and acquired that develop at a later stage in a growing foal. Acquired flexural contractures can develop due to an acute acceleration in growth from excess energy or an imbalance in minerals (especially Calcium to Phosphorus ratio) in their nutrition. The other is as a result of the body’s protective defence mechanism or reflex to either injury or pain in any of the joints the musculotendinous unit influences, or injury/pain to the muscle/tendon itself. Due to the contracture itself being painful the body will respond even more to cause further contracture ending in a viscous cycle of pain and contraction.
Looking at the anatomy of the second picture the Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon is illustrated in yellow. Due to the attachment of this musculotendinous unit, it is visible on the radiograph (third) image how the fetlock and pastern joint is pulled in a flexed position, but the Distal Inter-Phalangeal (coffin) joint stays in extension.
In essence conservative treatment would be as follow:
1) If the development is due to incorrect nutrition, adjust the correct caloric intake and mineral balance after consulting with a veterinary professional for recommendations
2) If it is due to injury or muscle dysfunction, consult a veterinary professional to evaluate the primary pathology and make the appropriate treatment plan.
3) Once the primary cause can be addressed the focus to manage this deformity is to reduce pain in the muscle-tendon unit and promote relaxation with heat therapy, massaging, gentle stretching (demonstrated by a veterinary professional) and slow and low-impact exercises.
*In this case the addition of kinesiology taping with the muscle relaxation application technique was performed as seen in the first image.
Meet Meleck!
Or as we know him "2019 Pippy c**t" from when Chrizel worked on him.
Meleck was introduced to us before he went to the 2yr old sales in 2021 with a 3 month history of frontlimb lameness that the vets have been trying to diagnose with multiple diagnostic techniques, but couldn't find anything significant of why he is lame. His owner thought to try everything at least and that was when he contacted us.
Chrizel treated Meleck for 1 month intensely before the sales for lower neck and shoulder attachment tightness and pain which could have been the reason for his lameness and may have been as a result of his rapid growth in prepping for the sales. Meleck's lameness decreased and he was sound at the sales! He sold for a great price and ever since the breeder has been keeping us up to date with his progress. Meleck has now won his 3rd race in a row!! 🏆🥇🥳
We are extremely proud that we could've given this horse a second chance and that there are owners willing to give physiotherapy the chance to make that change, even when they are still so young! Thank you Riverton Stud for being such loyal clients! This horse is not our first success story from this farm 💪😃

🐎🩺Compensatory Patterns - The Road to Lameness and Performance Issues
🐴🗝Being able to recognize abnormal gaits in our horses is part of any preventative program that looks to enhance long term health and performance.
❗BUT, this area of horse care is very poorly understood, dismissed or ignored when a horse is still rideable to the satisfaction of the rider.
🛑☣☢🚦Compensatory patterns can be very subtle and sometimes not really noticeable in the beginning stages, which is why it is SO, SO important to factor in signals from our horses.
✨How does your horse react to being haltered?
✨How does your horse react to being groomed, tacked up?
✨How does your horse act at the mounting block?
✨How does you horse act when you ask them to move forward?
🛑🐴😢If you don't notice or dismiss behavioral cues from your horse, then you are potentially heading down the road to lameness, poor performance and a very unhappy horse!
👩🎓🐎🩺Underlying contributing factors to compensatory patterns are many, but all add up and increase in severity over time if not addressed early on.
🌍🗺Saddle fit, rider posture, hoof balance, rider skill, tension, anxiety etc., all potential contributors to this slippery slope.
👩🎓🐎🧘♀️Understanding how the pieces of the puzzle fit together, creating protocols that develop healthy horse and rider partnerships is what we offer in our membership program and online courses.
🕗⌛📅If you willing to put in the time, have the patience and a primary commitment to the long term health of your horse, then start finding the pieces and the big picture.

Meet the new team member, Nicola! As from the 5th of December, Nicola will start as a full time vet physio here at Rehabit 😃 We are very excited to start a journey together and we know that she will do her utmost best to care for our patients! Below is a few words from Nicola to introduce herself:
Hi! I'm Nicola Liversage, a qualified veterinary physiotherapist that completed my studies in 2022 at Equine-Librium college in Plettenberg Bay. I'm originally from Limpopo, but grew fond of the Western Cape during my studies. My love for animals started since the day I can remember. I've chosen this profession, because it suites my passion best to improve animals' well-being and being hands on involved in their quality of life. Feedback I've received frequently was that I'm very compassionate and gentle when working with them and take their best interest at heart. I will be joining the Rehabit team servicing from Swellendam up to Worcester area, but not limited to. I look forward to add value to both you and your fur companion's life as far as possible.

Is it already spring!? It's time to work on those summer bodies💪 Walking over cavalleti poles to work those muscles and coordination. Adding the ramp with the cavalletis challenges the core muscles to stabilise the whole body, improving the coordination of the limbs during movement. At the end of the video, this sweet pooch demands more😋
Kommetdieding, the new addition to the stallions at @klawervlei_stud , enjoying his treatment🥱 in prep for his first breeding season. May he have many successes in his offspring🏇
This is sweet Susan She has been referred to us by Robertson Animal Clinic for suspected Carpal sprain as no joint or bony abnormalities were found on x-rays. We're going to target treatments on controlling inflammation to prevent destruction of soft tissue and joint cartilage, passive mobilisations of the joint to prevent stiffness, and controlled exercises to prevent muscle-tendon unit atrophy, tightening and loss of proprioception🏋♀️ What a lovely girl to work with, and you can see the natural sparkle in her eyes🤩 #vetrehabilitation#airedaleterrier#carpus#kinesiologytaping#lasertherapy#stability
Meet Luke 🐶 He is a gorgeous 1 year old Black Russian Terrier. Luke was the smallest pup of his litter and had some complications during the birth process. Due to the complications, he is underdeveloped in his nervous system and a bit of a special needs doggo💚 Luke is coming for regular physiotherapy to work on training his neural motor control and learning. His owners are super compliant with recommendations and exercises. Therefore, a significant difference is already observed in Luke's movement and strength. Follow Luke's journey with us🏋♂️🐕

Kito absolutely looooves working with the ball to increase his core strenght 🥰 We not only work on building muscle of his right hind after 2 surgeries in the past year 🙈 but also on his core strength to help him cope better! 💪 To Kito this exercise is very exciting as it involves treats, love and play, all of his favorite things! 😃
CORE EXERCISES 🦸♂️ Kito is our go-to doggo for experimenting with core exercises since he has an amazing core strength that we have built up over the last almost a year! Kito first came for rehabilitation with a dislocated right hip he had learnt to live with as a stray, the dislocation must have happened when he was very young as he was only 6 months old when he got rescued and adopted and was coping fairly well with it, but during the rehabilitation we got concerned especially with the way he used it and eventually he underwent a FHNO surgery. We have been walking the rehab route with Kito all the way and as you can see, besides his right hind doing amazing, his core strength from months and months of hindquarter and core exercises is almost as good as steel! 💪 Kito is always game for anything and he has basically mastered the physioroll, now we moved to the half moon block and it is challenging him a little! We weren't focussing well on the video taking, so we missed the part where he does the same exercise but only with his hind quarters on the half moon block. Next time! WHY core for a dog with a HIND issue? Well, developing a good core stability is always good for any condition. If the core muscles can independently stabilise and move the spine, it leaves the limbs to do their work which is to move the body from point A to B. In the video Kito started off with some side to side movements of the head while he had to stabilise himself and the halfmoon block. After that, with a little help, I continued to lift 1 of his hindlimbs at a time, as you can see he has no problem at all stabilising himself on his right hind. I carefully picked him up to place him back on the ground when I noticed he started getting a bit tired. And let us not forget to mention the cheerleader and crumb cleaner Perdy helping out and standing by the whole time 😁 All of us had a great afternoon!
These are the great things about treating greyhounds 🐶 🦮 They nap in your treatments 🦮 They love the attention 🦮 They are amazing living anatomy examples with defined anatomy landmarks 🦮 They give 150% during exercises 🦮 If you don't have treats, that's fine, they are equally enthusiastic about a toy 🦮 LOVES EXERCISE Kito had a FHNO and is busy building strength and stability of his leg. Here we applied the EMS to his gluteus medius muscle (which can be seen very nicely on Kito working hard) to help with toning of the muscle and help it activate better, this muscle is very important for Kito to ensure stability and good movement of the hip. Afterwards we did some exercises that specifically targets the gluts and hamstrings, and he loves it. He is such a cool guy!
We recently invested in a massage gun and Apollo thoroughly enjoyed the experience also giving us a nice release at the end of the video! We can say with ease that he approves of the device 😂 Apollo is a massive, very handsome boy who is returning to work after an injury. He is doing super well! We left the sound on because we were laughing so much at Apollo and his strange ways it makes the video even better 😂 #veterinaryphysiotherapy #sporthorse #sportsrehabilitation #massagegun #fortheloveofanimals #fortheloveofhorses #funnyhorse
Meet Amico and her amazing owner!! Amico was diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia and one of her exercises that she does at home inbetween physiotherapy sessions is hydrotherapy. Ami is not the average water enthusiastic Labrador and was quite sceptical about the hydro concept, but she is such a lucky dog to have her owner improvising on a life jacket to keep her calm with the sessions. Here Ami is doing her homework so calm and controlled, this is amazing owner compliance!! I only see Ami once a month for a maintenance physio treatment and if it wasn't for her dedicated owners, it would have never been successful on only a monthly basis. Ami feels, walks and moves amazing even if her radiographs suggests the opposite!! Soon we will be posting a little something about Ami's 4-hoofed sister, Bella, who is also such a great success example of teamwork! Thank you Michelle George!! #veterinaryphysiotherapy #hydrotherapy #fortheloveofanimals #therapeuticexercise #mcgregor #elbowdysplasia #labradorretriever #commitment #compliance #waytogo
We love helping where we can 🥰 Here is a short video story of precious Fudge and below a little something from his owner: I just wanted to thank you so much for helping Fudge the way you have. I had no idea that dogs could have physiotherapy and when we did Fudge's xrays and discovered all the issues he had and how much pain he was in, I was absolutely devastated. Many people suggested that I may have to make that dreaded decision to be kinder on Fudge but I was not ready to do that. We love Fudge with all our hearts.. I just felt that it wasn't time to let go of my boy. I was very conflicted and heartsore with having to make such a decision. Luckily our lovely vet (Worcester Animal Clinic) called me a few days after Fudge had his x-rays and explained that the physiotherapist is coming to Worcester and asked if I would like to make an appointment. I jumped at the chance to try and get my baby the help he needed. I am forever so grateful to Chrizel from Rehabit Veterinary Physiotherapy for her hard work and dedication in helping Fudge and all the other animals that she helps. She truly has given my baby boy a second chance at life. I would like to urge all other fur moms and dads to please consider alternative treatments for your animals... Please don't give up on them.. Try physiotherapy if it would suit your pet.. You might just give them a second chance at life... Thank you Chrizel Kind regards Jackie Trevor-Roberts #veterinaryphysiotherapy #pekingese #fortheloveofanimals #worcestersouthafrica #success #forthebetter #changinglives
🐎 Longlining 🐎 Satchmo and his owner is getting a hang of this great form of exercise! The aim of longlining is to create an open environment for the horse to work in a long and low frame, having to carry himself properly. We added an abdominal theraband to encourage abdominal muscle activation which in return will encourage the head to lower automatically. This is an amazing tool to incorporate and train flexibility and stability together, which is ultimately what we expect from of our equines in most disciplines. Working in the correct posture and developing core strength in your horse lowers the risk of back injury/pain and increases the working lifetime of your horse! Satchmo has some trouble with a long back (long loin), making it more difficult for him to lift his back when working than it is for other horses. Longlining is ideal to help him improve his dynamic posture without weight on his back, along with some static core activation exercises he does on seperate occasion. Satchmo also has trouble flexing his neck to the one side, but with longlining, we can play with some flexibility exercises such as figures of 8, weaves, spirals etc. Adding Theraband encourages specific muscle activation and resistance training, which is a great progression! Longlining can be advanced to training straightness, doing pole work, even flying changes at a canter and more! This all takes some time for the owner to learn to do and the horse to understand. All you need is 2 lunge reins, a numnah, bridle, lunge sursingle or a saddle and you are good to go. For more info or if you want us to teach you or help you with longlining, contact us on 079 315 1318 #veterinaryphysiotherapy #therapeuticexercise #fortheloveofanimals #longlining #core #equine #equinedisciplines
Meet Sniffels! One month ago he was, believe it or not, completely paralysed in his hind quarters and also didn't have any bladder control. He had a spastic paralysis of the hind quarters which is a signature sign for intervertrabal disc disease (IVDD), which is what he was diagnosed with. Unfortunately he also had a spastic bladder, meaning that his owner had to learn how to express his bladder as he was unable to urinate himself and his bladder will just continue to fill up. The owner could not afford surgery, but she could luckily have us help her immediately. Sniffels had a total of 4 physiotherapy sessions in one month. He regained his bladder control in the first week. He started taking his first steps in the second week. And by the fourth week he was unstoppable! Our goal was to get him functional again.. Now that he is functional, the owner will continue with home exercises to improve his proprioception and bring him for monthly check ups by our therapist to note any changes the owner might not realise and we can catch it early. In the video below you can see him very happily using his once useless legs! #veterinaryphysiotherapy #fortheloveofanimals #ivdd #yorkshireterrier #happy #robertson #success
