This is a grass clippings Tea, an organic fertilizer I made for my plants.

Grass clippings help add essential nutrients into the soil

Here's how you can make yours.
Place fresh grass clippings in a 5L bucket and the cover with water. Let it sit for five days before use. Dilute one cup of the tea with ten cups of fresh water. Your grass clippings fertilizer is ready!

Chicken manure provides a slow release source of micronutrients and acts as a soil amentment.

Remember to compost fresh manure to avoid burning your plants(fresh manure contains ammonia).

Behind the scenes: Nothing ever gets done! There's always something to fix, or to work on. The chickens need their feed, and water changed everyday. I check on them four times a day. Collect eggs everyday, plant seeds, transplant seedlings and clean the coop.

The yard is dirty, and the dogs need their baths.

There's a lot going on but I wouldn't have it any other way 💯

Keep used teabags and add them to your compost. You can also use the contents of the teabag to make planting medium.

Can you figure it out? If you can, just say "got it". Photo: CTTO

Banana peels are superfood for plants

What you need to do is get a clean empty bottle—I prefer mason jars— put the banana peels inside and fill with water.close the bottle and let it sit for two weeks and voilá! You have yourself a natural organic fertilizer high in n-p-K (potassium)

I recommend cutting the peels, as this helps break them down a bit faster.

I read as much gardening books as I can, but at the end of the day I just do what works for me. I simply take what I need from the advice, adjust it to my needs so it works for me.

After all, this is about me and my garden, there's no standard of perfection. Set your own bar!

Take it easy, backyard farming is not all hard work and no play.

This our new addition to the family. Two blue eggers and a brown egger. A bielefelder rooster(large brown eggs), a crested cream legbar(bright blue eggs) and what I believe to be a Praire bluebell(lays blue eggs).

Soon, I'll be collecting rainbow rainbow eggs

I grow my plants more closely spaced than traditional row methods. What this does, is decrease the amount of land required to grow a given quantity of food.

It reduces the amount of water and fertilizer I use. Because the plants are spaced closely together, they shade out weeds and retain moisture in the soil better.

This will work great for people with little space.

Notice the first class? Do you still remember the benefits of alliums when planted in proximity with fruit trees and nightshades?

Alliums are a family of plants which include onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, and others.

Alliums make great companion plants for plants such as fruit trees and nightshades(tomatoes, capsicum peppers, potatoes, brassicas, and carrots). They are natural repellents for rabbits, slugs, aphids, carrot fly, cabbage loopers, cabbage maggots, cabbage worms, and Japanese beetles.

Thrips which feed on garden pests are attracted to alliums.

(Pictured)
A classic example of companion planting. The smell of onions will ward off carrot root flies while the smell of carrots will ward off onion flies.

WHAT IS COMPANION PLANTING?

Companion planting is a form of polyculture practiced by farmers and gardeners for any number of different reasons, including pest control, pollination, providing habitat for beneficial insects, maximizing space, and to otherwise increase crop productivity.
