Can your dog sit? 🐶Many people are proud to note that their dog can sit at home, or get upset with their dog when they cannot sit at a park when they “know how to sit at home”. There is a common misjudgment that if you teach your dog sit, they must sit under any circumstance. Dogs cannot generalize skills. If you teach your dog to sit in your living room, it does not mean they know how to sit on the beach, let alone your driveway. We have to practice generalization with our dogs, by going back to the basics with our dogs in every new circumstance we encounter in a variety of environments and distractions to develop a well rounded skill. Why teach your dog to sit in all circumstances? Sit is an easy skill that your dog can learn. It is a key skill to use in emergency situations, to assist a reactive dog with desensitization, or be used as an alternate skill when trying to learn off unwanted behaviour. #dogs #positivereinforcementtraining #forcefreedogtraining
How can we reward our dogs?? Give them something they love and makes them feel good! For each dog, this may look like something different! A favourite toy, a tummy rub, or in the case of my Labradors, FOOD!! All these reinforcers help our dogs to learn new skills by paying them in the currency that they want. This will help us increase the likelihood of a wanted behaviour to occur more often. No need for punishment. Talk in a language that your dog understands and help them understand what we expect from them! Positive reinforcers will do the trick! Happy training!! #dogs #dogtraining #positivereinforcement #forcefreetraining
