Animal Welfare in Augrabies

Lady is always ready to greet me when I visit her family in the community. In the beginning, Lady was too afraid to let me pet her but she always wanted to be near me and see what was going on. We noticed she was pregnant when her belly began to grow, and she was HUGE by the time she was ready to give birth.

One day, when I stopped by to visit, I noticed Lady was nowhere to be seen. When I asked about her, they said she was hiding in the bathroom. I checked on her and realized that she was in labor. She had already been in labor for several hours, but nothing was happening and the vet decided she should come in for a checkup. She received a shot to get the puppies moving, and she quickly gave birth to two healthy babies. All was well and moving, so we brought Lady home thinking everything else would continue as normal.

That evening, I called to see how Lady was doing and how many more pups were born. None were born and Lady looked quite uncomfortable still. I rushed her back to the vet where she underwent an emergency cesarean section. Turns out the last three pups were entirely too large for her to birth naturally! Thankfully, all the pups were healthy and Lady was sterilized in the process.

Lady’s situation highlighted the difficulty pets in lower-income households face in remote areas. Had Lady not received assistance, she may well have ended up losing the pups and possibly even her own life if she were unable to birth the pups on her own. Her family didn’t have the money to pay for the taxi and veterinarian services on their own.
