Correct care for your grooming brushes and Utsumi combs to ensure the longest life for it is often overlooked. This is especially so when buying quality, the expectation is that nothing should ever happen to it and it should always give a perfect result but equally important is how it is used, how it is cleaned and in what condition it is stored in. It can about last a lifetime with proper care and correct usage.
Hair can contain oils and debris sitting in brushes and on combs that can break down the rubber in a brush and cause oxidation on metal combs. If you store your Utsumi comb away without having it cleaned and dried properly the Utsumi leather case will also become a dirty and moist area which is not good for a storing area for your comb. Rather make a point of always storing your comb in a clean and dry condition. You might have noticed me at the shows always having a very soft plush dust cloth I always have on hand to clean my display combs before storing it away in its comb leather cases. Do not let combs lie on top of each other or stored away on top of each other as it can scratch the surface.
To remove the loose hair stuck in your brush or comb: Avoid using a comb to remove loose hair from your brush, since it can damage the brush and comb. Use your comb for the purpose it was designed and intended for and that is to comb hair. A soft bristle brush can rather be used to help remove loose hair stuck in the brush and your fingers would work for removing loose hair stuck in your comb to start the cleaning process of it (avoid trying to scratch it with your nails). A high velocity drier set on cool air can also be used after combing to help remove the loose hair from your comb.
Not only do dog and cat coats need to be dried properly after a wash to prevent issues - it is an essential step to your brushes and combs as well! Storing your comb when it is still damp/wet can cause rust on the comb and/or mold growing on it which is no good. To sanitise/disinfect: Rubbing alcohol and Listerine mouthwash containing alcohol resulting in faster drying time which is beneficial for drying your brushes and combs after giving it one to two sprays with these. You can wipe it off with a clean dry soft cloth like the eyeglass's soft cloth or the extremely soft plush dust wipe cloths. You can place your combs and brushes on a towel to dry or use your pet drier to blow dry it with low/room temperature for 5-10 minutes to completely dry it. Store your cleaned/disinfected and properly dried Utsumi comb in the Utsumi leather case, making very sure it is not damp/wet when storing it.
As a hygienic tip: If you choose to lend your comb out to friends/groomers just remember to give it a cleaning and disinfection prior to using it on your dog’s/cat’s coat to prevent possible debris/dandruff/bacteria transferred to the coats.
To wash your comb, you can use a suitable basic cleaning pet shampoo diluted in warm water, then rinse it off well with warm clean water.
Thorough drying is key after correct cleaning and/or disinfecting your combs prior to storing them away.
Keep them beautiful, for effective grooming and in turn make their coats look more beautiful!
