It seems only appropriate that the day after a new study was published about the Cape's great whites, the orcas return to Cape Town.

BARK COLLARS / VIBRATION COLLARS

Did you know that a bark collar, which is set to either vibrate or shock your dog every time they bark, doesn't actually work the way you're wanting it to.

Did you know that these collars get triggered with any loud noise? This includes other dogs barking, children squealing or shouting and even you shouting.

I walked passed a house the other day with two small dogs. One being a Jack Russell, the other another terrier mix. The Jack Russell has a bark collar on which kept shocking and jolting this poor dog while he wasn't barking, his friend to the left of him was barking. This dog was completely shut down, and kept twitching his head in pain every time the collar went off. To make matters even worse, he barked after the shock each time, probably out of pain.

Even if bark collars are left on vibrate, vibrations are still punishers and still cause stress. If vibrations didn't affect your dog negatively, they simply wouldn't work.

Please... if your dog is barking constantly, contact a force free behaviourist to help you. Punishing a dog for barking is inhumane. Dogs bark to communicate, which is a natural instinct for them. Find out what they are communicating, the reason behind it and your barking will get better.

When it comes to deaf dogs, a lot of trainers advocate the use of vibration collars to train deaf dogs, especially for correction purposes, again, I confidently say it is possible to train a deaf dog using force free methods.

*Appeal to the public for Help for Rambo*
Can you assist us to improve Rambo’s living conditions?
Here is his story: Mr Mostert, an unemployed elderly man whose only income is his SASSA pensioner’s grant, contacted the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for assistance after some youngsters threw stones at Rambo in the street. Rambo was roaming the streets as Mr Mostert does not have fencing. We collected Rambo and brought him in to our Hospital for treatment for a fractured leg.

Mr Mostert is poor and lives in an impoverished area, and spent the last of his savings money to buy a wooden kennel for Rambo to sleep in. He is terrified that Rambo will fall victim to abuse once again if he returns home, as he does not have a fence and of course, he would never want to keep Rambo on a chain (The SPCA will also not release Rambo if he is going to be kept on a chain).

At the moment Mr Mostert who misses Rambo dearly, walks to the SPCA from Eerste River to come and visit him while he is on the road to recovery.

We are now appealing to the public to assist us to improve the living conditions of Rambo so he can return home with Mr Mostert. Can you help?

We need:
- at least 20 meters of wire fencing and
- 20 wooden poles to plant into the ground.
- A few bags of cement to cement the poles to the ground.

[NOTICE] The Cape of Good Hope SPCA continues to assist with beached seals across the various beaches within the City of Cape Town. Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities to find the cause of all the deaths. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is also conducting post-mortems at our own expense to speed up the process.

Should you encounter a beached seal that looks underweight, injured and / or non-responsive, please contact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Department on 021 700 4158/9 or 083 326 1604 or send an email to [email protected] with a photo or video and send the pin location of where the seal is.

We please ask that you do not approach the seals and / or attempt to place them back into the water. Placing an exhausted seal back into the water can cause the seal to drown or go into shock.

Seals are very dangerous and can cause severe damage when they bite or attack to protect themselves.

THIS IS A PSA

Puppies bite. They bite a lot. They bite hard. Their teeth are sharp. You might bleed. It might seem relentless.

Scaring the pants off them by yelling, pinning, shoving or shouting will not only do precisely zero, it will potentially create a fearful adult dog.

Puppies bite more when;
They are tired
They are hungry
They are bored
They are overstimulated
They are teething

Read that again. They bite MORE when they are the above. They will also bite when they are absolutely fine. They are dogs not dolls.

Be compassionate not scary. They will grow out of it but only if you teach them a good alternative. Trade for toys. Use a pen or a crate. Teach calmness. Reward gentle interactions. Grit your own teeth and ride it out while reinforcing good stuff and proactively managing bad stuff.

Be proactive when you know biting happens like after some play, when excitement goes up, when they are overtired (7-9pm witching hour anyone?) and give them a good chew or help them settle, or channel that energy into some training.

It does get better basically. Don’t panic. Most puppy biting isn’t aggression. Be CONSISTENT and PROACTIVE and expect more than a few bites along the way.

Signed,
Aalto the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (aka the ginger shark)
