From Dog Devotee to Cat Convert: How Felines Quietly Changed My Life
I was never a cat person.
Dogs were always part of my life — loyal, bouncy, ever-loving companions. I never really paid much attention to cats. I didn’t dislike them; I just didn’t understand them. That all changed in the most unexpected and healing ways.
It started with Ozzy — my very first animal communication “patient.” Ozzy cracked something open in me. Through our animal counseling sessions, I spoke with him deeply, tuning in to his thoughts, emotions, and silent wisdom. I thought I was there to help him… but in truth, he helped me too. He showed me the beauty of the feline mind — their sensitivity, their intelligence, their soulfulness.
After Ozzy, more cats came into my life through my work as an animal communicator — Foxy, Blaze, Chilli, and so many more unforgettable feline souls. Their human guardians sought guidance: some needed help with emotional or behavioural issues, others wanted to connect with their cats who had passed on, and many simply longed to understand their companions on a deeper level.
Then there’s Habibi — the cat who, while I was pet-sitting, decided eyelid-licking at 2am was a valid form of affection. Strange? Yes. But undeniably adorable. Every cat seemed to bring a unique flavour of love, mischief, or healing into my life.
And I’ll never forget Eli — whose name means “My God is High.” On a night when trauma pulsed through my body and I truly thought I might not make it, Eli climbed onto my chest and stayed there. He purred gently for what felt like forever, grounding me, holding me in his quiet feline way. It was a sacred kind of comfort — one I’ll always carry with me.
Most recently, there’s Katti. A stray who wandered into the life of someone I care deeply about — and transformed his world. After a time of hardship and uncertainty, she brought with her love, joy, kindness, and a gentle stability. And somehow, she gifted that same healing to me. Every time I visit, she greets me with the sweetest meow, a warm purr, and more cuddles than you’d think possible. She is, quite simply, magic.
Working at Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter in Khayelitsha has deepened my connection to cats even further. Every time I visit, I carve out time to be with the shelter cats — each one patiently waiting for a home, each one overflowing with love to give.
And now, I can officially say — I’m a cat person. (Still a dog person too, of course.)
I dream of the day I move into a house of my own, so I can finally adopt a cat (or two) and give them the loving forever home they deserve.
Thank you, kitties, for sharing your beauty, your healing, and your quiet magic with me.
