Give your horse the royal treatment! 👑 Deep cleaning isn't an everyday thing, but when it's bath time, it's time to shine! While daily grooming routines focus on removing dirt, sweat, and loose hair, full-body bathing is reserved for specific occasions, like post-mud-wallowing or pre-show prep.

Here's a super important tip: if your horse is covered in wet mud, don't try to scrub it off right away! That can irritate their skin. Instead, be patient and let the mud dry completely. Once it's dry, it'll be much easier to brush off. Then, you can give your horse a good rinse to get rid of any leftover dirt.

Products used in a horse deep clean should be specifically formulated for equine use. Human shampoos or soaps can disrupt the delicate balance of a horse's skin and coat, leading to dryness, irritation, or other dermatological issues. Always opt for horse-safe products designed to cleanse effectively while preserving the natural oils that protect the skin.

DO HORSES HAVE A LOVE LANGUAGE? 💘🐴
While horses can't express love in the same way humans do with words, they absolutely show affection and form strong bonds with their favorite people in subtle ways that demonstrate trust and fondness.

Here are some telltale signs a horse loves you:

Gentle Nuzzling: a soft nudge or head rub is a horse's way of saying "I like you" and often a request for attention.

Following You Around: a horse that enjoys your company might follow you as you move, showing they want to stay close.

Relaxed Body Language: a horse comfortable around you will have a relaxed posture, soft eyes, and a lowered head. Closing their eyes while you groom them is a sign of deep trust.

Vocalization: some horses will nicker or whinny softly when they see or hear you, particularly if they associate you with positive experiences like feeding or riding.

Just like people, every horse is an individual, so they might express their affection in slightly different ways. The most important thing is to pay attention to their body language and learn what makes them comfortable and happy.

Feeding your horse grain is an important part of their diet, and it is very important to do it correctly. Horses have a relatively small stomach compared to their size, and feeding them large amounts of grain at once can lead to digestive upset and other health problems. Therefore, it's best to split your horse's daily grain ration into two or more smaller feedings. This makes the grain easier to digest and prevents overloading their digestive system.

The maximum amount of grain per feeding should generally not exceed 0.23 kg per 45 kg of the horse's body weight. For example, a 450 kg horse should receive a maximum of 2.25 kg per feeding.

Divide the total daily ration into at least two meals, and even more for horses with specific needs or sensitivities. Feeding your horse at the same time each day also helps regulate their digestive system.

DID YOU KNOW? Horses have an amazing panoramic vision thanks to the placement of their eyes on the sides of their heads. However, this wide field of view comes with a trade-off: horses have two blind spots. One is directly behind them, and the other is right in front of their heads.

This means they can't see the grass they're grazing on or that carrot you're offering! Instead, they rely on their other senses, like smell and touch, to understand their immediate surroundings. They might move their heads around or use their sensitive lips and whiskers to explore what's in front of them.

So, the next time you're interacting with a horse, remember that their view of the world is quite different from ours!

Did you know that a horse's hooves never stop growing? Just like our fingernails and hair, they're made of keratin and grow continuously. To keep their hooves healthy and balanced, they need regular trimming by a farrier. It's also important to ensure horses get enough biotin in their diet to promote strong, healthy hoof growth.

Vitamin B complex plays a crucial role in supporting your horse's energy levels and stamina. These essential vitamins help the body convert food into usable energy. This is particularly important for horses involved in strenuous activities like racing, show jumping, or endurance riding.

When your horse's diet includes sufficient Vitamin B complex, they can experience improved energy production, allowing them to perform at their peak.
Vitamin B complex also contributes to a healthy nervous system, which is vital for proper muscle function and coordination. This ensures that your horse can utilize their energy effectively and maintain balance and control during activity.

For a complete and balanced diet that provides your horse with all the essential vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B complex, consider Protein Feeds Horse Feed, available at select stores in Gauteng and North West .

27/01/2025

LESS IS MORE when it comes to feeding your horse 🐴 It's a common misconception that horses need to be fed large meals to stay healthy and strong. In reality, feeding your horse 3 or 4 smaller meals throughout the day can be much more beneficial for their overall health and here is why:

Horses have evolved to graze continuously, so their digestive systems are better suited to small, frequent meals. This helps to prevent digestive upset and colic. Smaller meals also provide a more consistent supply of energy throughout the day, which can help to improve athletic performance and overall well-being. Additionally, feeding large meals can lead to weight gain, which can put your horse at risk for health problems. Smaller meals can help to maintain a healthy weight.

To feed your horse smaller meals, divide your horse's daily ration into 3 or 4 equal meals and feed your horse at regular intervals throughout the day. Make sure your horse has access to plenty of fresh water.

DID YOU KNOW? Horses have a very sensitive sense of taste. They can detect even small changes in the flavour of their food or water. This is why it's important to offer them fresh, clean water and to avoid sudden changes in their diet, which can lead to picky eating habits!

Just like us, horses need strong, healthy muscles to perform at their best. Whether you're a competitive rider or simply enjoy leisurely trail rides maintaining your horse's muscle health is crucial for their overall well-being and performance. And just like humans, horses need a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to support muscle growth and repair.

Consistent exercise, such as lunging, groundwork, and riding, is also essential for building and maintaining muscle mass. It's important to always warm up your horse before exercise and cool them down afterward to prevent injuries and promote muscle recovery. Adequate rest is also essential for muscle repair and growth.

Protein Feeds Horse Feed can be used with great success to feed a competing horse by adding a cube (250ml) of edible corn, sunflower or soya oil) to the recommended daily feed allowance. This approach provides increased energy without the risk of digestive upset associated with excessive grain consumption.

Horses rely heavily on their vision, especially in low-light conditions. Vitamin A plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy eyesight, particularly night vision. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for the production of rhodopsin, a pigment in the retina that's responsible for vision in dim light.

Bringing your horse back into work after a well deserved break requires a thoughtful and gentle approach. Rushing the process can lead to injuries and setbacks. Start slow with short walks and gentle lunging, gradually increasing the duration and intensity. Focus on flexibility with exercises like leg yields and shoulder-fore.

Listen closely to your horse. Pay attention to their energy levels, any signs of stiffness, and their overall attitude. If they seem tired or uncomfortable, reduce the intensity or duration of their work.

Remember, patience is key!

A horse's coat is more than just a pretty exterior – it's a reflection of their overall health. A dull, dry, or patchy coat can signal underlying issues, while a vibrant, shiny coat is a sign of good health and well-being.

Regular grooming plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy horse coat. Here's why:

➡ Daily grooming helps remove dirt, dust, sweat, and dead hair. This prevents skin irritation and allows the skin to breathe properly.

➡ Brushing stimulates blood flow to the skin, promoting healthy skin cell turnover and a shiny coat.

➡ Regular grooming allows you to closely examine your horse's skin for any signs of injury, parasites, or other health problems.

➡ It strengthens the bond between you and your equine partner. These moments of dedicated care provide valuable opportunities for connection and build trust.
