Horses are prey animals, and as such, they are naturally prone to stress. When a horse is stressed, it can affect its eating habits in a number of ways.

One primary way stress manifests in a horse's eating habits is through a decreased appetite. When a horse experiences stress, its body releases cortisol, a hormone that can suppress appetite. This can lead to a noticeable reduction in food intake, potentially resulting in weight loss and other health complications.

Conversely, stress can also lead to increased appetite in some horses. In such cases, the horse may seek comfort and solace in food, leading to overeating and potential weight gain. This excessive food intake can also contribute to digestive issues and other health problems.

A stressed horse may become more particular about the types of food it consumes, developing aversions to certain foods or feed. This can make it challenging to maintain a balanced diet and ensure the horse receives adequate nutrition.

In addition to changes in eating habits, stress can also manifest in various behavioral changes such as aggression, pacing, or other unusual behaviors.

To address stress-related eating issues in horses, it's essential to identify and manage potential stressors. Providing a calm and predictable environment, minimizing sudden changes, and ensuring adequate social interaction can help reduce stress levels. Additionally, consulting with a veterinarian or equine nutritionist can provide guidance on dietary adjustments and supplements to support a horse's nutritional needs during stressful periods.

A balanced omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio is vital for equine health, impacting everything from inflammation to reproductive function. Here is how:
While omega-6s are essential for inflammatory responses, an overabundance can lead to chronic inflammation, contributing to issues like arthritis, allergies, and laminitis. Omega-3s, counteract this by promoting anti-inflammatory effects, supporting joint health, improving coat condition, and enhancing cardiovascular function. Ensuring a diet with a proper omega-3:6 balance, optimizes a horse's overall well-being, promoting a healthier, more comfortable, and active life. 🐎

Protein Feeds Horse Feed is Omega-3:6 balanced to help regulate inflammation and support your horse's overall health and performance.

Not every foal needs creep feeding, and there's no single recipe that works for all. Creep feeding is especially helpful for foals that aren't growing as expected, or when you need to balance their diet with extra vitamins and minerals. Without these micronutrients, foals are at risk of developmental orthopedic diseases, such as osteochondrosis and OCD.

If you decide to creep feed, start around 90 days of age. Some foals might need it sooner, in which case a milk-based creep feed is better than the usual kind. A good rule of thumb is to give foals about 0.45 kg of a concentrate feed made just for growing foals, for each month of their age.

Creep feeding can also make weaning easier. If a foal is used to eating concentrates before weaning, the nutritional transition should be smoother.

Yes, you read that right! Those wonderfully large ears on a donkey aren't just for hearing; they're also a vital part of their communication toolkit. Just like dogs use their tails, donkeys use their ears to express a range of emotions and intentions, both to their fellow donkeys and to us humans

Here are some common ear signals:

👉EARS TO THE SIDE this relaxed position often indicates a donkey is feeling happy, content, and generally comfortable in its surroundings.
👉 EARS PINCHED BACK Be cautious when you see this! Pinched-back ears usually signal anger, frustration, or a clear need for space. It's their way of saying, "Back off!"
👉 EARS PERKED BACK If a donkey's ears are standing tall and perked up, it likely means they're curious or excited about something. They're paying close attention to their environment.
👉 EARS FORWARD this often means focused on something in front of them or behind them. They could be listening intently, or showing focus on a person.

Understanding these ear signals can significantly improve your interactions with donkeys. It allows you to gauge their mood, respect their boundaries, and build a stronger connection. So, next time you're around a donkey, pay close attention to their ears. You might be surprised at how much they're telling you!

It's a common image: a rider rewarding their horse with a sugar cube. While it seems like a harmless treat, regularly giving your horse sugar lumps can actually be detrimental to their health. Here's why:

👉 Sugar causes rapid spikes in blood glucose, leading to increased insulin production

👉 Risk of laminitis a painful hoof condition, especially in horses with metabolic issues

👉 Regular sugar consumption can contribute to metabolic disorders like Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), which can lead to various health problems.

👉 Weight gain and dental problems

While an occasional treat might be acceptable for a healthy horse, moderation is key. Horses with conditions like EMS, insulin resistance, or a history of laminitis should avoid sugar cubes entirely. Prioritizing your horse's long-term health means considering healthier treat alternatives, like apples, celery, bananas or specially formulated horse treats.

Whether competing athletes or beloved paddock pals, we all want our horses to thrive. Did you know a key to their vitality lies in the power of antioxidants? Horses constantly face free radicals, unstable molecules that damage cells. Whilst these radicals are produced naturally, exercise, stress, and environmental factors increase their numbers. Unchecked oxidative stress leads to muscle fatigue, a weakened immune system, and a host of other health issues. Thankfully, antioxidants neutralise these radicals, protecting your horse from cellular damage.

Vitamin E, for instance, is a powerhouse, safeguarding cell membranes and playing a vital role in muscle function and neurological health. Think of it as a shield against the wear and tear of daily life. Selenium works in tandem with Vitamin E, boosting its protective effects and ensuring a robust defence against oxidative stress. Furthermore, minerals like zinc, copper, and manganese, though often overlooked, are also essential cofactors for antioxidant enzymes, enabling them to work effectively.

Protein Feeds Horse Feed is a complete, balanced meal, providing your horse with essential antioxidants they need to thrive and stay healthy

What You Need to Know about Antacids for Horses 👩‍⚕🐴
When considering pH buffers or antacid supplements for your horse, it's essential to prioritize a consultation with a veterinarian. They can accurately diagnose the cause of your horse's discomfort, which might stem from various digestive issues beyond simple acidity, such as ulcers or colic.

Antacids offer temporary neutralization of existing stomach acid, while pH buffers aim to stabilize the digestive tract's pH levels, with varying effectiveness. Using these supplements without professional guidance carries potential risks, including masking serious conditions, adverse interactions with other medications, and disruption of the horse's natural digestive balance. Often, dietary and management adjustments, like frequent forage access and a low-starch diet, prove more beneficial.

28/02/2025

We spend so much time focusing on our horses' fitness, training, and overall well-being, but sometimes, the health of their teeth gets overlooked. Think about it: horses are grazing animals, designed to chew rough forage for hours each day. Their teeth are constantly erupting and wearing down, and without regular maintenance, problems are inevitable.

Benefits of dental health:

✅ Efficient digestion to prevent potentially life-threatening conditions like impaction colic
✅ Nutrient absorption to prevent malnutrition, weight loss, poor body condition, and deficiencies.
✅ Comfort and performance: sharp points, uneven wear, and other dental issues can cause pain and discomfort, leading to head shaking, bit resistance, and decreased performance.
✅ Untreated dental problems can lead to infections, abscesses, and other health complications

What can you do to keep those chompers in good condition?

👉 Schedule regular dental exams with a qualified equine veterinarian or equine dentist.
👉Learn to recognize signs of dental problems, such as dropping feed, excessive salivation, and weight loss.
👉Provide your horse with plenty of forage to encourage natural wear of their teeth.
👉Make sure your horse has a good quality feed, and that it is appropriate for their age and condition.

By prioritizing your horse's dental health, you're not just ensuring their comfort, you're investing in their overall well-being and longevity. A healthy mouth means a happier, healthier horse.

DID YOU KNOW? A newborn foal's first sips of its mother's milk are more than just a meal; they're a lifeline. Unlike humans, foals enter the world with a vulnerable immune system, relying entirely on their mother's initial milk, colostrum, for protection.

This golden liquid is packed with antibodies, giving the foal a crucial boost of passive immunity against infections. Basically a borrowed immune system, that protects it from infections until its own immune system develops.
The foal's gut is able to absorb these antibodies most efficiently within the first 12-24 hours of life. After that, the absorption rate drops significantly.

Beyond immunity, mare's milk delivers the perfect blend of nutrients for rapid growth, from proteins and fats to essential vitamins and minerals. It also plays a key role in establishing a healthy gut, setting the stage for a foal's digestive well-being. Essentially, a mother's milk is the cornerstone of a foal's early health, ensuring a strong start to life.

17/02/2025

Internal parasites are a serious threat to your horse's well-being. They can cause anything from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions like colic, damage the digestive system, and rob your horse of vital nutrients. A solid deworming program is key to protecting your equine friend.

Different deworming medications target different parasites, so it's important to know which ones are common in your area. Your vet can help you choose the most effective products for your horse.

Here's a general deworming guideline:

➡ Foals are especially vulnerable. Deworming every 4-6 weeks during their first year, starting around 2 months old, is often recommended.

➡ Adult horses benefit from deworming every 8-12 weeks. However, some may need more frequent treatment, especially those with a history of parasite issues or those in high-risk environments.

➡ Strategic Deworming: this targeted approach, guided by f***l egg counts (FECs) is performed by your vet and helps prevent resistance to deworming medications. FECs determine the level of parasite infestation, allowing for more precise treatment.

IMPORTANT ‼This information is for general knowledge only. Always consult your veterinarian for a personalized deworming plan tailored to your horse's specific needs and your local parasite situation.

Give your horse the royal treatment! 👑 Deep cleaning isn't an everyday thing, but when it's bath time, it's time to shine! While daily grooming routines focus on removing dirt, sweat, and loose hair, full-body bathing is reserved for specific occasions, like post-mud-wallowing or pre-show prep.

Here's a super important tip: if your horse is covered in wet mud, don't try to scrub it off right away! That can irritate their skin. Instead, be patient and let the mud dry completely. Once it's dry, it'll be much easier to brush off. Then, you can give your horse a good rinse to get rid of any leftover dirt.

Products used in a horse deep clean should be specifically formulated for equine use. Human shampoos or soaps can disrupt the delicate balance of a horse's skin and coat, leading to dryness, irritation, or other dermatological issues. Always opt for horse-safe products designed to cleanse effectively while preserving the natural oils that protect the skin.
