It’s time for our Rescue Hero of the Month feature! Meet 🐾

This is Lucas’ story.

“We moved to Johannesburg in 2018 to start a new life. It was a phase of big life decisions and one of them was always to complete our family by bringing home a dog.

One afternoon, I was going on with my daily ritual of scrolling through posts of dog shelters while constantly contemplating the thought of being a dog parent. I came across the photograph of this black and white wobbly pup and something just pushed me to go visit him.

The next thing I knew, there he was infront of me in a corner with a few other puppies. I thought to myself, ‘Are we really doing this?’ The moment I had him in my arms, there wasn’t anything left to decide. ‘Jack’ was coming home with us.

I remember the person who handed us the adoption form asking, “What happens when you leave the country?” I said “He’s going with us wherever we go to next!” And just like that, he was ours! Jack became Lucas in that very moment and he came home to us.

It’s been over five years since the day his tiny paws set foot in our home. It has been years of joy and immense love; love like I had never known before. He is the soul of our tiny family and as cliche as it might sound, I believe he is the one who found me, rescued me. No matter where we go next, he’ll always be my home.”

It’s time for our Rescue Hero of the Month and this time we’re featuring the Celestial Kitties 🐈🐈‍⬛

This is their story.

“In 2020, we only had 2 rescues, Luna and Aurora. We learnt how to love beyond ourselves and they filled our life with so much joy.

Fast forward to the day of lockdown, as we watched army tanks roll into our neighborhood, we carried our little new bundle of rescue joy. Little Nova, our first kitten from Cataholics Kitty Shelter. Little did we know that this beautiful, blue-eyed kitten would start a journey of fostering, trapping and working with the amazing people at Cataholics Kitty Shelter for the years since.

We never intended to rescue, but once again, a few weeks into the 2021 lockdown, we drove past some kittens playing on the side of the road. Gordon screamed “kittens!”, immediately pulling over, abruptly ending any plans we had. Thus began a week long journey of trapping 6 kittens and their very spicy mother (aptly named the William Nicol Crew as they were found at a petrol station on the same road!). They had been dumped with their carrier amongst the bins. With the help and advice of amazing fosters, we fostered the six kittens till they were adopted.

Since then, we have rescued, trapped and homed nearly 100 kittens, teens and adult cats. We’ve also somehow managed to grow our resident feline family to NINE cats, and they live a gloriously pampered existence.

If we had one ask for people, it would be to not be a bystander - for humans but most especially for animals, who are vulnerable and voiceless. Make sure you put a tag and collar on your cats if they roam, ensure their vaccinations are done annually and for strays and ferals you come across, be kind and where possible, check if they are fed and healthy. There are many amazing foster and rescue organizations, lend a home or a hand, and if you can spare some coin, please donate.

Fostering has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives - we remain in touch with a lot of our adopters and will continue to treasure the privilege of time with these beautiful furry felines.”
