Puzzle ideas #1 - towels

We humans often think: a towel is a towel. But a towel can make so many different puzzles! Every different shape gives your dog a different experience; he needs to manipulate the towel differently to get to the treats. And when you make the same puzzle with a thicker, thinner, larger or smaller towel the experience changes again!

Examples of puzzles you can make with a towel: scrunch, swirl, waves, roll.

Whatever puzzle you make: start easy and make the puzzle more difficult in steps. Prevent frustration and aim for concentration and relaxation. Always help when your dog gets frustrated.

A basic roadmap you can use:
1. Let your dog sniff the materials first, so he knows where he'll work with. Some dogs need a long sniff, some dogs don't want to sniff at all, let them decide!
2. Put some treats on top of the material, without hiding the treats yet.
3. Make a very easy version of the puzzle you want to make.
For example if you're going to scrunch up a towel: only make a few folds at first and scrunch it up further in steps. Only step up if you're dog is ready for the next step. The process and the sniffing is more important than the result!
