Loose lead walk

As dog mom of a multi-dog household, I have to juggle some balls 😉 to make things work. Kara’s seasons are about 9 months apart and I can spot when she is coming on. Little things like small changes in her behaviour, getting a bit more clinging with me and also a slight change in her colour. Mtassa-Tassa our handsome boy, also starts to pay a lot more attention to her. These, along with my calendar tells me I need to start paying attention. “Manage” is probably the most important word. Believe me a female in season can be a real “tart” and the male is VERY determined. 🐾 As a multi-dog household the other dogs help in our management. Kara and Buddika (spayed) are split off from Mtassa (intact) and Diva (spayed) and this will remain for the entire 4 week period. 🐾 Doors stay closed as I move through the house and rotate the pairs. Me and hubby constantly check with each other which dogs are where. 🐾 During the 4 week period either me or hubby stays at home. Making sure the dogs don’t manage to open a door and have fun with each other. 🐾 When I take one of the pairs out for a walk, I don’t walk past the window of the room where the other pair is, ensuring line of sight does not get them worked up. 🐾 My Ridgies are used to off leash walks on the farm, but for the time that Kara is in her season, she enjoys on-leash sniff walks with me and Buddika. Although her recall is fair, I cannot risk her bounding off and bumping into another male from a neighbouring farm. The instinct in these dogs to mate is just overwhelmingly strong. 🐾 Enrichment is one of the tools in my management kit. I’m lucky that I can close the gate at the swimming pool and there is enough space so I can practice “tricks” with Kara. It helps a lot to relieve her boredom. We also do a lot indoors. 🐾 When Kara goes outside she wears her @dogslife_sa harness and a @rogzwhq leash. * I am not a vet or a animal behaviour expert. This is just how we mana

Me and Hubby live with 6 Rhodesian Ridgebacks on a Farm. And after I’ve said that, you can pretty much make up your own story from there. Because anything is possible living with 6 Ridgebacks.

One of the challenges of Ridgeback parents is that these hounds are very smart and strong. They were, after all bred on the wagon trail over many years, to assist with the hunt and to protect their pack and to make independent decisions in order to survive. Secretly we call them Lion Dogs. You will often hear it said that a Ridgeback can be stubborn. Of course they think about every instruction, and if they think the human is giving daft instructions, they will pretty much treat it with the contempt that it deserves.

Now let’s fast forward to the modern day. The lives of Ridgebacks have changed, in that they no longer have to apply their wits to survive. For that they have trained us humans very well to deliver in their every need. But they still remain intelligent problem solvers.

So let’s bring in toys, I hear you say. Yay, toys will solve all. Or not? How many Ridgeback parents have told me - 48 hours and the new indestructible toy has been destroyed or The Ridgie is bored with the toy?

Our Quest is to find toys that are durable – okay then, lasting for a couple of weeks at least, also challenging their minds, getting them to think and of course to have fun. In no way do I have the answer, but the 6 Ridgebacks and The Human are going to have so much fun finding and testing great toys. The toys will also feature in The Dog Boxes.

Of course Ridgebacks, although aloof with strangers at first, once they had a good old crotch sniff of said stranger, are pretty sociable dogs and loves all their friends, both human and canine. So our boxes are not just for Ridgebacks, but all dogs.

We will take it slow and start with boxes for our bigger doggie friends first. But we would really like to include all our Fur-friends and will ask for lots of feedback from The Dog Box customers, so that we can make sure to get a good box that suits you. The Dog Box will of course include treats. Ridgebacks after all are totally food driven, so a box with no treats will be treated with some disdain. The Human is a bit funny about feeding sugary treats, so we only source healthy treats for The Dog Boxes.

The Human is truly excited about em-barking on this new adventure and the Ridgebacks are pretty laid back about the whole thing, until they get to taste the treats of course, then it’s all noses aboard.
