I (Suné) just want to share something of today's race. I think it's important to also share the bad experiences, as this journey is definitely not always just about smiles after successful early morning long runs!
Melissa and I were very excited about today's race, and this was a big one for us, as we wanted to better our time for the Comrades, to be in a better batch for startoff. Melissa were struggling with a sore foot recently, but she had that under control, so nothing could stop us! So we thought.
The race went well, we were on track and taking our nutrition in time. After about an hour and a half in, I started feeling dizzy and drained, and I couldn't understand why, because I kept hydrated and I took my supplements in time.
Obviously I had no choice but to push through and finish. First of all, I'm not a quitter, second of all, Melissa and I are a team, so we do this together (and if you know both of us personally you'll know we're not quitters)!
Melissa kept me going, she spotted energade (which is something that really helps me and which they unfortunately did not have at the water tables) hawk-eyed.
She did not leave my side (and she did not tell me how pale I was at some stages, which is good, because the human mind can play around with you, if you hear how bad you look, you feel sicker).
Towards the end my hamstring started cramping, there were very kind people who assisted, when we got to the next watertable, Melissa rubbed my hammie with DeepHeat and cooled it with ice.
By this time she herself was also not feeling her strongest anymore.
We just kept going! One foot in front of the other!
We finished together, and we did not better our time, but we still finished below the qualifying time!
We think we know what the problem is, I sweat excessively and drink A LOT of water, not replacing enough electrolytes, salt and magnesium. But I will definitely get this sorted!
I was feeling very disappointed in myself after the race, I felt like I did not only let myself down, but also my running partner, because if she did not have to hold back because of me, she would have made a better time. I then read the second image below (which Melissa sent me, reminding me that I must not be so hard on myself) , and I realized that I have so many reasons to be grateful instead!
The moral of the story is, it's hard, it's really hard, it will always be hard, but hard is what makes it so much more worth it in the end! And of course, having THE BEST running buddy! Dankie Melissa Jacobs! ❤️
If there's maybe someone having some doubt about us finishing the Comrades, we can assure you, Melissa and I will fight till the end, unless we break something or can't continue per medical instructions, we will be there, side by side, running for the African Wild Lion! 🦁🏃🏼♀️
