Feeling a little nostalgic today so decided to share this.

The first photo of Stukka and the rather unfortunate looking individual whom she was allocated to. I got Stukka as a gift from a very good friend, immediately following my year as President of Round Table Southern Africa. I got her on Sunday morning, in the first meeting of the new President, hence me sporting the green blazer😂😂😂

Who would have thought that such an incredible bond could develop between us! She truly is a remarkable being and I look back to the day when she looked up at me and must have thought “oh well, hes not ideal, but Ill look after him” very fondly!

New adventures await and we cant wait to share them with you!

Having quite a lot of time on my hands I thought I would dedicate one article solely to dehydration. Having done some research on the topic I came to see just how incredibly dangerous it can be and how quickly things can go from bad to terrible! Now before we go any further, lets clarify what exactl...

As I write this, we have just ended day 7 of the Covid19 Lock down in South Africa. 7 days of what should be a staycation or work from home setup. 21 days is a long time to be cooped up inside, it can lead to conflict between partners, or depression in those who are isolating alone. It can also lead to some confrontations and frustrations with the working dogs in our lives. So, here is an article about five activities which you can try to help your working dog work from home.

Almost like comparing where your business is against the business plan which you set out with originally. Take stock, see what has worked and improve on that and then obviously see what h...

I don’t like snakes. I am scared of them and extremely cautious around them! Pointers are inquisitive, they investigate anything and everything they don’t know, and snakes are no different. Problem is, humans tend to know which one of these reptiles is dangerous and will avoid them…dogs can’t make that distinction. And that is where it gets dangerous, curiosity killed the cat…in this case it may be your dog that doesn’t survive its own inquisitive nature.

http://thatsmypoint.co.za/2019/11/11/the-day-that-i-almost-gave-up/

So, moving to a new house is an incredibly stressful situation for humans and has even been compared to a divorce!  I can safely attest to this, although my move went very smoothly, and we did not tear each other to pieces over small irritations it was still very stressful!  From small administrat...

http://thatsmypoint.co.za/2019/11/08/the-opportunist-strikes/

Dogs are opportunists, its part of their genetic make up.  They have always had to be and will continue to be opportunists because it has been how they have survived for so long.  This is especially true when it comes to food.  And in this instance, Stukkas opportunistic instinct kicked in.  In ...

You talk to your dog with your voice, your facial expression and with your eyes. They are pack animals and a pack has a certain hierarchy. Not negotiable, this is how it goes. Why am I writing about this? Well, because if your dog is not looking at you, he or she is probably not really paying attentions. Much the same in humans, why do we put so much emphasis on eye contact – because we gauge the other persons involvement in what we are communicating this way.

Sometimes we get to learn new things.  Both of us.  And although this is focused on all the things which Stukka gets to learn as she grows up, I also learn things.  One such thing is that Stukka really doesn’t like motorbikes or scooters.  I mean she really doesn’t like them. I came to reali...

The Speckeld pigeon ~ Columba Guinea (Kransduif in Afrikaans). This little chap was sheltering from the wind with a “dont mind me, just doing some morning stretches” kinda attitude😂😂😂😂 Often confused with Rock Pigeons, probably due to the fact that they ocasionally hybridise with the Rock Pigeon.

They are deceptively acrobatic in flight and no amount of Clay Pigeon practice can ever prepare you for the Top-Gun-like manouvering which you see when shooting these! And if its a windy day like we are having today, and you have a go at one going down wind it becomes a situation of give it about 10m lead and hope! We use 12ga 7,5s with low loads...you go through large amounts of ammo on these shoots😉

Still is the most fun that you can have with your clothes on though....

Introducing the smells of game birds to Stukka was a challenge to say the least, and once again I went about it the wrong way. Now, you might be forgiven for thinking that that’s all I seem to do, screw it up. And you wouldn’t be too far from the truth, however, that is one…

http://thatsmypoint.co.za/2019/10/18/getting-some-wingtips-and-a-rather-humorous-retrieve/

At what age, or level of “education” do you introduce real birds to a gun dog?  As with most other things a “one size fits all” solution doesn’t exist.  You will have to gauge how well your dog has developed before doing this.  In our case Stukka is a late developer, she stayed a puppy....

What about loud noises? Will it bother her or will she be ok with them? Check out todays blog post to find out.

http://thatsmypoint.co.za/2019/10/04/loud-noises/

Dogs are generally scared of loud noises.  Some more so than others, but all dogs will get a fright when exposed to a loud noise.  It is an instinct which we all have, and it is there for self-preservation.  No getting around it, no denying it, just fact.  However, when one wants to hunt with…

Commonly referred to in South Africa as the dassie. They weigh between 4 and 5 kilograms in mass, with short ears and tail. They live in areas with....
