Someone was asking about the safety of the Tick and Flea products for dogs with epilepsy. Now I can't find the question so I'm answering here and hopefully the person will see. Yes both the chews and the spray are safe for dogs with epilepsy.

The advantage of using plants as medicine is that a plant has more than one active ingredient. For example, Siberian Ginseng (Eletherococcus senticosus), classified as an adaptogen (a substance that exerts effects on both sick and healthy individuals by ‘correcting’ any dysfunction(s) without producing unwanted side effects), has several molecules with the following adaptogenic effects:

Six compounds show various levels of activity as anti-oxidants,
four show anti-cancer action,
three show hypocholesterolemic activity (reduce cholesterol),
two show immunostimulatory effects,
one has choleretic activity (promotes bile secretion)and

I've been asked previously what group of molecules is MOST important in animal health. And, as with most things health related, that's kind of a dangerous question. Nutrition is broad and relies on variety and freshness and good combinations.

But if I HAD to choose. If it was a question on "Do you want to be a Millionaire", I'd probably answer Omega 3 oils.

These are so often deficient in animal diets, or overpowered by the more obiquitious Omega 6 and 9. And supplementing Omega 3 has such well documented health benefits, too many to list here.

Every now and again we get asked some really interesting questions. Today was one of those days. Seems that there is an arthritic elephant in Zimbabwe that is going to be trying our Rejuven mix. The dose conversion is not as simple as multiplying the horse dose by how much bigger the elephant is. Surface area of the animals also plays a part. So the answer is that an elephant would need about five scoops of Rejuven mix per day. (Just in case you ever need this information...)

A lot of the time, if you want to formulate innovative pet supplements, you have to rely on research done on other species of animals or humans and make an intelligent guess as to whether or not it will work in dogs and cats.

Inositol (or Vitamin B8) in an example of this. Low levels of inositol had been consistently measured in depressed human patients. This led to a group of scientists lead by Joseph Levine to test whether giving patients inositol daily would improve thir symptoms of depression. They tested 39 clinically depressed patients who had been resistant to other forms of anti-depressant for 4 weeks.

Patients in both the inositol and the placebo group were tested using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (a widely used tool to evaluate the extent of depression) before starting and after 4 weeks. Those in the inositol group had a dramatic decrease in their scores compared to those taking the placebo.

This is why we use inositol in our Serenity Formula and our Calming chews.
