What is the purpose of having a dog, if this is how you are keeping them?

People keep dogs for variouse reasons, most of us for companionship, there is nothing like the love of a pet.

Some purely for security. Most of the time these dogs sleep outside, have little to no interaction with people. Their role is purely to be ATD or SOS on ther owners property.

Then you get dogs who are always a part of the family, and they end up loving and protecting their family with their lives.

Then you get this.

What is the purpose for keeping dogs confined in a space like this 24/7?

Loving part of the family - no chance
Protectung the property - no chance

Having a life of misery, being alone in the dark, getting the occasional scraps if you are lucky. No one to show any tipe of affection, love or affection. We ask , what is wrong with people.

Senior Inspector Israel collected these 3 doggies this morning from Glenesk after someone phoned to report dogs being locked up. The owner could not say why he kept the dogs like this, he just did.

They were removed and a warning was issued. Regular checkups will be done to make sure the structure is destroyed and that no other dogs will be placed on the property.

The dogs are now safely in our care.

Our Inspectors got a call saying a dog was lying on the side of the road unable to move.

Upon arrival Senior Inspector Israel saw what can only be discribed as sad. A old boy was lying on the side of the pavement, people walking past him or rather say walking around him, not even paying notice or stopping to see if they can help.

Our Inspector scooped him up and loaded him in the bakkie and brought him back to JSPCA. The boy was very old, in a horrible condition and after an xray we saw he had a fractured spine, making it impossible for the old man to walk.

We think he must have been dumped as it was impossible for him to just be there, or he was possibly bumped by a car which could explain the fractured spine. All we know is this is past sad, for someone to leave a dog on the side of the road, for people to turn a blind eye and simply walk away, when you can clearly see the animal is in distress.

What has happend to the human race?

After he was given some food and water and just shown some compassion, he was humanely put to sleep to end his suffering.

Thank you to the person who phoned us to collect this old boy, you give us hope for the human race as at times we are at a total loss for words.

RIP old boy

Monkey rescued by JSPCA Inspectors

This little guy was rescued by our Inspectors when a concerned member of the community phoned and asked for immediate assistance.

The monkey was caught by a mob who wanted him for muthi. Our Inspectors rushed out and managed to save the monkey who was caught in a cage. It looks like he was in the cage for a few days as they provided food and water, but their intentions were cruel and would not have ended well for this poor little guy if our guys did not turn up. Some community members told us they heard he was caught to be used for muthi in the area. If it was true or not we did not know, all we knew was the animal needed to be removed before it was to late.

He was safely removed and taken to Johannesburg Wildlife Vet.

Thank you to the person who alerted us and helped save this poor animal from a cruel death.

Thank you to the JSPCA Inspectors for always being there, no matter how dangerouse the situation can be at times.

NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS

The life of a SPCA Inspector is not an easy one.

While most of us are at home now, relaxing after a Sunday lunch, lying on the bed or couch warching tv, Senior Inspector Ronald was called out to collect a dog that was run over by a car.

And as always the person simply drove away, not stopping to see the devistation they left behind. The poor dog was clinging to life when Inspector Ronald turned up.

And as always our Inspectors are there to help and put an end to the pain caused by humans. Sadly this boy had to be put to sleep due to the severe injuries.

Accidents happen, dogs do run in front of cars - but be a human and stop. Stop to see if you can help or call for help, dont just drive away like a coward. Animals are living, breathing creatures that do not deserve such cruelty.

Sadly this is just another day in the live of a SPCA Inspector.

Your donations help our Inspectors stay on the road to attend to calls where animals have been injured, and in cases like this, left for dead. To die a slow painful death all alone.

Please help us help them by making a small donation.

Remember our old boy that was abandoned outside the hospital about 2 weeks ago?

Today he got adopted!! We are so thankful to Desire Winterbottom for adopting this golden oldie and giving him the loving home he so deserves. Why he was tied up to a fence outside the hospital no one knows, all we know is his owner never came looking for him.

When we advertised his story Desire immediately made contact. She adopted another golden oldie from the JSPCA about 15 years ago and has a special place in her heart for the senior citizens that no one wants.

All we can say is THANK YOU Desire for giving this special boy a loving home!

May you both have many happy years together!!

Our Inspectors got a call that a dog was bumped by a car in Orange Farm. When we arrived members of the public said they saw the dog crossing the road when a car came speeding down the road. The next moment the dog was lying on the side and the car raced away.

They ran to assist the dog but saw he could not move. When we loaded him up and took him back to the SPCA, we immediately xrayed him. Sadly his spine has been crushed and there was nothing we could do for him. Looking at the photo and seeing him "smile" makes it look like he is just fine. Sadly he was unable to move due to the severe injury.

We had gave him some food and water and a soft blanket while he ate, and showed him not all humans are bad. There after he fell asleep peacefully. If you bump any animal or even a child, STOP dont just speed away, showing some compassion will just make a difference. We hope who ever drove away atleast looked in the review mirror, and that that image of what you caused stays with you forever.

RIP boy

Yesterday afternoon we were called out to collect an abandoned dog at the Helen Joseph Hospital who was tied to a fence. Luckily this is a busy spot and someone saw him just standing there, looking very confused.

He is currently in our care, but sadly we not holding hope that anyone is going to come and claim this old half blind boy. In the meantime, we will make him comfortable with lots of food and water and a warm comfy bed.

Our Story

Our History

The Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) was established in 1902 and is one of the largest animal welfare organisations in the country. Our goal is to make sure that all of the animals in our area are safe, healthy and happy.

Our dedicated team works hard to protect animals, to improve animal welfare standards, to educate local communities about animal care, and to re-home stray and abandoned dogs and cats. We also monitor the treatment and well-being of working animals, farm animals and wild animals.
