What a American hunter says about trophies he have done in South Africa and in the states.

I’m amazed at many of the comments. It seems some mistook our page for a professional competition taxidermy page as opposed to a hunting page. Didn’t see that coming but so be it.

My point in this post is simple. What you believe about South African taxidermy or American taxidermy is likely based on ONE or at best a few data points. Yes, some demand highly expensive competition mounts and that’s awesome.

I’m a hunter and want to keep mounts of trophies I’ve taken but have an eye on cost. I think most are a lot like me. You’d like to have your safari captured in taxidermy but don’t want a second bill equivalent to the cost of your safari with unknown quality and price.

We’re honestly here to help. Our group shares information. We work with taxidermist and shippers as well as outfitters to try and find the best and most cost effective means to have nice work done.

As evidenced by some, nice is purely in the eye of the beholder. I get that. I’m sharing a picture of a springbok I had mounted in RSA in 2015. It looks great to me and almost exactly as it did when I took it.

Now as to value, there is no comparison between cost of the right taxidermist in RSA and the U.S. No, I’m not talking about Wildlife Galleries work. I’m comparing the guy near you that does African work in the U.S. as opposed to the guy in RSA that did this mount.

First is cost. In RSA this springbok is under $250 out the door. How about in the U.S.? First is dip and pack/vet treatment for raw materials. That cost is $150-$300, depending on where you have it done. Once home, you’ll need to pay $900-$1100 to have your mount completed. Total cost, depending on dip/treatment and taxidermist you choose, is $1050-$1400.

Now, how about shipping? There’s no such thing as a custom container. They’re all sized to completely fill a shipping container of fixed dimensions and come small, medium, large, and extra large. A springbok hide and skull or a mount will both go in a small box. The cost is identical.

You decide for yourself. If your springbok from your local taxidermist is 4-6 times better than mine such that you can justify the cost as valuable? I’m no expert, but I’m not seeing it.
