AVOID THESE FOODS FOR YOUR PET DURING CHRISTMAS. 🎄 This Christmas season it is important to be mindful of what your pets consume, especially common Christmas foods that may pose a risk to their health. Here's why these specific items should be avoided: 1. Fruit Cake:Many fruit cakes contain raisins or currants, which are highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Additionally, fruit cakes often have alcohol and nuts, which can be harmful as well. Alcohol can lead to ethanol poisoning, and some nuts, like macadamia, are toxic to dogs. 2. Glazed Hams:The high salt and sugar content in glazed hams can be harmful to pets. Too much salt can lead to excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium ion poisoning. The rich, fatty nature of ham can also lead to pancreatitis, a painful and potentially serious inflammation of the pancreas. 3. Chocolate:Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate have higher levels of theobromine and caffeine, making them more dangerous. Ingestion can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, seizures, and even death. 4. Turkey Bones:Cooked bones, especially poultry bones, can easily splinter and cause choking or damage to your pet’s digestive tract. They can also get lodged in the intestines and require surgical removal. Additionally, the rich, fatty skin of turkey can cause pancreatitis. Always keep these and other potentially harmful foods out of reach of your pets and consult your veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic.
