Complete Feeds: The Pros and Cons

When it comes to recommending "complete feeds" to clients, I take a different approach to some... I don't! These feeds claim to provide all your horse needs, including concentrates, vitamins, and minerals, alongside hay or grass.

So why don't I like them? 🤔

🚫 Inappropriate Ingredients: Some complete feeds contain ingredients that may not be suitable for some types of horses or are simply unhealthy. Some feeds list vague ingredients ("cereals", vegetable meal"), which means the cheapest will be used and the formula will change batch to batch. I prioritize your horse's well-being above all else.

📊 Mineral Imbalance Concerns: Upon crunching the numbers, I often find that many complete feeds don't offer a proper mineral balance, even when fed as directed. Your horse's mineral requirements are crucial, and we don't want to compromise on that.

⚖️ Energy and Balance: The biggest issue lies in the inflexibility of adjusting energy intake without impacting the vitamin and mineral balance. Workload and condition changes require varying energy levels, while vitamin and mineral needs stay fairly constant for an individual horse. With a complete feed, you will be changing both, affecting diet quality.

💡 The Solution: Consider feeding "straight" concentrates where required, with a separate mineral supplement that balances your horse's overall diet while allowing more control over energy intake. This way, you can tailor the feed to your horse's specific needs without missing out, or doubling up on essential nutrients.

Understanding how horses develop as they mature

The Stages of Equine Skeletal Development

A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So, a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usually arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life.

A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Some are still happily working but some prefer retirement and an easier life. Often depending on just how hard a life they’ve lived.

A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active.

A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal.

So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up.

A 1-1.5 year old horse is getting their first adult tooth, this happens at 6 years old in a human child.

A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines.

A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 year old horse can start a bit of light work experience to learn the ropes.

A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength.

A 5.5 year old horse has just cut their final adult tooth, this happens at 17 years of age in a human.

A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work.

An 8 year old horse has achieved full fusion of their final growth plates. This happens at 24 years of age in a human. This is the age it is safe to push a horse for their optimal performance.

Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in the failure of many body parts. Joints, spine, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting another year or two at the beginning could give your horse an extra 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy!

A thrilling Derby weekend! Congrats to all that took part 🙂

A NAIL-BITING FINISH AT THE 2023 UAG DERBY!

The SA Derby is always an exciting event on the showjumping calendar, but this year's competition had the audience on the edge of their seats until the last rider cleared the final fence.

There were a few retirements early on and several eliminations. One elimination was the result of a technical error, while many of the other horses did not like the downhill elements: either the balustrades on the slope at number six or the big bank at nine.

Capital Levubu and Bronwyn Meredith Dos Santos gave us our first low score of 8 penalties, having one element of the d**e down and a foot in the water. Shortly afterwards, last year's winners, Dominey Alexander and Athena VI, gave us another 8-fault finish, having number 5 and the planks at the base of the bank down. A few riders later and over halfway through the class, seasoned competitor Jonathan Clarke aboard Lisa William's Pilgrim (with some positive riding at the bank to planks) gave us yet another 8-fault finish. Shortly after that, Tracey Carney and Callaho L'Amour, a full sister to the 1.40m Derby winner Erreplus Callaho Lindor, came home with 8 penalties as well.

Jeanne Korber, who had qualified well, was second last to go aboard Callaho Lexington. The pair had an incredibly confident round, so confident, in fact, that Lexington did one stride from the bank to the planks instead of two! Unfortunately, as a result, the pair rubbed the top plank out of the cups, costing them 4 penalties in an otherwise faultless round.

Last to go was top qualifier Ronnie Healy aboard the late Ronnie Lawrence's Gillian van Orshof. The pair have solidified their relatively new partnership and have been on incredible form. They needed to come home with a clear with less than 3-time penalties to claim the win. The atmosphere was electric as they began their round, and we cannot have been the only ones counting how many jumps they had left to clear as they travelled around. Ronnie and Gillian, as a fitting tribute to Ronnie's mentor, executed a flawless clear to claim a first Derby win for both! Huge congratulations to Ronnie and Gillian and all who took part!

Weighing roughage and concentrate rations using a calibrated, accurate scale is an important factor in a stable management routine - if grooms are dishing up always keep a check that they remember to tare the scale to account for bucket weights, to avoid any mishaps in quantities! ;)

The most critical part of any diet or supplement program is a scale (or two). From weighing hay through to keeping an eye on weight of feed and supplements being fed, a scale is vital to proper nutrition. You don’t need to break the bank with expensive scales - bathroom or luggage scales and possibly even your husband’s fish scale can be used to track hay and feed weights while a simple kitchen scale can track supplement and feed scoop weights.
