Golden Retriever Education
We have in the past tried to educate the public as well as Breeders on responsible, ethical breeding practices through the pages that we created (Protect & Preserve Golden Retrievers in SA as well as Golden Retrievers Puppies in SA). A lot of people have been helped through these pages, but we also received a lot of backlash, lawyers letters, abuse, stalking, harassment because we exposed breeders and the damage they are doing to the breed. I been accused of being jealous of their dogs, breeding lines, not having a life etc. I want to make it clear on my personal Mochavulin Golden Retrievers page that I am a preservation breeder - this means that I breed to ensure that the Breed (the Golden Retriever as a breed) maintains its structure (the way the look) and their temperament (the way they should be). It is very sad to see breeders churn out litter after litter of untested parents & puppies and "goldens" that does not even look like a golden, but rather like it was crossed with either a Maltese or a Border Collie. This is very disheartening because I have a great love and respect for the Breed and love the Golden Retriever breed as they were designed - looks, personality, biddability, cuddle-ability, working ability and just being plain gorgeous teddy-bears.
The general public just wants a puppy - and they want it NOW. They don't want to wait for a breeder that does not breed often (reputable, respective, ethical breeder) because that means waiting from 6 - 12 months and sometimes even 2 years. Sadly, we do not have enough good (preservation) breeders in South Africa, and I have also attempted and tried to work with new breeders to provide them with some information, guidance and what I have learned from my involvement in goldens, starting in 2003. This has mostly been unsuccessful as they have other purposes for breeding, and mostly, sadly its to generate an income.
I am, and will always be an avid advocate for responsible, ethical breeding of Golden Retrievers and will always have strong views and standpoints when it comes to health checks, selection of breeding pairs (mom and dad) as well as the importance of showing. Do I think that I breed the best Golden Retrievers in the country? Definitely not. Do I have problems relating to health and suitable parents (finding the right stud dog for a dam) - oh hell yes! Do I take all the show awards on offer every time? Not even close. Do I hide any of the problems in my lines? Never. Do I continue to breed when problems are identified, in a specific breeding line? No, I don't. I relook, investigate and readjust and try to improve next time around.
So, when I see Eye Certificates like the ones shared below (not my dogs) and know that these breeders have already bred from these dogs (multiple times), I can't help but get angry, upset and just can't understand how any breeder can't spend the R750 for an eye test. These are young breeding dogs, already affected by cataracts.
And when I see breeders list their dogs as "Inherited Clear from ICH Type 2", but omits that both their breeding dogs are actually Affected with ICH Type 1 (PNPLA01) - which means they are producing Affected dogs - yet still continue to breed and don't share this information with their prospective puppy owners. When other breeders does random DNA tests (which is not applicable to Golden Retrievers) and claim them as being "Clear" - it fools the puppy owners into thinking this breeder is responsible because they are doing DNA testing .....of course the dogs will be clear if you test for a disease that is not prevalent in the breed. I can also go test all my Goldens for MDRA1 (Multi drug resistant that mostly affects collie type dogs) and my dogs will also be clear.
I have great sympathy for people wanting to do the right thing, try to do their due diligence by asking the right questions and then being told different things (in fact lies) by breeders - and thinking that they are getting a puppy from a responsible, ethical breeder. Those many breeders who advertise their KUSA membership all over - yet they register the pups with Canine SA. Those breeders that tells puppy owners that ICH is nothing serious (not life threatening) and their vet told them its "nothing" ....PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) that affects Goldens and causes blindness is also not "life threatening" and also "does not cause any pain and discomfort" - but the dog will actually go blind, and they will transfer it onto their puppies.
Then those breeders that claim to "love" the breed and "love to see people enjoy their puppies" and that is why they breed - to give other people the opportunity and privilege to also own a Golden Retriever. We all love the breed, we all love and care for our pups, our dogs (whether they are pets, showdogs or breeding dog) and we build strong, lifelong friendship with our puppy owners. We all enjoy seeing people coming to visit and see their puppies and how they love and adore them and send up photo updates of the pups. But as a breeder, it is your obligation to look further than just "now" and think of what you are doing to the breed in general - the future of the breed. Every Breeder should establish a legacy - and do whatever is humanly possible to breed healthy, well-adjusted Golden Retrievers with the amazing temperament and personality (and looks) that they are known for.
Breeders - there are really NO excuse under the sun not to test your dogs and then NOT breed with those affected by genetic health conditions.
Puppy Owners - please have the patience and take your time (even if that means waiting a bit longer) and stop supporting these breeders that are ruining the breed ....for us, for you and for the future.
