Equine-Librium, founded in 2007 by Ronel van der Sijde, runs a network of veterinary physiotherapy clinics across South Africa. Our team of 18 fully qualified Veterinary Physiotherapists is spread throughout the country, providing essential care for animals. Veterinary Physiotherapists are key members of the Veterinary Health Tea
m, offering crucial therapy as part of standard veterinary care. At Equine-Librium, our therapists focus on evaluating a wide range of neuromusculoskeletal issues, primarily in horses, dogs, and cats. However, we’re also equipped to assist other companion animals and wildlife. Our Veterinary Physiotherapy services cover prevention, recovery, and ongoing maintenance for injuries, trauma, and pathology. Our goal is to enhance animals’ quality of life, performance, and overall well-being. For competition and working animals, our interventions are vital for injury prevention and ongoing maintenance. Likewise, for pets dealing with orthopaedic issues or recovering from surgery, our specialised therapies are essential. At Equine-Librium, we’re dedicated to improving mobility, strength, and fitness in your animals while reducing pain and stiffness. With our extensive experience, qualifications, and advanced equipment, we ensure that your beloved animals receive the best treatment. Veterinary physiotherapists are trained to treat a wide range of conditions in both dogs and horses. Some common conditions they address include:
In Dogs:
Orthopedic Issues: This includes conditions like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament injuries, and patellar luxation. Neurological Disorders: Physiotherapists can help dogs with conditions such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), degenerative myelopathy, and nerve injuries. Osteoarthritis: Physiotherapy techniques can alleviate pain and improve mobility in dogs suffering from arthritis. Soft Tissue Injuries: This includes strains, sprains, and muscle tears, which are common in active or athletic dogs. Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in aiding dogs’ recovery after orthopaedic or soft tissue surgeries, such as cruciate ligament repair or fracture repair. In Horses:
Lameness: Physiotherapists can help diagnose and treat various causes of lameness, including issues with the feet, legs, or spine. Back Pain: Many horses experience back pain due to poor saddle fit, muscle imbalances, or underlying conditions. Physiotherapy techniques can alleviate discomfort and improve back function. Muscle Atrophy: Physiotherapy is used to strengthen and build muscle in horses suffering from muscle wasting due to injury, illness, or lack of exercise. Tendon and Ligament Injuries: Rehabilitation programs designed by physiotherapists help horses recover from tendon and ligament injuries, such as bowed tendons or suspensory ligament strains. Performance Enhancement: Physiotherapy can improve a horse’s performance by addressing biomechanical issues, optimizing movement, and enhancing overall fitness.

🌞🐾 Summer fun can quickly turn dangerous for our furry friends if we’re not careful. Know the signs of heat stroke in dogs and act fast to keep them safe:
🔴 Signs of Heat Stroke:
Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
Drooling or thick, sticky saliva
Bright red or pale gums
Vomiting or diarrhea
Weakness, lethargy, or collapsing
Rapid heart rate
Dizziness or disorientation
🚨 What to Do:
Move your dog to a cool, shaded area.
Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water.
Use damp towels on their body, focusing on the neck, underarms, and paws.
Seek veterinary care immediately—heat stroke is a medical emergency!
Let’s keep our pups safe and hydrated this summer! 🐕💦

🎄🍗 ‘Tis the season to spoil our furry friends, but some festive treats are best left off their menu! Keep your dogs safe this holiday season by avoiding these Christmas foods:
Chocolate 🍫 – Highly toxic, even in small amounts.
Cooked Bones 🍖 – They can splinter and cause internal injuries.
Grapes & Raisins 🍇 – Even a few can cause kidney failure.
Onions, Garlic, & Chives 🧄 – Harmful to red blood cells.
Fatty Meats & Skin 🥓 – Can lead to pancreatitis.
Alcohol & Raw Dough 🍷 – Both are highly toxic.
Xylitol (Artificial Sweeteners) 🍬 – Found in some desserts, can cause a dangerous sugar drop.
Keep their tails wagging with safe treats like dog-friendly biscuits or plain, unseasoned chicken or lamb!

TESTIMONIAL TIME from a VERY special client!
What a satisfying way to end the endurance year at Elim ride on the 30 November
After pregnancy and a very long break, Sanniesguns Portia made her way back into Endurance this year. When the year started Portia showed a very uncomfortable and stiff way of natural carriage, with and without a rider. Together with the correct training from her owner, Anel vd Merwe and magical hands of Mia, Portia's body and soundness only showed an improvement, especially in her core strength and gait action. The pair completed all their rides successfully this year without any restrictions. Pleased to say they ended the year on a high with an 80km, 3rd place standard weight and Portia only getting stronger and more supple through the ride.
Blok Grace is another special mare to mention who started her novice endurance with us in October. Being young, out of work for some time and have an old injury, she has a lot of building and developing to do, but all the potential is there. The last 2 months have showed a transformation of, once again, gait improvement and suppling under the work of Mia, combined with home conditioning gathered from the feed back Mia and Grace gave us. She completed her first 80km Novice ride at Elim, looking and feeling better after the ride than before she started. Owners, Michelle and Amy are super proud! Eager to see the further improvements next year will show.
Mia is an integral part of our endurance team and leisure horses at the yard due to her eagle sharp analytical eyes, professionalism, dedication and adaptability to each individual horse, backed with the vast, knowledgeable skill set of physiotherapy treatments she can provide. Thank you very much for the year Mia!
From all your equine patients.

WHAT IS VETERINARY PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Physiotherapy is a well established scientific based profession with an excellent reputation for evidence-based practice.
More and more people opt for treatment where they can see progressive results, professional teamwork and high levels of care and expertise. Although the clinical signs present in animals with musculoskeletal problems may improve over time, a well-designed physiotherapy rehabilitation program can accelerate the recovery, prevent permanent disability and help to prevent future re-injury.
Animal Physiotherapy Goals:
• Restore, maintain and promote optimal function
• Optimize fitness and performance
• Improve quality of life
• Relieve, recover, prevent and educate
