*Long Post Alert*
This morning, I was approached by someone seeking help to rehome their IG, as they were not allowed to keep it in the Estate where they live. Although I didn’t breed this dog, I always try to assist whenever a puppy is in need. When I asked why they hadn’t contacted the breeder, they expressed concerns that the dog would likely just be used for breeding.
Then, unexpectedly, the conversation took a hostile turn. They started accusing me of being a bad breeder, claiming they had "all the information" from AI and ten other people as proof. I was shocked—this individual had reached out to me for assistance with a dog I didn’t even breed, yet felt entitled to slander me.
I understand that not all breeders uphold ethical standards, and that the well-being of a breed requires dedication and responsibility. However, the unfair criticism and outright hostility we as breeders often face can be truly disheartening. Initially, I hesitated to speak up, but I feel the need to express just how distressing this kind of unwarranted scrutiny can be. The abuse and relentless judgment we endure at times are simply beyond words.
Being a reputable breeder isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifelong devotion, a calling that demands unwavering dedication. It’s sacrificing sleep, pouring over pedigrees, and standing by whelping mothers through exhausting nights. It’s nurturing fragile newborns, ensuring their health, temperament, and future well-being with every decision made. We devote ourselves to preserving integrity in our beloved breeds, shaping generations with care, ethics, and tireless commitment.
Yet, despite our devotion, we are met with misunderstanding, criticism, and outright hostility—painted with the same brush as unethical mass breeders. The emotional toll is profound. Every accusation that distorts our purpose is a wound. Every uninformed judgment chips away at the joy we find in bringing new life into the world. What outsiders fail to see are the sleepless nights spent nursing a struggling pup, the heartbreak when a placement doesn’t work out, and the relentless pursuit of betterment for our dogs—always at great personal sacrifice.
The weight of it all can be crushing. For every moment of fulfillment, there are countless battles—misconceptions, harassment, public shaming—that leave us questioning whether our dedication is truly understood. The truth is, responsible breeders are not just caretakers. We are educators, advocates, and guardians of our breeds, working tirelessly to uphold standards and protect future generations.
This is why the distinction between reputable breeders and unethical ones must be recognized. Behind every ethical breeder stands a heart full of love, knowledge, and sacrifice. Let’s honor that dedication and support those who work selflessly for the well-being of their dogs.
