Horses with long strides or young, unbalanced horses can easily strike their front hooves with their hind hooves. This can result in serious injuries, especially if the horse is shod. They also prevent horses pulling their shoes off- a little side step can pull off a shoe which in turn can result in your horse standing on the loose shoe causing nail pricks, leading to hoof abscesses.
