As 2024 draws to an end, we, at Cat Village, would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone that has supported us during this past year in so many diverse and crucial ways. Without your kindness and generosity, it would not be possible for us to continue to care for all our precious cats. We have had our share of challenges and heartbreaks and whilst there have been some really tough periods to navigate, we remember just how much your kindness, compassion and generosity has carried us through this past year. We embark now into the 2025 journey with renewed energy and positivity. To our sponsors, supporters, followers, friends and families, we wish you and yours, 365 days filled with love, health, happiness, peace and prosperity and may 2025 be a kind and blessed year to you all. CAUTION - PLEASE DON'T GIVE ANIMALS AS GIFTS!
Humans, we live in an "easy come, easy go" society. Once the novelty of something wears off, our species is quick to throw it away. There is a concerning lack of commitment and responsibility when it comes to animal care in SA - and therefore, we beg you - please don't give animals as gifts this holiday season?

To give a living, breathing, feeling, sentient being as a gift, is a 15 year commitment.
In cases of dogs and cats, they require the following:
1. A suitable and safe physical environment
2. A human with the financial ability to afford veterinary care, buy food etc
3. A human who has done the homework on breed considerations and is aware of the effort required (inclusive of steri, vaccs, dewormer, microchip); and
4. A human who truly understands and is ready for a lifetime commitment.

When you get an animal as a gift for someone, you change the psychology that is absolutely crucial in someone doing it themselves. You jump over all the 'readiness steps' and sadly, this too often sets both the animal, and the recipient, up for failure.

Shelters will again see a flood of surrendered young animals in January - and all because they were given as 'gifts' during this holiday season. PLEASE DON'T DO IT!

If you believe that someone is ready, why not take them on an adoption journey where they can actively drive the process, ask the questions, choose a dog or cat that truly talks to their heart, and sign an adoption contract. This is a responsible process.

Thank you for sharing our post and helping us inform, guide and educate our public. Let's respect animal lives enough to step up to the plate in a way that is steady, grounded, and aware.
