Does Rice Deserve a Spot in Your Pet’s Meals 🍚❓

White rice is safe for pets to consume, as it does not cause any toxic effects. However, rice is a carbohydrate with a high glycemic load, which dogs and cats have no biological need for. ❌ Some rice has also been found to be contaminated with arsenic, which is a toxic trace element that accumulates more in rice than other food crops. ⚠️

📌 I don’t recommend adding grains to your pet’s diet “just because,” but if you must add carbs for medical or financial reasons, or to make homemade meals more affordable, remember that most active dogs can tolerate up to 20% starch in their diet without experiencing significant metabolic consequences, so try to limit their carb intake to that amount.

❗❗📢*Urgent situation in /around PMB where State Vet is trying to track down a family that dropped off a puppy at SPCA PMB on Sunday afternoon (14/07).*❗❗📢

We do not know if they live in PMB or were passing through. Is there any way to spread the word via the groups?

*Message from the the State Vet*

‼️Urgent ..Life or Death situation
‼️PLEASE SHARE
Seeking the people who dropped a brown tan puppy off at the SPCA PIETERMARITZBURG on Sunday afternoon 14 July 2024. THE DOG HAD RABIES! Their lives are in imminent danger and they could die of rabies in the next few weeks. They require immediate treatment... please help us find these people... they need to go to the nearest government hospital for free treatment.
The virus enters the body through a bite or contact with saliva from an infected animal.. The puppy was extremely aggressive and probably bit people prior to surrender.... once the virus seats itself in a nerve death is 100%... successful treatment depends on time and they have hours before it is too late.

Please *urgently* contact the *PMB SPCA. 0333869267*

Is raw food right for your dog?

Many believe it’s only suitable for large or working breeds, but at Doggobone, we beg to differ.

Our registered raw meals are balanced, complete and suitable for dogs of ALL sizes and life stages.

In the coming weeks, we will be discussing each of the variants and the nutritional benefits the ingredients have to offer.

Give your pup the nutrition they deserve!🐾

Our darling Bwana.
29 05.2013 - 19.06.2024.
Finally that big heart of yours became too tired to continue beating.
Thank you my "Boo" for 11 years of pure love.
There is a huge gap left in our hearts and home now.
Until we are together again over that Rainbow Bridge one day, my special boy ❤️

Today is Kennel and Cattery chef day!
Preparing a variety of meals for our discerning guests:
Poached chicken breast (dogs and cats)
Stewed chicken hearts, kidneys and livers (dogs and cats)
Stewed lambs heart and liver,
Beef kidneys
Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, sweet potato, spinach and pumpkin stew (dogs)
Chopped assorted veg, cooked oats, quinoa, brown rice, soup veg mix plus chopped raw fruit and nuts for the parrots...
The cooked items for the dogs are topped onto their Hills pellets for those that are kibble fed, as an appetiser.
Needless to say, we nearly always have clean licked bowls at the end of a meal time!
My apologies to my poor hubby who has to do all the washing up this morning 😉

NOTICE TO ALL OUR VALUED CLIENTS:
We will be closing the kennels and cattery for a short break from 01 to 10 June 2024 inclusive.
Looking forward to seeing you all on either side of those dates!

11/04/2024

Did a quick kennel check before bed tonight and felt the first suggestion of winter's approach! Definitely pleasant though after the recent heat and humidity and - how lovely - NO wind so far tonight!

09/04/2024

We will be closing from 01 to 10 June 2024 for a short holiday together. As one of us always remains at the Kennels and Cattery with the animals in our care, we never have the opportunity to go out for breakfast, lunch, shopping, beach time or even a sight seeing drive together, so I decided to close for that period and spend precious time together. Looking forward to seeing all our precious fur clients before and after our little break.

DANGER OF CHOCOLATES
“With easter approaching, make sure your dogs don’t find the easter eggs before you”

Chocolate can be highly toxic to dogs due to the presence of theobromine and caffeine. These substances can cause various symptoms ranging from mild to severe, depending on the amount of chocolate ingested and the size of the dog.
Cocoa powder and dark chocolate are more dangerous than white chocolate. 160g of a dark chocolate can be too much for a 20kg dog but some dogs are also more sensitive to chocolate than others and a smaller amount of chocolate would be dangerous in these animals.
Some symptoms, which can take up to three days to clear, of dogs eating chocolate include:
1. Gastrointestinal upset: Consumption of chocolate can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort in dogs.
2. Hyperactivity and restlessness: The caffeine content in chocolate can cause dogs to become excessively active, restless, or agitated.
3. Increased heart rate and arrhythmias: The theobromine in chocolate can stimulate the heart and lead to elevated heart rates, palpitations, and irregular heart rhythms.
4. Muscle tremors and seizures: Ingestion of large amounts of chocolate can lead to muscle tremors, twitching, and in severe cases, seizures.
5. Elevated body temperature: Dogs may experience an increase in body temperature due to the tremors and convulsions after consuming chocolate, which can be dangerous if not promptly addressed.
6. Cardiac arrest and death: In extreme cases, ingestion of large quantities of chocolate can lead to cardiac arrest and death, particularly in smaller dogs or those with underlying health conditions.

It's important for pet owners to be vigilant, especially around holidays like Easter when chocolate is more prevalent in households. Even small amounts of chocolate can be harmful to dogs, so it's best to keep all chocolate products out of their reach and seek veterinary attention immediately if ingestion occurs.

Poor muscle control, weakness and vomiting are just some symptoms that could arise if your pet accidentally ingests this tree nut, so make sure to always keep it out of their reach. Fortunately, consuming it isn’t fatal, but prevention is still better than cure.
