An update on Mum “Isla” . Unfortunately the bandaging of her leg wound for more than a month has not worked and now a piece of the metatarsal bone is protruding with the risk of bone infection. So she has had to have surgery to remove one of her toes and reconstruct the area. Dr Jansen has even managed to get some skin around the area. She needs bandaging every other day and hopefully this will eventually heal. Her pup “Amber” being a very busy two month old has fractured her leg and is in a splint for a few weeks and should recover perfectly. Both were reunited at our vet after mum’s surgery and were so happy to see each other. The best news is that Mum Isla who was emaciated at 24kgs on arrival has put on 8 kgs and is now at 32kg! Illegal hunting with dogs mostly greyhounds is a crisis. Just this morning we were alerted to 30 dogs and owners caught on a farm in Mpumalanga. We are trying to educate and work with the greyhound owners in downtown Jhb. The hostels are full of greyhounds but access is difficult and dangerous. Greyhound Welfare SA did an outreach with some owners this morning and we hope to make inroads and more meaningful impact with sterilisation being key but hard to achieve with these owners. One particular dog looked very sick and malnourished compared to the other dogs and is now at Blue Bush Animal Clinic It seems at some point her jaw was broken and her teeth are a mess likely the cause of her not being able to eat properly She’s also very anaemic.

We did the early morning school run with the iggies to showcase the breed to the grade 7 Pupils who have an English cycle test about the breed. ❤️ We joined Charl and his wife Carme’ and their beautiful black iggy Nirvana who showed off her impressive ability to understand a multitude of commands while doing yoga like exercises which came about due to problems with her spine and legs. The kids were overjoyed to spend time with Nirvana, Flash and Grysie that loved all the attention. Thanks to the grade 7’s who generously donated tins and bags of dog food for our rescues.

The last of the Iggy Trio brothers, Tucker has finally been homed to Samanta and family. It took 7 months to get him to trust, play, socialise and be touched. The choke chain he arrived with took two months to remove. He joins the lovely iggie Ellie in his new home and has settled very well. All 3 had been taken for euthanasia at only 9 months old but have all successfully been homed to other iggy homes.

We’ve taken in some sad cases recently . A severely emaciated mom and two pups, a female that had to have her back leg amputated, a young smaller frame male from Kzn with severe mange ,a female greyhound cross and the biggest greyhound we have ever seen (Tika) . Mom has a chunk of her foot missing that can’t be stitched so we are doing daily bandage changes. She’s given everything to her very healthy pups that are fat as two little ticks. Mom ( Isla) and the amputee ( Gracie ) and the young male (whip) as well as Tika are ravenous so any help with premium dog food such as hills or royal canin is appreciated to get their weight up and condition better. The young female cross (lucky) was especially sad as all she ever knew since a pup was a home and much love with a young pitbull male. They had to be separated and he has gone to a facility that can deal with bull breeds. Tika was severely emaciated for his size ( as big as a Great Dane ) and only weighed 35kg. Our vet found that he has a problem with his pancreas so he can’t digest food properly so he has been on a supplement that has seen his weight already go up to 42kg. We estimated his goal weight around 50kg when fully covered. These cases have put strain on our finances especially with them all requiring specialist vet care so any help is appreciated.

Our Rocket and Mulan have both been homed. Yay ❤️ We were especially excited for Mulan that has been overlooked for a long time. He joins an elderly Borzoi and Labradors on a large property with Cheryl and Peter. Rocket joins Sarah and Leon and our previous adoptee Khan rescued as a youngster by CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare)

We’ve had two new arrivals as well as two of our existing dogs needing specialist veterinary care in the past three weeks. When Little Paws Big Hearts in Secunda facilitated the surrender of a mother and her two pups from the informal settlement near town, we took a road trip over the weekend to collect them. Mom is severely emaciated and it’s a miracle her two pups are so healthy. She also has a chunk of her foot missing. Little “whip” is a very sweet small hound from Kzn. He was found in Molweni and taken in by Nolesslove who drove him up to us. He has bad mange that is being treated and is having a blood work up and check up. Then a bizarre freak incident when Sophie fractured her jaw while eating seemingly caused by a bad tooth. We ended up at Fourways emergency vets at midnight with her and she was transferred to our vet who wired her jaw which is healing well. Then poor Ketzi had to be admitted when all four limbs suddenly swelled up. The cause is still unknown but the swelling has come down. WE NEED DOG FOOD if anyone can assist for the two new dogs specifically who are in bad condition and need premium food.

We’ve implemented much from the course at our shelter to enrich and assist our dogs awaiting homes. Thanks to Battersea and the incredible team from the academy!

PHOTO of the month! As featured in our 2024 Calendar. Bheka was rescued in Soweto with a badly fractured leg that had been left for a very long time and was living on the streets. He was very relieved when the leg was eventually amputated and now lives out his twilight years in comfort and safety as one of our sanctuary dogs.

Update on Puma : Her amputation surgery went very well. Unfortunately she has really bad skin which suddenly started to tear. Doc shelagh managed to stitch the initial tear but it tore again in the opposite direction of the stitched area and looked really nasty. Caution ; graphic image ! She’s back Blue Bush Animal Clinic

During our sterilisation day on 5th May, dogs were being delivered back to their homes In Newclare. A drunk woman came out of a derelict house and asked to surrender a dog to me. She no longer wanted him. Luckily for him, I picked up that he was sick and in fact he was really sick with Tick bite fever and is recovering at Blue Bush Animal Clinic. He seems to be a daschund cross jack russel and probably around 3 years old. We are trying to find him a new home.
