It's today and we are talking about diabetes in cats as there has been an alarming increase over the past couple years of cats developing diabetes mellitus.
This means the kitty develops the inability to produce enough insulin to balance blood sugar, or glucose levels. Left untreated, it can lead to weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, severe depression, problems with motor function, coma, and even death.
A cat can live a relatively normal life if the diabetes is treated and detected early. So here are a few signs to look out for to ensure you see it early:
1. Increased thirst. If your kitty is drinking more than usual it could be a sign.
2. Increased appetite. Due to the fact that their food cannot supply the fuel their bodies need to function, they tend to eat more than usual.
3. Weight loss. Despite eating a lot, their bodies can't break down the glucose, which means their body weight drops.
If you suspect your kitty has diabetes get them to the vet asap. The vet will test their blood sugar levels and give a diagnosis. If your kitty has diabetes, you will have to keep them on a very controlled diet and probably administer insulin injections depending on the severity of the case.
There is no concrete evidence on why some cats develop diabetes but obesity can be a contributing factor as well as diet so be sure to give your kitty a healthy, balanced diet.
There is unfortunately no cure for diabetes in cats but if managed properly your kitty can still lead a happy life.
Luckily, our have zero sugar and can be given to your kitty even if they do have diabetes.
