TOXIC HOUSEPLANTS AND PETS: AN UPDATE

Most pet owners are already aware of the dangers of certain garden plants to their pets - cycads causing liver failure and avocados causing heart failure after ingestion are two well known examples. But there are many houseplants that also pose significant risks, and with horticultural trends changing constantly it's wise to be informed before bringing home that gorgeous new specimen for the dining room windowsill.

Well known and loved houseplants that are toxic include the following:

Pothos species
Philodendron species
Dieffenbachia species
Asparagus ferns and Bracken ferns (most fern species are pet friendly) Kalanchoes Azaleas Cyclamens Begonia species Daffodils Tulips Hyacinths All lily species - it is worth noting that ALL parts of lily plants are toxic, even the pollen that showers down from the large Amaryllis lily flower has been known to cause irreversible kidney failure in cats when ingested.

Some toxic houseplant species with new trending varieties include Alocasia species (elephant's ears), Crassula ovata (jade plant, NOT indigenous spekboom which is non-toxic), Senecio rowleyanus (string of beads) and Sansevieria trifasciata (mother-in-law's tongue).

Then there's cut flowers. You arrive home one evening to find that stunning bouquet you carefully placed on the coffee table scattered around the room thanks to Moggy and Doggy's afternoon zoomies session - should you be worried? If any flowers have been chewed on, absolutely yes, many popular cut flower varieties are also toxic to pets. These include:

Chysanthemums
Clivias
Lilies (see above)
Strelitzias
Carnations
Dahlias
Hydrangeas
Iris species
Delphiniums
Lavender species
Gypsophila (baby's breath).

Symptoms of houseplant poisoning in pets are many and varied, the most commonly seen are swelling of the face, lips and tongue (sometimes with associated breathing difficulties), vomiting and diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, lethargy or even complete collapse. Symptoms may start almost immediately after contact with the plant or take days to weeks to appear.

So what to do? Bearing in mind that some plant poisonings can be fatal to pets the short answer is don't delay, rather get your pet to the vet immediately to be assessed and treated. It is also recommended to take the plant itself (if possible) or at least a photo of the pot label to aid your vet in identifying the species as this can help speed up the diagnostic and treatment process.
