We often receive a variety of wildlife. We take great pride in preserving the local species where we can. This juvenile Red Wing starling was recently brought to us, its plumage is indicative of a fledgling, usually ready to fly off about 22 days after hatching. A bit of moistened cat/dog food always seems to do the trick. Released a couple of days later, this little one is out and about living their best life!

This sweet little kitten is looking for a home!

Orca, affectionately named for his killer-whale like markings, has the complete opposite nature from his namesake. In fact, he is so sweet that he will even allow you to lie him on his back while giving him attention. He is about 10 weeks old and was originally found in an apartment block with badly peeling paw pads. We are not sure what caused this, but anything from prolonged exposure to a hot pavement or the heat of a car engine could be responsible. Thankfully he is all better, and what he really needs now is a home.

So let us know if you, or anyone you know are looking for a cool little cat to add to thefamily. And, even if you can't help in that way, a share goes further than you think!

Meet Nala, our Pet Star of the month for January!

Nala is just the sweetest little Rottie pup, but last month she was not feeling very well. The main symptom was terrible diarrhoea and her owners brought her in to see us. We ran some tests and found out the reason she wasn’t feeling well – she had a nasty little parasite called coccidia. But what is it?

Coccidia refers to tiny single-celled parasites that live in the intestine wall. While they can be found in cats and dogs of any age, the symptoms tend to be strongest in puppies and kittens. The main way our pets become infected is by ingesting soil or faeces from an animal who is carrying the parasite. This means that pets who come from environments with many other animals (kennels, breeding facilities, etc.) are at the highest risk of getting coccidia. Common symptoms include:

- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Dehydration
- Loss of appetite

In terms of preventative measures, removing animal faeces regularly from your garden is generally effective. However, since Coccidia can be fatal in younger animals when untreated, we also recommend that you ask your veterinarian to perform a faecal test to make sure Coccidia (as well as other parasites) aren't present. That way if your fur baby does have coccidia, treatment can begin as soon as possible, and you can prevent your other animals getting it too.

Thankfully little Nala was all fine and made a strong recovery. With the right medication and an overnight drip she was back to feeling like her old self while the diarrhoea and dehydration went away along with the Coccidia.

Though, Coccidia is more common than you may think. So, if you are concerned about the symptoms listed above, please feel free to contact us anytime. We are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Hello everyone. We are looking for a home for our beautiful little kitten , Gilly 💕. She came in a while ago and she was quite feral. She will need a lot of work and attention , but we do have a hope that she will do a lot better if she is given the chance. Please let us know if anyone is interested and we will arrange for you to meet her.
She is very playful but is just quite shy and doesn't warm up to people quickly. So she needs someone is patient and who will work with her.

Meet our pet start of the month, Archie!

He was diagnosed with the dreaded Parvovirus this December. And, since we see a lot more of it in summer, let’s talk about what exactly Parvovirus is. As the name suggests, it is a virus, but not just any old virus. Parvo is often fatal, it is highly contagious and it is also uniquely resilient. Parvo can survive in the environment for up to 2 years and can be carried on clothes and shoes - making the spread very difficult to stop.

All dogs are susceptible to parvo, particularly unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dogs. Puppies are especially vulnerable. When they are between the ages of 6-20 weeks, the risk of the virus being fatal is at its greatest. Certain breeds appear to be at a higher risk - such as Rottweilers and German Shepards.

The symptoms vary from dog to dog but usually begin with vomiting and diarrhoea (which eventually becomes bloody), loss of appetite, as well as fever and abdominal pain. The persistent vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly lead to dehydration, while infection can lead to septic shock - both can be fatal, particularly in puppies. There is no cure for Parvo, but very intensive supportive treatment and nursing care gives animals which do contract the virus the best chance of survival. Though, even with all available treatment Parvo is often still fatal and since it is so difficult to treat, the most effective way to fight this virus is to prevent its contraction in the first place.

Take little Archie for instance, even though he is one of the lucky ones, he was in hospital for 9 full days on a drip, on antibiotics, on multiple anti-nausea medications and more. He had to have a feeding tube placed for us to get nutrients into him to help his recovery and was monitored very closely by our dedicated doctors and nursing staff 24/7. Luckily Archie fought really hard and had an incredibly dedicated team around him. Not all puppies are so lucky. Which is why the most effective way to fight Parvo is to prevent your dog ever getting it. Vaccinations are the main defence which we can use to protect our fur babies from this terrible virus. But there is a window before a puppy is fully vaccinated in which they are most vulnerable. So, the second-best defence you can employ against this virus is to be careful with your puppy and the environments you expose it to until it is fully vaccinated.

Though, this story has a happy ending. Archie never gave up, and our team was able to save this sweet little fellow. And perhaps his tenacity can create further awareness about this terrible virus. So, well done, Archie! Well done for fighting so hard! Well done for never giving up, and well done to Archie's family for staying positive and being so committed to his recovery!
