EARS is dedicated to a dog that pulled a small group of people together determined to make a difference in the lives of all animals in Greyton, Genadedal, Heuwelkroon, Bosmanskloof and Vorrstekraal. Ears is an angel that comes with fur and four paws, without her this organization would not have come to be.

UPDATE: RIP precious little one - there was too much damage done and she was so weak, struggling to breath and drink, so kinder to let her go 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴🌈

Earlier post:
This poor day or two old foal, Sienna’s baby, was attacked by dogs yesterday down at the dump.

Local boys, Matthew and Junior came to tell me at about 4pm, about a foal who was injured down at the dump… very hurt, shocked and weak. Gershwin Steyn who is always on hand to help, loaded foal into back of Penny’s Bakkie, while Matthew walked mom closely behind Bakkie., safely delivering mom and foal to my garden in greyton!

Poor little one has a very swollen face, some nasty deep wounds and was in shock but made it through the night. Penny and team will come out today to clean poor baby up.

This is the work of roaming / hunting dogs down by the dump area so please be vigilant.

Penny & her team have been busy as always ….the ticks are worse than ever this year and a small herd of horses who live across the river were dipped!

“And another tick tale. This youngster had an Otohematoma caused by ticks. Apparently common in dogs but not so much in horses.

Again, Dr Clarise diagnosed and gave advice. After draining the fluid we applied a pressure bandage to prevent more fluid build up, but no thanks to the owner, who let baby and mom go before we could assess the outcome of our treatment. We have since been informed that baby's ear is fine.”

One of the most frustrating things about this type of welfare work for is making sure these animals are contained, able to be caught and that treatment is completed 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴

Orphaned foal update:

Penny’s message:

“Just a follow up on the orphan foal we transported home from last week's accident on the R406, where the mother had to be put down. She is doing really well and has attached herself to mare Lyla. The owner is thinking of calling her Willow.”

What a relief for us all and thank you for everyone’s concern and care 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴

“Dipping session in Genadendal last Friday. Just getting to catch up. Between meetings, treatments and tragedies it was a very busy week. 21 horses were dipped and 3 with nasty saddle sores treated. Verbal warnings to the youngsters. Roll on our school education programme for the New Year”

It seems I am very technically challenged today and cannot post in comments so here is Whylit after treatment 👏

Community Equine assistance…. Penny has had a very busy week with numerous patients across our valley! Local young mare, Whylit, who is well know to us, was found in a very bad way. Whew we thought that this wouldn't be a good outcome but look at her now after a little help from anti inflammatories. Horses!!! Thank you Penny and her amazing team of guys 🙏🏻❤️🐴 (See comments for Whylit recovery)

Pedro’s 40th birthday party!

So much fun was as we celebrated our oldest donkey, Pedro’s 40th bday yesterday. Kids from Berea Educare and Little Hippo Play School joined the party and were gently introduced to these precious creatures. Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored the party packs - the kids loved them! What a special morning 🙏🏻💗🌸🐴

EARS gelding drive continues… Penny’s message: “ Ian and Wendy from Greyton Twin Rivers Camp have helped the owner of a small herd of horses by giving them a place of safety and care. This young stallion, Blaze, has resisted all attempts at being handled and halter trained until he was badly beaten up by another stallion last week. His poor ego took a huge knock too and he decided that some humans are not so bad after all. While he was in an amenable state it was decided to geld him. Thank you so much to Dr Francois Viljoen Of Caledon Vet Clinic / Dierekliniek for taking him on this morning.” 🙏🏻❤️🐴

Our darling rescue, Tonio spent the night out of his paddock on Saturday evening and was casually relaxing on the lawn the following morning when Penny went up to stables …how gorgeous is he? 🙏🏻❤️🐴 #rescuedonkeys

Sunday smiles …. These little foals are in our care in Greyton. Little black beauty is concerning us at moment as she has a high temperature and is sore again. We think she has joint ills and Penny & team are out twice a day to give her anti-biotics. We are doing all we can for her and in the meantime she has food, love, her mom and friends 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴
