Join A Support Group
Some people prefer to grieve privately, out of the public eye. However, for those who find solace in talking to other people, joining a support group can be helpful. These can be social media-based spaces for grieving or even in-person groups.

Create Physical Memorials
Physical memorials are one of the easiest ways to remember a pet. Paw Print Pet Cremation sends you a bereavement booklet along with the ashes in a beautiful container.

You can put together a memorial photo book & keep their collar & tags hung in a special place of honour in your house. Your family can also create a special place in your backyard with a special flower that blooms year after year for them & you might want to put a plaque with their name on it nearby, so you can go back there & look at it when you are feeling sad.

Even if we only contributed a little - makes you feel good!!!

As 2024 draws to a close we are grateful that we were able to maintain the high standard of care for our rescues. This could not have been achieved without you, our supporters and our very capable staff.

We need to do a special thank you to Dr Bernadette Eales for being such a compassionate, caring and generous veterinarian. We also thank The Avenues Veterinary Hospital in Edenvale for always being willing to hospitalise not only our rescues but also the dogs and cats of Daveyton, their generosity and willingness is not unnoticed.

2024 has brought many challenges along the way. The number of animals needing a place of safety and costs have increased to a point where we were not sure that we could cope. But with your support we did, and we did it well. The additional four play areas have been an absolute blessing. The development of the new property needs to become a priority.

We are proud of our achievements this year. The highest number of rescues in our care at one point was 221. We already have 6 rescues due to be surrendered in the next few weeks. Emigration and financial hardships continue to be the no 1 reason for surrenders. Sadly, the irresponsible breeders don't seem to be aware of the dire situation animal welfare finds itself in and continues to churn out puppies and kittens for their tax-free income. As one purchaser of pug puppy told me it is not her fault that the parents of the puppies and kittens live in less than favourable conditions.

Our Thanda Inja Project with the support of The Marchig Trust who have awarded us two grants in the past few years, has been operational since 2013. We pride ourselves with the true partnership we have with the State Vets and private practice vets who offer their services probono. The need for veterinary care assistance grows year on year. The only way to curb the need is for irresponsible breeders to STOP and for more sterilisation drives to happen. Our thanks to all the rescue organisations who continue to drive sterilisation campaigns.

2025 will bring along its own challenges, sleepless nights, tears in the shower and times of feeling like giving up, but we will persevere for the love of Pugs and give our rescues and those animals that depend on us through our Thanda Inja Project the best care we can.

Thank you to all our supporters in South Africa and around the world and our staff and veterinary support team. We could not do what we do without your support and your words of encouragement.

I wish you and your loved ones a blessed 2025. Together we will save more lives.

HOW TO GRIEVE A PET
As with grieving a loved one, dealing with the loss of a pet takes time. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Recognize That Grief Looks Different For Everyone
Experts often explain grief using the Kübler-Ross model, which outlines five different phases you go through: denial, anger, bargaining, depression & acceptance (some might prefers to use ‘adaptation’ over acceptance: Acceptance is more passive, whereas becoming more adaptive is more active. It lets us ask, ‘What can we still do?')

Still, your journey through these phases can be different, even from one day to the next. There’s no consistent way that you approach grief, denial, anger, bargaining, or any of those phases. Each person moves through these stages at their own unique time & in their own unique way, & they can go back & forth. It’s not a linear phase.

What’s important is that we recognize that people are experiencing these feelings & we support them & guide them in each of these different domains of emotion.
