What has a dogs unwanted behaviour got to do with long nails ❓
The answer really can be everything 🤯❗
For some, this can even be the direct cause.
I get it....this isn't going to be as popular as other posts, but this message is really important.❗
Especially if you have a dog with behavioural issues.
Reactive and/or dogs that exhibit and show aggressive behaviour can have this very issue and it is a contributing factor...or a direct cause.
Within a few minutes of arriving at a clients home and especially if they are reactive, I glance at a dogs claws.
The vast majority of the time they are overgrown and I can see the claws have caused their toes to splay out, the huge amount of tightness and tension in the foot and the way those long claws are causing pain to this dog.
I will explain to this client just how very important it is to keep a dogs claws short.....often I am met with jaws dropped and a statement of " I had no idea !".

What I cant describe in the graphic is when they grow too long and dogs walk on a hard surface and for some (if long enough) any surface... there is enormous pressure and pain from those claws being pushed back up. They cannot sink into the ground.
That pressure/energy has to go somewhere and it is right back up into the toe and paw, but that is often just the start of the issues.
That causes a change in how paws move...that changes how joints move...that changes how hips move.
From a few long claws a dog can be in pain in multiple areas in their body.

They are not like our nails at all.
If we have long nails, no problem....it usually doesn't cause us any issues at all.
For dogs though.... they can be in incredible pain and will NOT show it in ways we may recognise easily....however they certainly DO show it in their behaviour.

"I will just walk more on concrete"....
Concrete walks are usually not enough to wear down long claws as they can grow much faster than they are worn down.
Those same concrete walks can also cause serious pain, the long nails cannot sink into the concrete and the pressure pushes back up forcing toes, feet. joints and hips to walk differently.

The remarkable thing about dogs claws is the nerve/blood supply shrinks back just a little when the claws are cut.
If you have a dog with clear claws you can usually see this as a pinky/red core inside the nail.....DONT cut that.
Trim the claws often enough and that pinky/red core will start to shrink back every time (even if it is a mm)....Over a few weeks or months, THAT is how you get short claws.
If you need help, see a groomer or a veterinarian.
If they are really long you will need multiple visits (if you are unable to do this yourself).
If you have a dog with black claws, get a trusted groomer to do this or show you how and when to stop.

Cutting claws isn't a "cure" for behavioural issues....but the pain associated with them can be a major contributor.

DO DOGS RECOGNISE & PREFER SIMILAR BREEDS?

Full Credit Dogs Disclosed

If you have ever taken your dog out to where there are other dogs, you may have noticed that some dogs are more attracted to particular breeds.

Why is this? Although there is no formal research that concludes that dogs are more attracted to certain breeds and not others, I believe there is a plausible explanation for this.

Individual breeds have unique face and body shapes, use different styles of body language and have different ways of playing which a similar breed recognises and relates to. They simply understand the finer details of each other’s language.

The communication style makes perfect sense to them, but may not be as well understood by other breed types.

A negative or positive past experience with a particular breed may also have an impact on a dog’s perception and reaction to that breed.

When I take my Schnauzers out, they get very excited if they see other Schnauzers and immediately want to go over to say hello. They do the same with Airedale Terriers, Scotties and Maltese, but tend not to be interested or keep away from other breeds.

Have you noticed that your dog seems to naturally understand or communicate more easily with dogs of their own breed or similar type?

WHAT COLOURS DO DOGS SEE?
Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not colour blind.

A dog’s visual world is certainly not as vibrantly colourful as ours, but they do see a range of yellow, grey and blue shades and have better night and peripheral vision than we do.

Colour is interpreted and discerned by nerve cells in the eyes. The retina has two main types of cells called rods, which detect light levels and motion and cones which differentiate colour.

A human’s eyes have three types of cones which can identify combinations of red, blue, and green.

Dogs have only two types of cones that are only able to discern shades of blue, yellow and grey – this perception of colour is called dichromatic vision.

An ophthalmology professor at the University of Washington discovered that dogs could see blues and yellows but not reds and greens. This information would have been confirmed by anatomical investigation of a dog’s eye.

It would make more sense if manufacturers of dog toys would take a dog’s colour spectrum into account when producing dog toys.

Toys are usually made to visually appeal to people, not dogs.

Shades of yellow, grey or blue are far more appealing to your dog than a bright shade of red or another colour.
