It’s with a heavy heart that we must pause all orders for Sammy’s Wholesome Pet foods for the time being. The reason behind this is a shortage of high-quality duck meat, and as always, we refuse to compromise on the quality of the food we provide for your pets.

Rest assured, we are actively seeking new suppliers who meet our high standards, and once we find the right fit, we’ll be ready to take orders again.

We want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your incredible support over the years. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just a pause — we’ll be back before you know it!

Where Sammy’s started

I have two Boston Terriers, Leela and Fry, and they were both the inspiration behind Sammy’s Wholesome Pet Foods.

Leela’s Story:

When I got Leela as a puppy, she would struggle to keep her food down. I was told that it was maybe because she is eating too quickly. I tried to nip that in the bud by using all of the tricks of the trade - tennis ball in her food, feeding her smaller servings but more often. Nothing seemed to help. When Leela was 5 years old, she got worse. She started losing weight at a drastic rate. I rushed her to the vet, and they diagnosed Leela with a persistent right aortic arch, a birth defect, which was stopping the food from going into her stomach. Leela went from 8kg’s to 5.5 kgs. She was tiny. The only way to fix the Right Aortic Arch was to do open-heart surgery. We booked her in. The operation was a success, however, due to her having the condition for so long, her oesophagus was damaged and stretched. Because of this, she has to eat standing up, and can only eat soft food. We had her on a very expensive high calorie (well known and reputable) brand of dog food to help her pick up weight. She wasn't picking up weight. I then tried to cook chicken and rice for her, but it was dry and she would bring it all up. Something had to change, and quick.

I got in contact with “The Duck Father SA”, and enquired if they had any duck pet mince that I could try, having heard about the fantastic benefits of duck. Luckily for me they did! The best part about the duck pet mince is that it contains all the great nutritional parts of the duck (hearts, livers, lungs) and their ducks are all free-range! I started playing around with some recipes, and I cooked Leela duck pet mince, with a few veggies and carbohydrates, to ensure she was eating a balanced meal. She loved the food. She started picking up weight, looking healthier, and she even had more energy and got her personality back. That was when I knew I was onto something with my duck food! That's when I decided to start “Sammy’s Wholesome Foods”, so that other people with pets who struggle to gain weight could benefit from organic healthy food that is balanced, full of healthy goodness, and will help their fur family get back to their best selves in no time! It's also a delicious treat for normal dogs to add some variety to their meal times!
