10 COMMANDMENTS IN PIG PRODUCTION

1. Pigs require a lot of drinking water to aid their digestion. You must make sure it’s well supplied. In a case where ni***es are not used, Change the water of the wallow regularly and replace with clean, neat and cool water.
2. Make sure while formulating their feed, a good quality fiber is included as this is a very important part of pig feed (feed conversion rate). Nonetheless, fiber is kept low in piglets formulae.
3. Routine vaccinations (deworm them regularly)
4. Disinfect your piggery, pig pens, storerooms, etc at regular intervals to make it germ/bacteria free and clean.
5. If in any case chances occur that you have to change their feed, do so gradually so that their digestive system will be able to take it easily without any gastro—disturbance.
6. Animal record keeping (keeping records and not using them is as bad as not keeping records at all). Keep records to monitor developments in your pigs.
7. Stable environmental temperatures (The bodies of piglets are only able to properly maintain their body temperature at the normal temperature when they are about One month old or more).
8. If there should be symptoms of sickness or in-activeness among the pigs, separate the sick animals and consult your vet doctor immediately.
9. Pigs are sensitive to heat (they have no sweat glands) and they can die from heat-stress so their house must be well ventilated.
10. Maintain a Clean environment. Before feeding them, make sure you clean up their litters and their pens, get rid of all dirt in the feeders and drinkers.

What to Consider When Selecting Boars and Sows for Breeding
The following should be considered before you choose or select your boars or sows.
1. The boars and sows should have a minimum of 12 normal ni***es and teats respectively, 6 on each side.
2. They should be the healthiest and biggest in their group.
3. They should possess strong legs and be able to walk well.
4. Their parents should have excellent performance records, such as good-sized litters, good feed conversion
and excellent mothering ability.
5. They should not be in**ed. This means they should be from different sources.

Most common cereal grains and fats are quite palatable and digestible.

A piggery meant for rearing pigs on a permanent basis should be strong and durable:

- The floor of a piggery should be hard, unbreakable and rough.

- Slanted floors to easily allow water/urine or wastes flow to the drainage or gutters to keep the pains dry.

- Automatic drinking NI***ES positioned to the height of different sizes of pigs for easy access to water.

-Creeps are constructed essentially to isolate breast feeding piglets.

- Your design should enable an all-in all-out management system to be operated with complete cleaning, disinfection and drying of pens between groups. This prevents the build up of infection and reduces the exposure to viruses, bacteria and parasites.
- The roof which can be conical or flat should be sufficiently high to have enough air circulation.

- The doors should be strong and durable. Any material may be used for the door but the best material is iron.

- A feeding passage of about 3- 4 feet is convenient for moving around.

- The drainages from each room and the main drainage should be constructed with sufficient slope (slanty), more so smooth for easy cleaning.

- Clean and dry surroundings and covered septic tanks reduce the occurrence of diseases and parasites.
