Colic is the most common emergency in horses.

Several risk factors associated with stable management have been linked to colic in horses, such as recent changes in feed, housing, exercise and routine. At this time of year, the combination of reduced activity levels and turnout combined with the hot weather can significantly increase a horse’s risk of colic. So during these hot summer months we need to take extra precautions. We can minimize risk of colic by ensuring horses stay well hydrated, by always ensuring a constant supply of fresh cool water and by using salt licks to encourage increased water intake.

Even during the summer break, try to give some exercise to encourage movement, such as paddock turnout at night-time when it is coolest. Any changes to the diet should be made gradually. Keep a close eye on your horse to look for any early warning signs such as reduced feed or water intake, reduced faecal output or dry faeces, or increased time spent lying down.

We are delighted to release the UAE Olympic Showjumping team under the guidance of Chef D' Équipe, William Funnell.
