Boudheib Academy Students Advancing.
Last year's novice riders participated this morning in their first 40km endurance qualifier at the Boudheib International Endurance Village (BIEV) as part of today's events, which also includes the CEI**120km International Prestige Ride. Having only started riding lessons last year, the young students have come a very long way and now frequently compete in showjumping, dressage & tent-pegging competitions.
Today for the first time, 16 of them advanced from the 10 & 20km beginners endurance rides to take part in the open 40km qualifier. It was a pleasure to watch them caring for their horses, regularly stopping at water points along the 2 loops and taking charge at the vet inspection area. These are the UAE endurance riders of the future, so good basic horsemanship skills and welfare understanding of the horse are essential lessons that are being taught. This afternoon the next group of younger novice Boudheib Academy riders will participate in a 10km ride over 2 loops.
The Boudheib Initiative is definitely Driving the Future of Endurance at all levels!
Congratulations to Kieran Treacy, the Boudheib Academy Manager, on a great job and to the students taking part.

Shifting Sands of Time
The Boudheib Initiative (BI), now entering it's third year since creation, has gained momentum far exceeding initial expectations. When His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi first introduced the BI rules, he foresaw only changes for the UAE, but the international endurance world have embraced Sheikh Sultan's unerring efforts with open arms in order to put the 'welfare of the endurance horse' at its heart and help return the sport of endurance back to its ethical roots.

The Boudheib Initiative protocol has come a long way. Sheikh Sultan & his BI Committee have invested much time in an effort to understand the needs of different terrains both home and away, whilst considering rider ability and age and fitness of participating horses. The BECA (Boudheib Endurance Challenge Award) rules, implemented to reward good horsemanship and sportsmanship, are now cast in stone with less emphasis on speed reduction, as this has naturally occurred thanks to the stringent rule of 56bpm heart rate (variable in some international locations) with a presentation time of 10 minutes. In most well thought out trails in the majority of environments, the 20km per hour rule is difficult to surpass, thus keeping competition competitive whilst ensuring horse wellbeing.

Last month at Boudheib's International Endurance Village's (BIEV) first endurance rides of the UAE 2017/18 season, a new awareness came into force with a notable shift in perception from local trainers, including some of the top UAE endurance stables, who are impressed to see the benefits from training their horses using Boudheib's natural forestry tracks, allowing them to gain a greater understanding of the fitness & potential of their horses using the BECA protocol which in turn aids their training for different terrains at both local and international competitions. Riders are enjoying the open spaces with no cars or trainers to be seen, allowing them to efficiently partner & enjoy their horses whilst appreciating nature's desert at its most glorious. We are also delighted to note in the last 2 years, a rise in the standards of riding and the care and quality of horses competing.
This all adds up to one thing: Boudheib Initiative is making its mark and it's here to stay!

Unique to Boudheib's International Endurance Village (BIEV), Abu Dhabi
• Natural tracks have been introduced, slowing the speed whilst keeping rides competitive and so much more enjoyable for both horse & rider.
• No cars or trainers are allowed on the natural tracks, allowing the riders to partner their horses in the manner for which endurance is intended.
• Cameras have been placed at the Vet inspection areas to ensure no lame horses are passed, illiminating possible pressure put on vets by insistent riders & trainers to pass their horses and also preventing vets from favoring horses if they are not fit to continue. (The camera film is kept for one month in case of any later recourse).
• Cameras mounted in the rest areas to discourage untoward treatments being given to horses in quiet corners.
• There have been no leg fractures recorded in the last 2 years.
• The clinic is always virtually empty during BIEV rides, and those who enter are quickly treated and sent home the same day fully recovered.
• 10km & 20km rides dedicated to young riders entering the world of endurance - ensuring, through education, the future wellbeing of the horse.

Boudheib Initiative - Iran's First Steps:-

As the safety and health of the horse is of paramount importance for the Iran Asil Association, they requested to try the BI protocol and organized their first 20km Boudheib ride in Iran last weekend. The number of the horses were not so big, but after the ride many showed interest in taking part in the next BI event.
Event organiser, Shirin Sarlatash commented, 'Speed is very important but it should not be achieved at the expense of the horses' wellbeing, something that we have witnessed for a long time in Iran's endurance rides.
Using the BI points system we saw a great improvement in horses' performance, as riders were aware of the health of the horse as paramount. The result of the first ride is very satisfactory and we have decided to continue to organize Boudheib Initiative endurance rides in other provinces for the future.
Iran Asil Association welcomes the idea of the Boudheib Initiative and would like to support this system in Iran as it is the best way to control the riders not to push their horses to their last breath. We wish success for the Boudheib Committee and we will continue to organize more rides in Iran.'

results:-
1st place : Reza Maki on Kiarash - Kiarash is a straight Iranian chestnut stallion
2nd place: Shirin Salartash on Golandam
3rd place : Reza Goudarzi on Djebel

plus more photos of yet another good Boudheib Initiative (BI) day! Only 5 horses were eliminated from the BECA for exceeding the BI speed of 20km per hour & even they did not pass 22km proving that the natural tracks slow the speed as intended, making the sport competitive but in the best sense for all involved - great result!!!
