Has this ever happened to you? Your dog is limping and crying at home but as soon as you get to the vets seems completely fine?

A dog that limps at home but walks normally at the vet isn’t being dramatic, they’re following hardwired survival behaviour.

Dogs have evolved to hide pain when they feel exposed or uncertain. New environments trigger adrenaline and heighten awareness, which naturally suppresses mild to moderate discomfort. That’s why a painful leg at home can suddenly look “fine” under the excitement or stress of a clinic visit.

If you see limping, crying, or difficulty standing at home, it still matters. Videos and descriptions from home help us understand the real picture.

🔍 Understanding Pet Surgery: What Owners Should Know — Before, During & After
Tea & Tails Podcast with Dr. Rachelle

Pet surgery can feel overwhelming for owners, from the moment a procedure is recommended to the days spent monitoring healing at home. In our latest Tea & Tails episode, Dr. Rachelle breaks down the entire process in a clear, practical way that helps owners feel informed, prepared, and confident.

In this episode, we cover:
• Pre-surgery preparation — blood tests, safety checks, and what vets look for before anesthesia
• Inside the operating room — who’s involved, how anesthesia is monitored, and how modern techniques reduce risk
• Post-surgery care — what normal healing looks like, the red flags to watch for, and how to support recovery at home
• Owner FAQs — the fears, misunderstandings, and common myths we hear every day

Our goal is simple: to make the surgical journey less intimidating and help pet owners understand how much planning, expertise, and teamwork go into keeping their pets safe.

1. Viral & Bacterial Infections
These are the most frequent causes of red, watery, or sticky eyes. Kittens and young cats are especially prone because their immune systems are still developing, and many come from multi-cat environments where viruses like herpesvirus spread easily. Untreated infections can scar the cornea or become chronic.

2. Uveitis
Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye and can be extremely painful. It’s linked to trauma, infections, immune disorders, or systemic diseases. Middle-aged and older cats are more commonly affected, as well as cats with FIV/FeLV. Signs can be subtle: squinting, cloudiness, or changes in iris colour. Without treatment, it can lead to glaucoma or vision loss.

3. Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction
A blocked tear duct stops tears from draining normally, leading to constant tearing or discharge. Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic Shorthairs are much more likely to develop this due to their facial structure. Many owners mistake the tearing for “allergies,” but it often requires flushing or medical management.

Why this matters:
Eye problems in cats progress quickly. If you notice redness, tearing, squinting, or any change in appearance, early veterinary care protects comfort and long-term vision.

Every visit to the vet, no matter the reason, starts with a full consult for one simple reason: your pet won’t tell you when something’s wrong. 🐾

Pets hide pain, discomfort, and early illness incredibly well. A consult lets your vet pick up quiet clues you can’t see at home: changes in breathing, heart rhythm, gum colour, skin and coat condition, eye pressure, hydration, posture, and subtle behaviour shifts that often reveal issues long before symptoms appear.

Even when you come in for something routine, the consult is the most important part of the visit. It’s how we catch early kidney disease, heart problems, infections, allergies, arthritis, hormonal changes and more, often months before they become serious.

A few minutes of hands-on examination can completely change the course of your pet’s health.

That’s why the consult is never “just a check.” It is the foundation of good veterinary care and the most powerful tool we have to keep your pet healthy for years to come.

Certain dog breeds are more prone to developing cancer due to their genetics and breed-related tendencies.

At our oncology department, we often see cases in:
🐾 Golden Retrievers – lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma
🐾 Boxers – mast cell tumors
🐾 Rottweilers – bone and soft tissue cancers
🐾 Labrador Retrievers – lymphoma and mast cell tumor
🐾 French Bulldog - mast cell tumor

🐈Additionally light haired cats are especially prone to sun induced skin cancer

Knowing your breed’s risks helps with early detection. Regular check-ups, blood tests, and monitoring any new lumps or changes are key to catching problems early.

This technique doesn’t just make surgery smaller, it makes it smarter.

Through tiny keyhole incisions, our surgeons insert a camera that lets us explore the entire abdominal cavity with incredible clarity. That means we can check for hidden issues, confirm organ health, and perform the procedure with pinpoint precision, all with far less pain and trauma.

Your pet recovers faster, needs less medication, and goes home the same day.

Most pet parents only visit the vet when something looks wrong, but for senior pets, that can be dangerously late.

In this Tea & Tails episode, Dr. Ramona explains why yearly check-ups are one of the most important things you can do for an aging pet. Conditions like kidney disease often develop silently, and by the time you notice symptoms like loss of appetite, weight changes, or increased thirst, the kidneys may already be 70–80% damaged.

Regular blood and urine tests help catch these issues early, before they become life-threatening. The goal isn’t just to treat disease, but to preserve quality of life and give your senior pet more comfortable, healthy years.

🎙️ Tea & Tails with Dr. Ramona, because growing old is natural, but suffering isn’t.
