THE OTHER END OF THE LEASH I AM HOLDING

Every person in this world, who are working long years with and around animals, they will tell you how sensitive our animal world is. They feel much more than we can even think about.

My experience is limited around dogs and I have felt so many times that our dogs show us the real mirror which we need to look at with grave seriousness.

We work with rescue organizations and we have fostered dogs for years now. The dogs who come to us after getting rescued from streets, farms or abusive owners or being abandoned….. they all come with baggages. Baggage of - lack of self confidence, sadness, fear , lack of trust , reactive personality…… etc etc.
We work with potential adopters and trainers …. And the moment the leash changes the hands the dog changes. It may sound dramatic. But this is the truth .
The dogs sense our strength and weakness very clearly. They want assurance that the leash holder is capable enough in taking care of them and to be in charge of handling any situation.
Confidence and calmness are the two key characteristics - that comforts the dogs.

I will tell you couple of stories here.

One of my friend, whose Labrador used to come to us since he was a puppy. Very good , happy, confident dog with almost zero problem.
During covid time the family had to go through different challenges like job loss etc. Like many other unfortunate families, this particular family also couldn’t handle Covid time well and the couple started fighting among themselves and over time they decided to get separated. We have seen the dog ‘s character getting changed infront of our own eyes.
The calm confident happy dog - became depressed, started to refuse his daily walk even - just because he lost all confidence on himself and on his family.

Another story-
We received a dog from a rescue organization , who was almost a red-zone dog. Extremely reactive and high energy. We were fostering the dog. But the rescue organization was working with him with a dog trainer. Months went by to find the right person who can be the owner of the dog. But when that right person started training with him - as soon the leash went to the right hand , the dog started changing like a magic. That dog is now the best family dog. Lives with his two human baby siblings. Zero reactivity around human or other dogs.

I have seen several times - when we adopt a dog to fill up any void in us - marriage separation, breaking up relationships, empty-nests …or anything, if we are not careful about how calmly and maturely we are dealing with our challenges- we unknowingly put lots of emotional pressure on our pets . Our expectations on our pets go so high- which is not healthy for them at all, neither for us. As a result they start reacting in different ways.

I can go on with hundreds of stories. We the dog parents should be doing an introspection if we suddenly find any attitude change in our dogs. As well as checking the dog’s health, we should look into ourselves also to find - if anything unusual is going on there.

Dogs are angels in our life , the best guide we can have. Though we are holding the leash , but they are the one who are holding the mirror where we can see our real reflection.

Common Myths About Dog Boarding Debunked

Myth no 1.
Dogs feel abandoned when we leave them in dog boarding .

FACT -
Dogs are more adoptable than we give them credit for. Ideally when the parents start bringing the dog to the dog boarding on a regular basis , then the routine to coming to the place and then going back home - this becomes a pattern. And they start enjoying the friends, exposure and challenges there. Once the dog is comfortable with the handlers there and the whole environment- then it doesn’t matter if the boarding is for one day or for weeks or for months

Myth no 2.
Dog will forget the owner .

FACT -
In our experience of 9 yrs into this service, even after staying with us for years ( the longest stay until now is 2.5 years ) no dog has ever forgotten the family.
Dogs are the most loyal loving creatures we can imagine of.

Myth no 3.
My dog will miss me , will be sad and traumatized

FACT -
If I do a proper research before deciding on which doggy daycare/ dog boarding my dog will best fit in and if I make it a routine to bring my dog there on regular basis…. Then neither my dog will be sad or miss me or be traumatized.
Dogs live in ‘ Present’ they don’t unnecessarily stress about future. So once my dog is comfortable in her boarding atmosphere- she actually enjoys the activities and action in life there.

Myth no 4.
My dog’s behavior will change after the long boarding

FACT
Dogs are very routined and disciplined animals. In the dog boarding place , they follow the place’s rules and regulations. And when he will come back home - he will fall back into his usual daily routine.
After picking up my dog from the dog boarding I should-,
1. Give him enough time to rest and sleep
2. ⁠will go slow on food , will not change the food and will not change his feeding routine ( which he was following during his boarding time ) immediately after coming back home. This helps them to settle faster
3. ⁠will not provide treats for 2-3 days after coming back home. This may upset the tummy
4. ⁠will start following my usual home routine of daily walks and feeding slowly- going back 100% to it gradually in 3 to 4 days time.

Daycare Dog story

Its more than 8 years now my life mostly evolves and revolves around dog world in Dubai. Kids are grown ups. Husband busy with his job. But I am blessed- I don’t have even a moment to be bored.

Everyday morning I get up feeling happy - Aha , now its my time to go to my nursery. Whoever has the experience of spending time around animal world, everyone will agree with me - spending time with animals are like doing meditation. You live at the moment, there is no scope to be stressed or feeling sad or to get worried about unknown unnecessary fear of life.

Every day at Romi’s Home , we witness different stories. Stories of dogs , stories of their families. And unknowingly we become a part of their happiness and sorrow.

Today I will tell you a story of two beautiful dogs and an amazing lady and a fantastic man.

It was just after covid. World was getting opening up. I was in our reception as usual. One of our mom called ( Lets call her Lady -M ) . She was literally sobbing. She said - ‘ Romi I was driving through Al Khail Road. And saw one SUV stopped by the side of the road. One guy came out , took a dog out of the car and drove away straight. The poor dog started chasing the car. I couldn’t stop myself. But stopped my car and picked up the dog. Now I don’t know what to do. ‘
I was like - ‘ seriously people? We have stopped even fearing karma? ‘

Me and Lady M had a long conversation. I couldn’t take the dog in our Nursery without having him fully health checked and immunity checked. Neither Lady M could take him home - because her dog obviously her priority. Without the health checkup or immunity test she couldn’t expose her own dog to this new guy.

After discussion the logical solution came out - Lady M ‘s dog would come to us for couple of days boarding. And she would in- between do all kind of health check for the dog - let’s call the dog ‘ Happy ‘

3-4 days went by. We were constantly in touch with each other. ‘Happy ‘ was a disaster at Lady M’s house. He p*ed every where, pooped everywhere, barked - cried non-stop , obviously the neighbors complained. What else could go wrong. Poor dog was totally in shock.

Days were passing very slowly,Nothing was improving. And because of Happy’s disastrous attitude M couldn’t bring back her own dog home. I received a call one day around 11pm from Lady M. She said - ‘ Romi me and my husband ( Lets name him Mr P ) constantly fighting over this. Security came and complained again. Now P is extremely angry with me for bringing Happy home. I don’t know what to do. But I am not giving up on this dog. ‘

Next day . Another call from Lady M - ‘ Romi. Plz without my permission do not handover my dog to P. I adopted my dog before we got married. Now I am not sure we will continue this marriage or not . So its my instruction- if P comes , do not hand him over my dog ‘ .

Another 2-3 days passed by. Didn’t hear back from Lady M. I was not sure about should I disturb her or not. Another couple of days and I couldn’t control myself and Called M. I asked her - All ok ?

M started sobbing- ‘ Romi I am so sorry, I should have called you. But last couple of days were so emotional for us , I couldn’t pay attention to anything else. Romi - Happy , I don’t know how but he did a magic. He and P have become inseparable. Last time when I called you after me and P fought over Happy , P was sleeping on the couch in the drawing room. And Happy somehow around midnight opened his crate and cuddled with P. Thats the starting. I am yet to believe my luck Romi. But everything seems to be changing for better.’

Long story short- M & P have two dogs now. Their older dog and his best friend Happy. They worked together with a trainer. Who was a huge help. They have a baby girl now . Baby C. Baby C is head over heels in love with her two elder doggy brothers.

I am not painting a ‘ happily ever after story here ‘ . I am sure life will come with its own share of challenges to this lovely family as it does to all of us. But I have no doubt that they will deal with all those challenges together.

Today 25th June 2024. I was sitting in our reception as usual. Lady M , Mr P came with their two wonderful dogs and beautiful baby girl. Dogs will be staying next 6 weeks with us for their summer staycation.

My heart is still full. Thought of sharing the happiness with you all. Looking at this lovely family- it gives me such hope . Life is great and lets cheer to that.

An extra simple step - which can make a huge difference while you are traveling and your furry family member will be having his staycation in the Dog Boarding/ Dog kennel/ Doggy Daycare

It was around 2021 Summer- suddenly Dubai dog parents started having a nightmare. News started spreading in social media that there is a nasty Parvo outbreak in Dubai dog community.
We all dog parents know - “ Parvo “ is a word we never want to hear. Its a nasty infection which has an extremely high mortality rate. In this infection the inner lining of the digestive system gets destroyed. Symptoms are -
extreme lethargy,
vomiting,
diarrhea with blood,
The dog stops eating
Extreme dehydration

We all started getting news that not only pups but even fully vaccinated adult dogs were getting infected.

Naturally people started panicking. We went to multiple vets to check- whats actually was happening around and how can we make sure the safety of all our dogs.

The solution came out was - the immunity test. Its a simple blood test. Which shows the immunity in a dog against Parvo , Distemper and Hepatitis.
When we dug dipper into the matter we found out - Parvo virus can stay alive on a dog’s fur for more than 2 weeks without effecting the dog if the dog’s immunity is good. And can easily infect another dog who came in touch with this guy if that dog doesn’t have a healthy immunity.

We started communicating with all our parents that all our dogs- they were coming for daycare or boarding- must have a vacci-check ( means the immunity check) . We made it compulsory for all our dogs that they needed to have the vacci-check report with them along with their yearly vaccinations.

To make things more clear here -

A dog first gets two sets of puppy vaccines

Then they receive their final adult vaccine of DHPpl and Rabies.

By 4 to 5 months of age they should complete all the stages of vaccinations.
Then as per Dubai Municipality law every year they need to repeat these vaccinations.

Until this parvo outbreak started we all were pretty happy with our dog’s yearly vaccinations. Never had any issues.
But once we started doing the immunity test - with great astonishment we found for some reason almost 30% of dogs were coming out with insufficient immunity. Which was really concerning.

What is the solution is a dog has insufficient immunity?
So the dogs whose immunity was low - they had to go through a booster shot of DHPpl and after 21 days of the booster- another vacci/ check to see if the immunity came up to sufficient level.
And each time we found- after booster shot , all the dog’s immunity came strong.

This is the background why we still are keeping up the extra security wall of the Vacci-check. All dogs first coming to us - they need to go through this simple blood test at any vet.

We must understand- these infections like Parvo / Distemper/ Hepatitis…… these are not isolated in any particular place. If I think- my dog doesn’t go to doggy daycare or dog boarding or dog park. So he/ she is safe. That not true at all - my dog will go for his regular walks. These viruses are everywhere. We can carry these viruses on our shoes , bag , clothes or hands. So basically we can not isolate our dogs. Its literally impossible. What we can do is - making it super sure that our dogs have sufficient immunity to deal with these viruses.

Hence -

Our sincere request to all the dog parents out there - if you are reading this blog. Whichever boarding or kennel you have chosen for your pup - we are sure you have done a good background check. Even if they don’t require this extra test report from you - still for making everything 100% safe -
Plz contact your vet for an immunity test ( which is called Vacci-check) against- Parvo , Distemper , Hepatitis .
If the test result by chance comes insufficient- the vet will advise you to go for a booster shot. Request the vet to use a different brand for the booster than the brand used for your dog’s yearly vaccinations. This is very effective in our experience to boost the immunity.
After the booster shot - wait for 3 weeks minimum and go for another vacci-check to measure the immunity.
Now your dog is fully ready for the summer camp 🏕️ and you are ready for an awesome vacation.

Not only Romis Home Pets Nursery, there are many other dog boarding/ dog kennels in Dubai who have also still kept it mandatory - having this test result as their requirement along with the yearly vaccinations
This simple procedure has helped us having smooth infection free daycare and boarding even when there were parvo or distemper outbreak in Dubai and around. With all our parents co-operation we never had to go through the nightmare of any of our dog having these nasty infections and loosing him/ her in the process .

So please everyone- lets take this extra tiny effort and lets make our dog community super safe for all our dogs.

IN OUR SCHOOL WHEN WE HAVE SUPER HAPPY / EXTREMELY FRIENDLY DOG WITH STILL DEVELOPING SOCIAL SKILL- WHY WE ARE EXTRA CAREFUL WITH THEM.

Its a pretty common scenario in Dubai when we have dog parents coming to us saying- He or she is extremely friendly.
But when we go through the assessment process, we find though the dog is friendly. But the social skill is not well developed. And for these dogs - chances of getting bitten by other dogs are pretty high.

Let me explain the difference between a friendly dog and a dog who has good social skills.

Dogs with social skills know-,

1. How to approach a new dog or a pack. They always assess first before approaching a new dog or pack- giving enough time to make the other party understand that he/ she doesn’t mean any threat.

2. They respect other dogs space. If a dog for any reason doesn’t want to be disturbed- they will keep the distance from him.
If a dog is vulnerable for any reason- can’t see / or pregnant/ or physically challenged…. These dogs will never approach her suddenly

3. If a dog is nervous, scared for whatever reason-,these dogs will keep a distance and never approach them unannounced . Approaching these nervous dogs many times causes fear bites.

On the other hand - when we have friendly happy dogs - we are extremely careful with them to start with in our boarding/ daycare. They dont know how to respect other dogs boundaries and space. And the possibility of these dogs getting bitten is pretty high.

This is a very important reason we need to send our dogs to dog school. When they go to school- they stay away from their parents/ family, which is totally a different equation in a dog’s life. In a neutral ground like dog boarding/ dog daycare the pack teaches them what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in a pack. How to be respectful towards other dogs and how to respect other dog’s boundaries. We human can never teach them these skills.

More they develop their social skills, more they become confident. Chances of getting bitten, getting into fights, scare biting/ snapping….. you will not see in a socially matured dog.
When dogs are born in nature- they grow up in a pack structure and older dogs teach the pups these skills in natural process. But for domestic dogs - they are living with us and we want them to behave the way we need them to behave in our societal structure. In this situation developing their social skill is extremely important.

Taking our dogs to regular walks - which is the most important activity of the day to develop the relationship / bonding with our dogs.

Sending them to dog school- which stimulates their body & mind so well , we end up having a very well behaved dog. Because relaxed dogs are the best behaved dogs. The training even works best on relaxed mind.

Whenever we talk about this - it may sound like we are promoting dog school concept to promote our dog boarding service. But its more than 8 years now we are into this. We have faith and trust from our parents who will understand- we want to develop a community where we dog parents will be more aware, we will have more well behaved happy dogs . Everything for us - is not only about Romis Home Pets Nursery . But it’s about developing a healthy dog community with right understanding about our dog’s need , attitude, mental & physical health.

Love is blind

WHEN MOZZIE BROKE HIS FRONT LEG IN OUR DOG- BOARDING

Mozzie is a lovely poodle boy we have. He and his sister come pretty often to our daycare and boarding both.

That particular morning everything was usual. Except Mozzie decided to jump from our tiny group uncle Nigel’s lap and landed on the floor wrongly on his front left paw.
All his friends were going out for the morning playtime. Nigel took Mozzie on his lap. And excited Mozzie jumped.
He started limping immediately holding his left paw up.

We informed his mom . She obviously was very worried. We told her - we were taking Mozzie for xray and depending on the result , we together can decide the future action.
Xray showed broken bone. Mozzie’s mom was with us at the vet . And after detailed discussion and some good homework she decided on the surgeon she wanted Mozzie to be operated by.
We took Mozzie to that particular vet . The operation was done by that evening. Operation went very well. The vet updated us during the night also how Mozzie was doing.

Next day we picked up Mozzie from the vet. He was very fine. He actually was trying to walk normally.. But Mozzie was advised to take rest for 3 weeks. So he had to be in his crate most of the time except his p*e / poo break which is 5 minutes each time outside his crate.
The vet said after 3 weeks rest - Mazzie’s leg will heal in such way that he will be as good as like it never happened.

The reasons I wanted to share this story-

1. Unfortunately accidents can happen. Can happen with us at dog boarding/ dog daycare, can happen when the dogs are at home with nanny or parents or with petsitter . Even after utmost caution- natural rule - unpredictable things will happen.

2. Big applause to Mozzie’s mom. She was with us from the very beginning co-operating at every step. Discussing everything very logically. She was very worried, sad even crying. But when I was talking to her - she said ‘ Romi I know things happen. Even so many times they jump from my lap. No point of thinking why or how. But right now most important is we need to take care our Mozzie.

3. Both Vets -
A. Dreamers Veterinary Clinic- where we did the Xray and preliminary check
B. Vet Fur Pets - when Dr Nikolay did the surgery.
Both were extremely transparent and professional in explaining us all the steps and very assuring.

4. This story is an example how when three parties-
We dog boarding/ dog care
The parents
The vet
All work together logically ,professionally and with transparent attitude any issues can be solved.

While running a dog boarding, if I promise my parents- nothing will happen while your furry member is with us. That will be very much an unrealistic promise. But what I promise to our parents- if something unusual happens - you will be informed immediately with all details. If you are traveling We will be doing exactly what you would do if you were here. We will be with you at every step if you are here. We are extremely transparent in communicating with our parents in every matter. This service runs on mutual trust.

As a responsible dog mom while choosing a dog boarding- dog daycare for my dog , I should check-

1. The dog school I am choosing for my pup , how often they have accidents/ incidents , sickness in the facility . If I find the number is pretty high , incidents are happening pretty often - thats a red flag for me. This means the team is not experienced and the hygiene of the place is questionable.

2. The dog school has 24/7 reputable vet support or not.

3. How transparent and honest the dog boarding is while communicating with the parents.

4. I must be very clear about the accountability of my dog’s school. But at the same time my co- operation with the team is extremely important if something goes wrong.

Special note -

Mozzie is back to his mom. Doing very well. Still resting. We are in touch with his mom every day. We are so so sorry Mazzie that it happened. But you are such a strong good boy- in no time you will be running with your friends here in school . We are so proud of you.

Story of a girl and her dog

It was a rainy night in December 1994.
Everyone was almost getting ready for dinner. Ma was just waiting for dad to come back from wherever he went. Doorbell rang, and dad came in half drenched in rainwater. He called the girl of the house his daughter-“ Khuku someone is here for you”
A tiny black ball of fur. He put on the ground. The far ball started walking with four legs.

It was not anything new in this house. Khuku grew up with dogs always. She was 19 then. Their last dog Albert crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 14 some months back.
But still something changed that particular moment . The 19 year old girl became a mom instantly . All their dogs she grew up with, they were her dad’s dogs, her kind of siblings, but this guy looked up at her -
Brown eyes
Steady stare
Tilted head
He silently asked “ mom “ ?
Rocky was only a month and a half old on that day. His mom died after giving birth four pups. Three of them died. Rocky was the only one who survived.

Khuku struggled a little bit in managing her university classes, Rocky’s p*e/ poo training, multiple time feeding. But she managed.

Rocky started growing very fast - as they all do . In no time he was a massive 42 kg mass , who had no idea of his own size . His whole world was Khuku .
He would get up with Khuku in the morning.
First two dog biscuits from her hand. He would only eat if Khuku would feed him.
He would wait by the window until she would come back from college every day. Every time her car would enter the lane of her house - the loud barking of Rocky was the first and only thing she would hear .
Both of them - Khuku & Rocky every day used to wait for the time of the day when they would play with the torn ball. He would run away with the ball and she would chase.
He would sleep by her side- every night, sharing the pillow.

Khuku didn’t have any siblings. She and her best companion Tintin and Asterix comics . When Rocky joined- they became partner in crime . Literally inseparable.

Time flew by on its own rhythm.

Rocky was two years old a vibrant dog. Khuku’s family went for a vacation for 10 days . Their house help was there taking care of Rocky. When they came back, they found Rocky with badly congested lungs ,cough , high temperature.

Reason ?

The house help by mistake, locked him in the balcony one night and that particular night it rained heavily .

The vet, Rocky, Khuku and the family as a whole started a fight . Medication was not that much advanced all those years back. Rocky stopped eating completely.. khuku’s mom would paste chicken, rice, veggies, and Khuku would put spoon by spoon in Rocky’s mouth and would keep the mouth closed until he swallowed it. It used to take hours just to feed a small bowl and it was a daily struggle for Rocky . Khuku was ready to do anything to get her boy back on his 4 paws. The fight went for months. None of them were ready to give up on the loosing battle.
Then one morning Rocky’s week heart give up. The whole world became black for the 21 year old girl.. Her partner in crime was gone. For some reason she totally forgot how her life was before Rocky came

That day she promised herself- I will never have a dog in my life. I cannot go through this sadness again . Ever

Time flew by in its own pace. Khuku got married , she had two daughters. She came to Dubai with her family in 2008 . Life was normal with its usual challenges.

2013 December- Khuku Went to meet a friend in Abu Dhabi. She parked her car near friend’s house. Dogs were barking from the next villa. Out of curiosity, she p*eped through the metal fence.

There stood a fur ball on four legs-
Brown eyes
Steady stare
Tilted head
Didn’t bark , didn’t move , kept on staring into Khuku’s eyes

A wall broke in Khuku’s heart.

Khuku’s Family didn’t need much convincing. For some reason they were already on board. The Villa Owner , the Pups then dad for valid reason was not ready, of course. But Khuku made it the mission of her life to convince the gentleman.

Four months old Chloe one fine December evening without any protest or hesitation followed Khuku in her car . Then from the car to her home.

The same brown eyes
Same expression
Same steady stare
Same tilted head
What else same ?? Chloe refused food. Khuku thought it must be stress . New place , new people. But after 3rd day without food - when she picked up the food on her palm , Chloe finished it.
10 years passed like a dream.Chloe is still hand fed .

Khuku knows most probably everything is her imagination .
Most probably its just crazy coincidence.
She doesn’t need anyone to believe anything. Let it be her own personal craziness. But to Khuku - her Rocky boy came back after 19 years.

Now a days Khuku runs a kennel in Dubai with two branches and a team of her 36 boys. The birth of her dog boarding/ doggy daycare- whichever name you want to give , gradually shaped up only because of Chloe’s extreme separation anxiety, The concept of crate free stay - it all shaped up organically. There was never a ‘ business plan’. But that is a story for another day. Chloe came in Khuku’s life with a purpose. She is the reason behind everything that took form gradually in last 10 years - What you know today as “ Romi’s Home Pet Nursery’.. its an effort by a girl and her dog and her 36 amazing boys to keep the dogs stress free , happy , healthy, confident.

My dad used to call me Khuku. No one calls me by this name anymore. He left us in 2015. I wish he was with me now to see - his ‘ Khuku ‘ is surrounded by dogs every day. He tried all those long years to change my mind on not having another dog after Rocky. He believed very strongly kids grew up much responsible and empathetic and emotionally balanced when they grew around dogs. He was sad his granddaughters were missing the chance.

Romis Home Pet Nursery- dog kennel, dog boarding, doggy daycare or pet hotel , whichever name we can attach, but to me personally its an opportunity gifted by some higher entity. Its an effort by a girl and her dog and can not imagine life in any other way.

I dont know why today I felt sharing this extremely personal story with my doggy - parents. I wont blame you , after reading this if you feel - Romi is ‘ crazy ‘. But I can assure you one thing, because I have my craziness , I and my team exactly know how you feel when you hand over your dog to us. When you trust us with your precious ones. And I promise- me and my team will always try every way possible to keep your trust high up. We will do everything to keep them safe , happy and will give them the interesting life they deserve. Thats the only way I can thank my universe.
2024 now. Kids are grown ups. Mom is back home. My husband is very much here helping me whenever I need him. But he has his extremely demanding own full time job.
