Today's session with Suki.
Suki hasn't had a great life prior to adoption which caused her to have quite a few issues related to fear.
Work has started to build up this girl's confidence. So what are we doing?
The video is very short because i need to respect the privacy rights of the people that were around us. But here is what we did:
We went out to a busy area but not too busy and loud to freak her out completely, to succeed we need to start from low level triggers.
To help Suki we used counter conditioning and desensitization. In simple words we look to change an unpleasant emotional response to a trigger into a pleasant one. So for example, if a dog is afraid of men specifically, then every time the dog is in the presence of a man, and does not present any fear signals, he will receive a special and most awesome treat. And this is exactly what you see in this short video, Suki's positive response didn't happen right away, she first tried to get away from them, so we did, we moved away she sniffed around and we went back to try again. To keep her from being fixated on the 4 men that were having a good loud chat and laughing we concentrated on a simple "sit" command which she knows well, sit - reward - sit - reward, She soon was too busy to remember to look at them, then we moved a little closer and i asked her to sit next to me, she did, got rewarded then i got up and asked her to stay. She looked at the men that at that point were only about a meter away from her, laid down and decided to try catch a fly instead, WIN!!
Now, this doesn't mean that tomorrow she will run up to strange men to great them, but with the next few sessions she will very quickly understand that strange men, kids on bikes, etc aren't a scary bad thing at all and instead amazing things happen when she is around them.
Way to go Suki. You rock girl!!
Penny enjoying a yummy bone.
She is doing absolutely fantatsic. Gaining weight nicely, almost toilet trained fully, sleeps in the crate through the night and her eyes seem to have that special spark now. Love you baby girl. Keep going strong
Max!! How did you get up? Get down...oh right you goofy dog, you don't know how to get down, so you are just going to bark until I help you down. Never a dull day in this house.
