SUZETTA HAMILTON CLAIMS ANTIGUA'S GOT TALENT CROWN

A young health worker from Jennings with a lifelong passion for music swept to victory on Saturday night to claim the 2024 Antigua’s Got Talent crown.

Resplendent in a shimmering silver gown and radiating poise, Suzetta Hamilton’s soaring vocal chords took Aretha Franklin’s 1967 classic ‘Natural Woman’ to new heights.

A crowd favourite from the outset, the announcement of Hamilton’s win prompted thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the hundreds of local residents who turned out for the event.

It was the third edition of the popular contest, organised by the PAAWS animal charity as its hallmark biannual fundraiser.

Throngs of attendees packed out Lucky Eddi’s in English Harbour to watch 26 performers – who included singers, dancers, rappers and a comedian – take to the stage.

Hamilton walked away with a 50-inch smart TV, courtesy of headline sponsor Townhouse Megastore, who presented her with her prize, alongside MP for the area Chet Greene.

Dancer Keithroy Merchant, from Skerritts Pasture, moonwalked his way into second place with a Michael Jackson medley. His dexterous footwork earned him an overnight stay at the luxurious Gunpowder Suites.

Dion Pile – under the stage name Kritiqz – took third place with an original song entitled ‘Streets’. Pile, from DeSouza Road, won day passes to the Carlisle Bay resort.

The panel of celebrity judges comprised soca star Claudette Peters, social media influencer and radio show host Kenny D, reigning Miss Antigua Desrie Markham, and Director of Culture Khan Cordice. They awarded points for creativity, talent, stage presence, audience response and overall performance.

Hamilton – who scored 166 points out of a possible 200 – said she was “beyond ecstatic” to win. The law student, who currently works for the Ministry of Health’s midwifery programme, said she plans to continue exploring her passion for music.

“The atmosphere at the show was electric. I was blown away by the rich talents we have here in Antigua; it reminded me of the power of music and community,” she said.

“Thank you to everyone who supported me on my journey; all the encouragement and belief in me made all the difference. I’m truly grateful for this amazing experience and all the love that was shown.”

Keen animal lover Hamilton said it was important to her to support PAAWS.

“Every animal deserves love, compassion and a safe home just like any other being. They are not mere possessions, they have emotions and lives that deserve our respect,” she continued.

“If you are thinking of welcoming a pet into your life, please be mindful of their needs. If you can’t offer them the time, attention or love they require, think twice before putting them in vulnerable situations.

“It is essential to support initiatives like PAAWS Antigua to safeguard the welfare of animals in our community. Together we can build a more compassionate society and make a meaningful impact in the lives of countless animals with PAAWS,” she added.

Once again, the contest was hosted by the animated Ibis the Livest, while DJ Purist spun the tunes for contestants. Antigua’s Got Talent 2022 winner, singer Stephen Gore, opened the show with a stirring rendition of Maroon 5’s ‘Memories’. Popular local band The Strays continued the party with a live gig after the competition drew to a close.

“We were absolutely speechless by the talent on display. It takes a lot of courage to get up there and perform and this year’s contestants really impressed us. We think Suzetta has a bright future ahead, wherever life takes her,” said PAAWS PRO Gemma Handy.

The event raised more than EC$50,000 for the charity’s Parham-based rescue shelter.

“This record amount was made possible by the generous support of our VIP sponsors whose donations accounted for more than 50 percent. The remainder came from entrance fees, raffle ticket sales and individual donations for which we are incredibly grateful,” Handy explained.

“Every single person donated their time, services and energy to this event, which meant every single possible cent now goes directly to the shelter, and improving the lives of dogs and cats in need.

“Special thanks go to Stage Manager Michelle Bates who supported the contestants and ensured the show ran seamlessly, and our team of ardent volunteers, in particular Laura Barber for her enormous efforts gathering prizes and selling raffle tickets.”

Donation-dependent PAAWS has rehomed more than 4,000 animals over the last three decades.

“That’s 4,000 animals that got a second chance at life thanks to PAAWS and the generosity of those who keep us going,” Handy added.

“I’d also like to thank everyone out there who plays a part, whether it’s feeding a stray dog or taking an injured animal to the vet, for making the lives of local dogs and cats a little easier. To each one you help, it means the world.”
